CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter concentrates on the discussion of the research methods and procedures adhered to by
the researchers in order to answer the specific problems posed for investigation. Specifically, the
researcher method, participants, designs and instruments, Data gathering procedures, data analysis
and ethical standards.

RESEARCH DESIGN

To fulfill the objectives of the research, A Phenomenology method was used. Qualitative
research involves collecting and analyzing non-numerical data (e.g., text, video, or audio) to
understand concepts, opinions or experiences. A Phenomenological research design is a study
that attempts to understand people's perceptions, perspectives, experiences and understanding of
a particular phenomenon. Creswell (1998), points that the best criteria to determine the use of
phenomenology is when the research problem requires a profound understanding of human
experience common to a group of people. It can be used to gather in-depth insights into a
problem or generate new ideas for research. This design was chosen because it is well suited to
answer the research questions.

PARTICIPANTS

The participants in this study were Grade 12 students in Quezon City, who working while
studying in a large population so the researchers decide to select only 15 to 20 students. They are
16 to 20 years old and attending their classes continuously while working. Researchers will use
the survey questionnaire and social media platforms to gather informations and opinions from
different students. The researchers choose these learners because they are connected to the study.
However, researchers concealed their personal information such as their name. The participants
remain confidential.

The method that is used in the process of making this part of the study is the Snowball
technique. Snowballing is a non-probability sampling method that was employed to draw up a
sample of participants who provided adequate information for the investigation. Snowballing
sampling is a method whereby the researchers' refer one by one to another member (De Vos,
1998; McClure, 2001). Although the researchers relate to participants, the researchers selected
participants who were rich in information that is relevant to the study. The researcher is
responsible for putting together a sample of people from different backgrounds to get varied
data.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENTS

The research instrument used in the study is an interview questionnaire made by researchers
to collect data systematically from respondents to know the impact of working while studying.
The respondent of this study will be the Grade 12 Senior High School in Quezon City. The
questionnaire that the researchers used consists of the respondents' profiles, such as name
(optional), age, gender, and section. Questions about the effect of having to work while studying
and their recommendation For conducting the interview, the researchers will use an online
platform such as Messenger. With the use of the online platform, the researchers and the
respondents will have free access to the platform, which will help in collecting data without
having to meet each other for safety reasons. Open-ended questions related to the topic were
given to the respondents. Through that, the researchers will obtain the valid responses that will
be used in the study. In addition, the instrument used was approved by the researcher's instructor.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURES

In conducting the study, the researchers needs to have the letter of permission and consent
letter for the students who is a minor, that will be given by the instructor before conducting the
interview. The researchers will now find working students that is Grade 12 Senior High School
in Quezon City as a respondent to the study. Before the interview, the researcher will introduce
her/himself to the respondents to make the respondents more comfortable in doing the interview.
After that the researchers will now give the interview questionnaire with the use of online
platform, Messenger. In the process of answering the interview questionnaire, the respondent
will allow to have a time in answering the questions that given to them to be able to answer it
clearly. Lastly, the collecting of the data gathered in the respondents.

DATA ANALYSIS

The researchers used narrative analysis in conducting the study. Narrative analysis is a form
of qualitative research in which the researcher focuses on a topic and analyzes the data collected
from case studies, surveys, observations, or other similar methods. The researchers use narrative
analysis to fully understand the experience of the respondent in working while studying. In the
experience of the respondents, the researchers will interpretate the data gathered. That will be
used in the entire making of the study.

ETHICAL STANDARDS
