Abstract
People with similar interest, age group, background and social status forms a part of the Peer
Group. This type of peer group is both social and primary group of like-minded and
aesthetics group. The student’s behavioural change happens in the school wherein peers have
a vital role in achieving such a change. Role of peer influence has direct or indirect influence
in the academic achievement. Social and emotional development and educational objectives
are influenced by peer group. Peers play an increasing role of influence from early age to
teenage. Adolescents have healthy relationship with their peers and give importance to them
compared to other age groups and their trust. on them is more pronounced. Peer can be
anyone who has same thought, same behavior and equality to age or ability. Pressure means
giving force to any activities. Peer pressure means influence of friends on each other and
inducing changes in the mental and emotional behavior by the people belonging to same
group with similar interest, age, background and social status. Peer pressure normally linked
with adolescent risk taking behavior; such as crime, drug abuse and sexual behaviours. These
behaviours are associated with peer influence. The positive result also seen due to the effect
of peer pressure, for example a marked increase in the achievement, voluntary charity, public
work etc. But contrarily, the maximum result is for negative behaviour. Normally, the student
skips classes, steals, and cheats, takes to drugs or alcohol as a cause of peer pressure.
Influences of peer may be in all ages and places, such as in work place, in school, or in
society. Peer pressure tends to influence the group to loiter in the street, watch films, bunk
class, tease others, steal, spoil public properties. Academic achievement are accomplished by
these students in their studies are nothing. Academic achievement means the students’ ability
to write or orally communicate exactly the fact or the content. This also reflects to what
extent the educational system has achieved their goals. Academic achievement indicates the
extent to which the students have a mastery of the subject.

Introduction
Aim- Through this paper we will make an attempt to understand the different aspects of peer
pressure which can affect the academic performance of a student. As this paper is going to be
highly dependent on surveys, the paper will use different measurables and through the
method of correlation of both the attributes, we will make an attempt to understand how will
these both play a vital role or not in the lives of the students.
Purpose- This study will further on help us carry out our research in terms of how can peer
pressure not be a factor in determining the academic results of the students, it will also help
us develop a curriculum which will focus on these external factors determining the
importance of these different factors that actually play a role in the lives of these students.
The entire objective of this study will be to find a correlation between these two variables
using similar attributes, so that it helps us summarise the impact of peer pressure in similar
measurables.

Research Methodology
This paper will be assisted with a lot of different questionnaires that have taken place in the
past thus this paper will not be dependent on primary research, but these surveys that we will
be referring to throughout the paper are going to have credibility, the survey we will be using
is going to be conducted by psychologist experts, these people have done a brilliant job in
understanding how peer pressure and academic achievements could be measured through
similar variables, this makes it a lot more easier for us to carry out correlation. This paper
will be totally based on responses from school students which will further on help us analyse
the results of the data analysis.

Data Analysis
The following study has been carried out between 145 students by sending them a
questionnaire that helps us understand their academic performance and their influence on
peers and by peers. This further on helps us come up with the following tables that help us
understand these different aspects through the following the measurables.

Range Peer Pressure Academic Achievements

Below 33 % 3 49

33% to 66% 41 87

Above 66 % 101 9
From the above table we can make a few observations-
 Peer Pressure is extremely high amongst students- As we, from the results of the
survey that were conducted, we see that about 100 students are highly influenced by
their peers, this shows us that peers in fact do play a very important role in the lives of
students. young person can experience peer pressure in varying degrees. Sometimes
their peers may proactively influence them to behave in certain ways and at other
times they may be just following along.
 Academic Performance is affected- Although we cannot prove this observation with
correlation right now, but just the mere observation of the facts helps us understand
the academic performance in the school is not that great, which further makes the
correlation analysis a lot more important as it helps us understand whether there is
truth to these observations or not

Correlation Data Analysis

  Column 1 Column 2

Column 1 1

Column 2 -0.6188613 1

Before understanding the correlation analysis we need to understand a few things, the table
above indicating academic achievements and peer pressure is not propionate, as the value
increases it shows us how peer pressure is high but the academic performance is also
increases. This is an important observation to make because it helps us understand whether
peer pressure is good or bad. After correlation we make the following observations-
 As we see that there is a negative correlation but as the correlation is less than 0.75, it
is a weak negative correlation. This helps us further on understand that peer pressure
in no way plays a positive role in the academic achievements of a students who have
participated in this survey.
 As mentioned above, we also notice that there is a weak correlation between these
two variables, which means that peer pressure necessarily is not that significant of a
factor that plays a role in the academic achievements of students, this further on also
puts a stop to our assumption about peer pressure having an impact on the students.
Although peer pressure does have an impact on students, this data analysis shows us
why we can’t materialise it just yet in terms of a student’s academic performance.

Scope
This study helps us understand and opens up door for questions such as whether external
involvement of different factors can play a role or not affecting the life of a student, this is a
very important question which further on opens up the a lot more research loops, for example
the necessary changes required in the curriculum, the evolving life of student etc. This study
is strictly limited to 140 students of just one school but the probability of us getting the same
result with a much more larger sample size is just the same, characteristics of these students
do not change from time to time. This data analysis to understand the academic achievements
of the students and various factors that play a role can also be done by understanding these
different factors and breaking them down to uniform measurables.

Limitations
This study would have benefited a lot more if it were done with the help of primary research
as it would be assisted with the data in status-quo. As the research needs to abide by a few
restrictions in terms of word limit and scope of research, we could not further on explore
interesting topics such as peer pressure anymore. This paper also lacked a significant amount
of secondary research in terms of analysis of the variables independently as concepts, which
make the study a lot more comprehensive.

Conclusion
Students involved in antisocial behaviour that is when they deviated from their normal
behaviour may also encourage their friends to involve in the abnormal activities which
declines the academic achievement. studied trajectories of associations with delinquent
friends by using a global measure of delinquency that included problem behaviours such as
aggression, destruction, and substance abuse. This study reveals that the peer pressure is one
of the source for deviant behaviour among school children. When their behaviour is
something deviated, automatically their academic achievement also is getting declined. And
this study also reveals that girl children are easily anguished than the male children towards
peer influence. Children are prone to deviancy at the age group 16-18 than the other younger
groups.
