COMPARATIVE ESSAY: HUMANS OF NEW YORK AND THE GENTLEMAN C’s

The story of ‘The Gentleman C’s’ by Padget’s Powell is about a child who is old enough to make
decisions for himself and a father who is trying to fulfill his dream by finishing his degree at the age of
sixty-two. Due to the grades he receives after his examination, which prevented him from graduating he
died due to heart attack.

The story of Humans of New York is about the father and child relationship, wherein the child is living
her life based on the rules and decisions made by her superior father. She felt that her father is
controlling her life even though he would explained it to her that what he’s been doing for her was all
for her future. But through constant interaction and communication between them their story ends
well. The theme of the story is about love and compassion wherein the father was able to cope and
battle his past demons and become a compassionate person to her child. The story was developing into
a brighter side.

The theme of the Powell’s story was about revenge which turn into an unexpected event in the story.
But details were not given much of an emphasis on this. It has a surprising element as a result of their
cultural gap.

Stanton’s structure of the story was in narrative form and somehow the reader was able to predict its
ending, except for the turn of event that the mother had to leave her family.

While Powell’s story was describing how his father raised him as a child and the ‘C’ that he gave him
reflected how he was treated by his father from his childhood. He has some resentment towards his
father maybe because he was strict back then. While growing up he still hold grudges against him and
later it became a devastating relationship between them and it’s too late and the relationship they have
will never be fixed.

Stanton’s story started with a not-so-good relationship between the father and daughter but through
after having some therapy they grew closer and started to communicate their feelings with each other.
At first the daughter considered her father as a strict one, but later on she realized that it was his way of
showing his care, love and affection towards her. In the end, both are willing to fix their relationship and
live a harmonious life.
