FAMILY
Describe a family member you spend the most time with.
You should say:
 Who this person is
 What kind of person he/she is
 What you usually do together
And explain why you spend the most time with him/her.

A: Hello girl, it’s nice to meet you. Let me introduce a little bit about myself. My name is Thu and I’m
a student from Dalat University.
B: Hello Thu, nice to meet you. I’m Thien and I’m from Dalat University too.
A: really?
B: yeah. What are you doing here?
A: I and my family are going on a picnic
B: that’s sounds interesting. How many people are there in your family?
A: There are 3, me and my parents, I’m a single child.
B: Oh, the same to me, my family also has 3.
A: Nice! Is that your mother? You two look alike.
B: Yes, she is my mother. Her name is Laura.
A: Nice! Who are you closest to in your family?
B: It’s my mother for sure
    How about you?
A: Just like you, I often spend time with my mother the most.
B: What does she do now?
A: She has been working as a high school teacher for 11 years. She teaches History.
B: Interesting. What kind of person she is
A: She is a gentle, caring, and open-minded person. I hardly see my mother get bad-tempered or
losing her control. As a teacher or a mother, I admire her for her character. I feel comfortable and
relieved when I’m with her. Whenever I have a problem, she is always the first one I want to share
and confide in. For me, she is not just a mom, but also a friend, a mentor. She has a wide range of
knowledge and practical life experiences, so she can give me proper advice, guide me the right way to
get over my trouble.
B: My mom is also caring, kind-hearted, she takes the responsibility to take care of the whole family
unconditionally. She and I are like close friends, we share with each other everything that we come up
with in everyday life. Unlike your mom a little bit, she is quite strict and disciplined. If I do something
wrongly, it is easy to see her turns red. However, I do know that she just wants the best for me.
A: How much time do you spend with her?
B: You know, she works at school all day, and I have my classes to attend, too. So we only have time for
each other in the evening and every weekend. We usually prepare dinner, do housework. Then watch
television together.
A: Wow, me neither. My mom is a wife house, she has most of her time at home, but I have to go to
school, and we gather together in the evening. And on weekend, we go shopping, sometimes picnic if
possible. I love spending time cooking with my mom. She has such a refined palate, I considered her
the best home cook I’ve ever met.
B: Have you ever done something that makes her sad/happy, contented?
A: Of course I have. When I was 10 years old, I was a naughty girl who used to play more than study.
This time, I had an upcoming final exam, my mom told me to stay at home and revise all my lessons.
However, I sneaked out to hang out with my friends. And sure, the bad result is predictable, I had
failed the math test, and that made my mother disappointed for a long time after that.
B: It is an unforgettable memory, right? There are many times that I make my mom upset because of my
bad behavior. We argued a lot. But I have changed and we still get along very well.
A: Ya great.
B: It’s almost noon, I think I have to go now.
A: It’s alright. It’s is great talking to you today
B: My pleasure.
A: Have a good day.
B: Thanks, bye.
A: See ya!
2. FRIENDS
Describe a friend you really like to spend time with. You should say:
 when and how you met
 how often you meet this friend
 what kind of personality your friend has
And say why you like to spend time with this particular friend.

A: Hello girl, it’s nice to meet you. Let me introduce a little bit about myself. My name is Thu and I’m
a student at Dalat University.
B: Hello Thu, nice to meet you. I’m Thien and I’m from Dalat University too.
A: really?
B: yeah. What are you doing here?
A: I and my friend are going on a picnic.
B: That’s sounds interesting. Is she your best friend?
A: Yes, her name is Sam. We have been friend since we were little kids. For about 18 years.
B: Wow, such a long-lasting relationship. I really appreciate it.
A: how about you, do you have any close friends?
B: Of course I have, we have known for 4 years, but now she is studying abroad, in Singapore.
A: What does she look like?
B: She is tall and thin, with an ideal height and a beautiful face, she looks like a high fashion model.
A: Wow, on the contrary, my best friend is not that tall, but she is really cute. I love her chubby
cheeks and bright smile.
B: What kind of personality does Sam have?
A: Sam has a great sense of humor, she often teases me, and tells joke which makes me laugh a lot.
However, inside, she is a caring and kind-hearted girl. Sometimes I feel like she acts as if she was an
older sister, she reminds me to get up early, have breakfast, and do homework on time. I appreciate
her for her characters
      How about yours?
B: Mine? As a volunteer at the local charity organization, my friend Mary is gentle and easy-going, she
always shows her generosity and friendliness to everyone. As she is a good student, sometimes, she
becomes my second teacher. She helps me a lot with my homework, makes me understand clearly the
lessons.
A: What do you guys often do together?
B: When Mary was in Vietnam, we used to have a good time together. We both love cooking and baking.
When we had time, we went shopping for food and baking ingredients. I have a sweet tooth, and Mary
has skillful techniques in making cake. Our favorites are donuts, birthday cake, and flan.
A: Sound interesting! You know, Sam and I are the same age and also, we are classmates. We spend
time at school studying together. At weekend, or when we have leisure time, we often go picnic, or go
to the movie theater. Besides, if we feel too lazy to go out, we just stay home and share our favorite
songs, then listen to all of them.
B: What are the reasons do you think that makes you two close.
A: We were born and grew up together, we have a lot in common. However, the most important is
that there are mutual trust and honesty. I feel comfortable and relieved when I’m with her. Whenever
I have problem, she is always the first one I want to share and ask for advice. For me, she is not just a
friend, but also a shoulder to lean on.
B: Yeah, I agree with your point of view, trust and sympathy are the reasons why I and my best friend
have got along well for such a long time. We can confide everything we come up with in life without
worrying about anything. Even though we are now far away, we still keep in touch and maintain our
relationship as before.
A: When will she return from Vietnam?
B: She has studied in Singapore for 2 years, maybe she will return in just 1 year later.
A: Nice! I hope you guys could meet again soon.
B: Oh, thanks. But it’s almost noon, I think I have to go now.
A: It’s alright. It’s is great talking to you today
B: My pleasure.
A: Have a good day.
B: Thanks, bye.
A: See ya!

Describe a special meal you have had
You should say:
 where you had it;
 who you had it with;
 what you ate;
And explain it was special for you

A: Hello girl, thank you for picking up my wallet, it’s so nice of you. Let me introduce a little bit
about myself. My name is Thu and I’m a lecturer at Dalat University.
B: No problem, lady, nice to meet you. By the way, I’m Thien and I’m an accountant.
A: Oh nice!
B: Yeah. What are you doing here?
A: I am about to book a table for dinner.
B: That’s sounds interesting. Is this your first time coming there?
A: No, I have been to this French restaurant many times, it is my favorite one.
B: Ah nice! Have you ever had a special meal here?
A: Of course, I had dinner with my boyfriend for our first date, and also the first time I came here
    How about you?
B: I had a special meal too, but not here. I remembered it was at the Chinese restaurant. It is on Queen
Street, near my apartment.
A: Ya, I know it. Such a good one. Who did you go with?
B: I went with my husband on our 10th wedding anniversary. It was the day I will never forget. We had
a really good time enjoying ourselves together.
A: What did you order for your meal?
B: We ordered a 3-course meal, an appetizer, then the main dish, and a dessert. To start the meal, we
had some egg rolls and Dimsums. For the main dish, we ordered Tofu with soy sauce and a piece of
pork with green pepper on it. The Tofu was marinated and seasoned perfectly. The pork was a little bit
dried but I did not mind about it. Moreover, the dessert was the best, I am a sweet tooth, so I ordered a
bowl of fresh fruits and an apple pie.
How about you? Are there any special dishes you tried?
A: First, we had vegetables salad and chicken soup. The vegetables were fresh and contained some of
my favorites such as broccoli and carrot. Then for the main dish, we had beef steak served with a
spicy sauce, but not too spicy; in fact, they came together very well. Finally, I have a bowl of
chocolate mousse, it was made by a French chef, so it brought us the original French flavor, creamy
and delicious.
B: Why do you think that the meal was special for you?
A: I think that because this meal marked an unforgettable event in my life – my wedding anniversary.
Also, I was impressed with the decorations, it make us feel the Chinese culture around us. In
addition, the price for each dish is reasonable, not too expensive, it suits for people from many walks
of life.
B: I see. And about me, it was special as it was the first meal I had with my dad after 2 years he had
served in the army. He is French, too, and he loves the cuisine of his hometown.
A: You are definitely a caring daughter!
Do you think that you will return there more time?
B: Of course I will, a French restaurant is always my first choice when I want to eat out. I hope to have
more free time to go there with my family or friends for example.
A: Me either, I think I will try them one day.
B: It’s almost noon, I think I have to go now.
A: It’s alright. It’s is great talking to you today
B: My pleasure.
A: Have a good day.
B: Thanks, bye.
A: See ya!

a student at Dalat University.
B: Hello Thu, nice to meet you. I’m Thien and I’m from Dalat University too.
A: really?
B: Yeah. What are you doing here?
A: I and my sister are buying some food and drinks.
B: Are you going to prepare a meal?
A: Ah, no, I am preparing for my family’s picnic at weekend.
B: That’s sounds interesting. Does your family often go picnic?
A: Yes, every weekend.
How about you, what do you and your family do when you have leisure time?
B: When we have time, we gather and play badminton. Usually on Saturday evening and Sunday
morning.
A: All your family members join this activity together right?
B: Of course, my parents and even my 6 years old sister join too.
A: Me either, after a week working, studying hard, we want to spend our precious time to relax and
get out of stress.
B: That’s nice. Where is your favorite place to go picnic?
A: The Water Park is always on the top of the list. It has a large grass lawn, the atmosphere there is
peaceful, and everything adapts to our conditions for a perfect picnic. However, sometimes we would
like to go somewhere new, such as the hill near my father’s farm.
And you, where do you usually go to play your sport?
B: It’s a pity, my family lives in an apartment, so we do not have our own space or yard to play. We
have to go to the Sports Centre, or the Mini Stadium in the middle of the city, quite far from where we
live. We rent a medium field to play. The cost is not too expensive, about 50.000 dongs per hour, and we
often play for about 1 and a half hours.
A: Well, that is a reasonable price.
B: Ya, true. Hmm. Can you tell me more about what you prepare before a picnic?
A: Sure, because we do not go overnight, I and my mother only have to prepare foods and drinks.
Sometimes we buy in the supermarket, or if there is time left, my mom will cook. We often have
vegetables salad, slicing bread, sandwiches with jam. Also plenty of fresh fruit and juice.
A: There are many activities that we do. We have lunch, then play some games. And the rest of the
evening, we lay on the green grass and just talk, enjoy the quietness.
B: I can feel how interesting it is.
B: Haha, you know, like, playing badminton does not require anything complicated. We just need to
wear comfortable clothes, bring our racket and shuttlecock, and then start enjoying our time together.
A: How do you feel when you are with your family?
B: To be honest, I am not a big fan of badminton or any sport else. But spending time with my family
makes me feel comfortable and relieved. Not only helps us keep fit, stay healthy, but also creates a
chance for every member to maintain our love and relationship. It will become memories after I have to
go to university and live far away from my family.
A: I see. Nothing is more important than family.
B: It’s almost noon, I think I have to go now.
A: It’s alright. It’s is great talking to you today
B: My pleasure.
A: Have a good day.
B: Thanks, bye.
A: See ya!
5. HEALTH
Describe a health problem you or someone you know had
You should say
what it was -
how you had this health problem -
what you or this person had to do to get better -
and say how you/ this person felt about this health problem

A: Hello girl, it’s nice to meet you. Let me introduce a little bit about myself. My name is Thu and I’m
a student at Dalat University.
B: Hello Thu, nice to meet you. I’m Thien and I’m from Dalat University too.
A: really?
B: yeah. Can I ask you some questions?
A: In what ways do you try to stay healthy?
B: Being a health-conscious person, I try to improve my state of health by combining regular exercise
with a balanced diet. To be more specific, I reduce my meat intake and eat fresh fruit and vegetables
which contain plenty of fiber as well as vitamins. In addition, I generally have a medical check-up with
my doctor every 6 months to help find potential health issues before they become a problem.
A:  Wow, that's great. You look so pretty.
B: thanks, you're too kind. Do you play any sport? What are the health benefits of playing a sport?
A: I play volleyball. I think playing sports  benefit us both physically and mentally. Playing sports
helps  control weight, combat health conditions, and boost energy. Besides, scientists suggest that
physical activities stimulate various brain chemicals that may leave you feeling happier and more
relaxed.
B: Do you think people pay attention to their health enough these days?
A: In my point of view, the answer is no. Most people nowadays tend to lead a sedentary lifestyle and
not  attach much importance to their diet. As life is  more and more hectic, most people are occupied
with their jobs and find it difficult to prepare daily meals. They tend to resort to fast food like pizza or
hamburgers which are  high in cholesterols and do not have any nutrients at all. Since the
appearance of smartphones and social media, plenty of people spend a great deal of time surfing the
Internet or browsing their news feeds and rarely do physical exercise. That’s the reason why the
proportion of overweight people is increasing.
B: Thank you for answering my questions.
A:  Nothing, What about you, do you think the same as me?
B: For me, health and fitness mean a lot to our lives, so people find many ways to have good health. You
should maintain a healthy diet. Healthy foods such as vegetables, fruit, grains, etc., are an important
part of keeping my body's nutrition at its optimum. Processing fatty and sugary foods don't give the
immune-boosting protection that healthier food does. Sugary foods can decrease immune function. Next,
you had better drink 2-litter- water a day to provide enough amount of water for your body. Finally,
make sure that you get adequate sleep every night, get at least seven to eight hours of sleep nightly.
A: Wow….. Please protect your health!
B: Ok, same to you. See you again.
A: Ok, bye.

many beautiful scenes for us to take pictures, and there are a lot of people hanging out
B: Do you like it!
A: Yeah , I felt very happy when I joined the Christmas atmosphere and I saved a lot of pictures .
What about you, what holiday do you like ?
B: I think , I feel the happiest during Tet holiday .Because before Tet, the Vietnamese prepare
many things for the three main days. They clean their house and decorate with flowers such as a
kumquat tree. A huge amount of food will be bought before Tet for making traditional dishes.
Banh Chung, Banh Tet, Gio cha, Xoi and Mut, … are the foods that must be eaten on Tet
holidays. Another custom is giving lucky money, which is put into a red envelope as a symbol of
luck and wish for a new age. The atmosphere here is very bustling, full of laughter .

A: Oh nice!
B: Yeah. What will you do after graduation?
A: I think after finishing school I will become an English teacher. Because my major is English
Pedagogy.
B: Oh really! You must be loving your future job so much.
A: Yes, I love it.

loves her job. I feel it and so do I!
B: I really admire you. Do you find it difficult?
A: Yes, every job has its disadvantages.
Disadvantages:
+ Teaching is a very hard job and requires a lot of sacrifice in silence.
+ The teaching profession is only leisurely with teachers who are not responsible for the
profession. In addition to the regular teaching hours, when returning home, teachers also have to
prepare lesson plans, grade assignments, and record books
+ The low salary makes many teachers not eager to work.
B: Hope that you will become a good teacher.
A: Thanks! And how about you, what will you do in the future?
B: I would love to become a lawyer.
A: Oh, your major is Law Study, right?
B: Haha, you got it.
A: What do you think about that job?
B: I chose this industry not only because of my mother's wish but because of the attraction of this
industry. I hope that with the choice of Law major, I will have a serious learning process, logical
thinking, problem synthesis skills... in a scientific way to help me find the key to revealing things. I need
some clarification. However, this industry has some difficulties that I need to overcome:
+ Studying Law is learning “for life”
+ Difficult to follow the Law when there is no passion
+  Law is a high-pressure industry
A: Hope that you will become a good lawyer.
B: Oh, that right, thanks very much. All the best.
A: See you again. Bye
B: Bye!
8 . TRAVEL/ HOLIDAYS

a student at Dalat University.
B: Hello Thu, nice to meet you. I’m Thien and I’m from Dalat University too.
A: really?
B: Yeah, where did you go during the holiday 30/4-1/5?
A: I went to Nha Trang with my family.
B: That’s sounds interesting. I have never been there. How do you feel when you were there?
A: how wonderful. The air there is so fresh. The people there are so friendly and kind. The landscape
there is very beautiful, especially the sea. The seawater there is very beautiful.
B: Do you like it! What about food?
A: Not to criticize, the food here is very clean, the food is delicious, fresh. I like the grilled spring rolls
there the most, which have a very specific taste when coming here. After eating, we can walk around
the night market here, there are many souvenirs for you to bring back.
B: wow, love it!
A: For me, it was a nice vacation with my family. I will never forget it. What about you, tell me
B: Da Lat city is a city full of fog and flowers. The climate here is great, it's chilly, and it’s really nice.
The food here is hot and matches the atmosphere here. There are many beautiful scenes here, very
suitable for couples to travel. The people here are very friendly and sociable. If you have a chance, let's
come there once.
A: Sure, I will definitely try. I hope we meet soon again.
B: Me too. Have a good day.
A: Thanks, bye.
B: See ya!

9. THE CITY & THE COUNTRYSIDE

Describe your hometown
You should say:
o Where it is located
o What it is known for
o What languages are spoken there
o What the advantages and disadvantages of living there are

A: Hello girl, it’s nice to meet you. Let me introduce a little bit about myself. My name is Thu and I’m
a student at Dalat University.
B: Hello Thu, nice to meet you. I’m Thien and I’m from Dalat University too.
A: really?
B: yeah. Where do you live?
A: I live in Phan Thiet city with my family.
B: Do you like where you live?
A: Yes, I love Phan Thiet city
B Can you tell me about it?
A: Okay, it's a small thing. Phan Thiet is a miniature coastal city, it is located in the center of Binh
Thuan province. We love to call it the city of the blue sea - white sand - golden sunshine. When you
come here, you will feel the coolness of the sea air, the characteristic smell of Phan Thiet's fish
sauce, enjoy the delicious and fresh seafood caught by the locals, Visit Uncle Ho's relic, go to the big
market, and eat snacks. When you come here, you will experience sandboarding from above and
below, that feeling can't be found anywhere else. Not stopping there, the people here are very friendly
and sociable. However, there is one thing that I don't like very much, and that is the weather here. In
the summer it is very hot and sunny here, making it really hot to go out on the street. In the rainy
season, it rains heavily, making travel difficult for motorcyclists and nearsighted people.
B: How interesting!
A: Yes. What about you, do you like the city you are living in?
B: Of course.
A: Tell me a bit more?
B: My family is living in Da Lat city - a city full of fog and flowers. The climate here is great, it's chilly,
and it’s really nice. The food here is hot and matches the atmosphere here. There are many beautiful
scenes here, very suitable for couples to travel. The people here are very friendly and sociable.
However, there is one thing that I don't like very much, and that is the weather here. The weather here is
a bit cold and it rains a lot, making people afraid to go.  Have you ever been to Da Lat?
A: I haven't had a chance to visit it yet but I will definitely go there once.
B: Please go up there once! Hope to see you one day at da lat.
A: I hope so. Have a nice day. Bye.
B: Me too. Good-bye.
