Abstract
A comparative study carried out with objective selecting the melon varieties which are suitable for cultivation in the greenhouse in low coastal area of the country. Twelve entries
of muskmelon were evaluated for yield and fruit quality in a replicated trial during the period 2010-2013 in greenhouses at the Agricultural Technology Transfer Center of
Lushnje. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with three replications. Each cultivar in plot represented by 15 plants planted in a row with a length of 6.0 m.
Melons were harvested at full slip. ‘Centro F1’ produced the greatest yield of marketable melons (85 kv / dyn), but fruit quality was not significantly different from the others. Only
‘Galia F1’, ‘Inbar F1’ and ‘ Super sprint F1’ produced yields significantly lower than ‘Centro F1’ and 28-32% less than the average of the cultivars tested (55, 3 kv / dyn). Entries
with the greatest percentage of early yield were ‘Parnitho’ (61 %), ‘Niz 52-131’ (56 %) and ‘Galica’ (50 %) and those with the lowest were ‘Gallardo’ (15 %) and ‘Galia’ (18 %).
‘Parnitho F1’ had the character of high sugar content, excellent taste, rapid growth, but lower yield compared with ‘Centro F1’. ‘Dicty F1’, ‘Centro F1’, ‘Parnitho F1’ and ‘Niz 52-
131’ are suitable for cultivation in the greenhouse in low coastal area of the country, and this can be considered to further demonstrate and promote their distribution.

Key words: Greenhouse; cultivation; muskmelon; yield; fruit quality.

Introduction
- Melon(Cucumis melo L.) ranks as a major vegetable crop around the world
- Many people in lowland and coastal area of the Albania have small surface, with limited vegetable gardening space
- Greenhouses are increasing rapidly in Albania.
- There are limited extension recommendations for melon production in spring plastic greenhouses.
- There are some cultivar recommendations, but they are not consistent

Objectives:
Selecting the Cucumis melo varieties which are suitable for cultivating in spring plastic greenhouse in lowland and
coastal areas of the country

Methods
- Location: Agricultural Technology Transfer Center (ATTC), Lushnje;
- Period : 2010 – 2013;
-Design: 12 cultivars(Table 1), spring season production, randomized complete block with three replications;
-Plant spacing was 0.4 m between plants and 1.2 m between rows with a plant density of 2.08 plants/m2;
-Plots were single 6.0 m rows with 15 plants;
- Fruits were harvested at full-slip stage, 8 harvests;
-Harvest data collected included number of fruit per plant, number of culled fruit, fruit weight, flesh thickness,
soluble solids content (SSC), and firmness. Culled fruit were described as being less than 25% netted and/or
damaged. These variables were measured on each harvest day.

Results and Discussion

In these experiments, many of the ‘Galia’-type cultivars exhibited equal or higher SSC than the original ‘Galia’ as well
as increased firmness, high yields and most important to greenhouse production, tolerance to powdery mildew.

Conclusion
The Dicty F1’, ‘Centro F1’, ‘Parnitho F1’ and ‘Niz 52-131’ cultivars are suitable for cultivation in the greenhouse in
lowland and coastal areas, and this can be considered to further demonstrate and promote their distribution.
