Art History - Carla Bosch

By: Caitlin Lenorud

Artwork and Artist Background

The artist I researched is Carla Bosch. The painting I selected is

called “Almost Home.” She liked to paint with acrylics on canvas.

The piece was created recently, in the Holocene time period. The

exact date is unknown. Carla was born in Pretopia, South Africa on

January 14, 1976. She grew up and studied in South Africa and

obtained an Interior Design degree from Tshwane University of

Technology. She never formally studied art. Her father however

was a great influence on her and she inherited his talent. His name

was Anton Gericke. Carla currently resides in California since

2015.

Major Accomplishments of the Artist

Carla has won numerous awards including the Randy Higbee

Award (2014), Best Acrylics of 2014 International Competition, and

the 2015 Best of Plein Air Show. She has also been juried into the

2017 La Quinta Arts Festival, 16’, 17’, and 18’ Festival of Arts, the

2019 In Plein Air Texas award of excellence. She was invited to

teach and speak in Russia at the Art Life Fest. Carla has been

awarded the Museum Purchase Award along with the Best Body

of Work Award.
What makes their Art Unique

Carla’s preffered style is Plein Air painting. I have never heard of

this before so I am glad I was able to research more about it. It is

essentially where artists do not create in a studio but out in the

surrounding area of what you want to paint. It is currently a

flourishing trend that allows artists to be present while the

lightening changes in nature and you can catch the colors

changing in the landscape. Artists must be well prepared and

organized to spend all day dedicated to their piece without having

to leave for anything they might need. She also takes photos to

recreate when she does work in the studio. Carla influences other

artists by hosting workshops and even doing online tutorials. Her

work is significant to where she is from because of the lively and

colorful images she captures in her landscape paintings. Her art

has been very popular in South Africa as well as around the world.

She wants to spread “Fearlessness” in art.

How I would use this piece in the classroom

I would use this piece in my classroom to get students excited

about art. I think it is cool to watch an excited artist work and

explain while working. I really enjoyed watching her on Youtube

talk about her work and painting style. She even talks about her

materials used. I think this could make students excited to paint or

to try different styles of art because she has such amazing energy

and clearly gets joy out of painting. I would use her work in a

non-western art lesson. I think her pieces are stunning and

interesting to look at which makes her a great artist in my eyes.
