DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE & INFORMATICS

Course Code: BIT 317/COM 460E
Course Title: NETWORK DESIGN & CONFIGURATION
Lecturer: Vancy Kebut
Contact: vkebut@karu.ac.ke

Course Purpose
This course aims to provide an understanding of the principles of networking, network design
and network architecture and infrastructures.

Course Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course the learner should be able to:
i. Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of networking principles;
ii. Be able to understand and articulate network architectures and principles based on
network analysis and design requirements relating to the organizational and
stakeholder objectives and network standards;
iii. Demonstrate an understanding of configuring networking devices and deploy key
techniques to meet the network and stakeholder requirements;
iv. Demonstrate the ability to trouble-shoot and support networks, design load-balanced,
redundant and fault-tolerant mechanisms to meet the network and organizational
requirements;
v. Develop and apply standards, legislation, professionalism and strategies for verifying
that the measures taken during a design and implementation of a network
architecture;
vi. Effectively communicate information, arguments, and analysis, in a variety of forms,
to technical and non-technical audiences.
