Document Development Exposition: Workplace Correspondence

Explain in detail your document’s development from planning to finish, describing your
challenges, how you overcame them, and what you learned.

Planning
I planned to write about the increasing problem of water scarcity, and I wanted to promote ways to
conserve water on social media. I outlined my memo and email to provide a visualization of how the
assignment would flow. I also created a style guide that included specific spacing, colors, and fonts to
make sure everything would be visually appealing for my audience.

First Draft (for peer editing)

For the first draft, I mainly laid out all the information in the correct order and implemented my style
guide to include attractive colors. One challenge I found throughout this process was trying to keep
everything concise and not providing too much information.

Second Draft (for your packet)

For the second draft, I cleaned up some of the sentences and polished the references so that
everything would look more professional. I went back and edited some of the information so that I
didn’t have any unnecessary details that would distract the readers.

Final Draft (for your portfolio)

For the final draft, I decided to add a subject line for the email and remove some unnecessary
information in the first paragraph. This information was not needed since the audience already work
for American Rivers Organization. In addition, I added how they should contact me and what
information they should provide. I also added a signature block to include contact info. For the
memo, I decided to remove the “Problem” heading and make the subheadings match the other
headings to help the memo flow better. I also added more information in the introductory paragraph
to help the reader understand what the purpose of the memo is, and I revised my recommendation
section to include more actionable steps.
