Culturally Responsive Art Lesson

I Title: “Art of Japan”

Objectives: “To introduce students to the Art of Japan, it’s culture and people.”
Lessons like these teach students the cultural background and meaning of
certain things in a culture.

*The source of this lesson provides numerous example of art projects to do (not just the kimono I posted)*

II Name of blog/article you read on the anti-racist google site that is connected to the lesson
you found: “#IAmNotACostume
What is the Costume Campaign...And Why Do We Do It?”

III Where does this lesson fall on the spectrum? Why do you say that?

- I believe the lesson I found is culturally responsive because it introduces and educates the
students on the cultural background, importance, and meaning of certain items, clothing,
activity, or practice in a culture, specifically Japan’s. In the article, “I am Not a Costume”
explains to the readers why it’s oppressing and offending someone’s culture when they
use it as a costume or aesthetic. By educating people of other cultures’ traditions and
backgrounds, it would avoid people from culture appropriating and for people to
appreciate it instead.
