surface
● Students should be familiar with the terms erosion and weathering
Standards:
ESS1.C: The History of Planet Earth
Some events happen very quickly; others occur very slowly, over a time period much longer
than one can observe
ESS2.A: Earth Materials and Systems
Wind and water can change the shape of land
Students will be able to understand and Worksheet on weathering and erosion where
identify examples of erosion and weathering students will have to figure out which earth
event is occurring and why
Resources: (List materials, include any online or book references and resources)
● Powerpoint
● Document Camera
● Erosion and Weathering worksheet
● Post it notes
● Pencils
● I will pass out the sticky notes for students to draw there example of weathering
● When finished students will put it on the white board
● I will then pass out the weathering erosion worksheet
● When finished I will tell students to put it in their homework folder on the keep at home
side
● Students will have all utensils needed inside their desk
1. Lesson beginning: I will begin by asking students what they remember about
weathering. Then I will ask them what they remember about erosion.
2. Next we will begin going through the slideshow. The first slide asks what weathering is,
and then explains it with images.
3. The rest of the slideshow is images of different types of weathering and what causes it.
We will discuss these as a class as we go through them.
4. We will then watch a short video on weathering and erosion
5. I will then ask students to draw examples of weathering on a post it note and have them
stick them on the white board when they are done.
6. Then I will ask how are these examples of weathering?
7. Once that is finished I will pass out the weathering and erosion worksheet. We will do
this together as a class. I will ask students whether each image is an example of
weathering or erosion. Then I will ask another student why. We will write these answers
together and I will project them on the document camera so students can copy the words.
When finished students will put this on their keep at home side of their homework
folders.
8. Closing Activities: To finish the lesson, I will once again ask students what is weathering
and what is erosion. “Then I will have them learn the saying “weathering breaks, erosion
takes!”
