● An abandoned baby will result in an automatic ZERO for the “parent”.
● This project will be worth 500 points!
● All students must turn in during their assigned class, on the last day
of the project the following times
● Sugar Baby Books will be due Monday, March 8th!
The purpose of this activity is for you to better understand what is involved in the
day-to-day care of an infant. To accomplish this, you have been given a ‘SUGAR
BABY” to take care of for a few days. It is your responsibility to see that the
“baby” receives proper care and attention and remains healthy for the entire
project.
You will have to do more than just carry this “sugar baby” around. Below are the
guidelines for this project. Refer to these often, because the grade you will
receive on this project will be determined by them.
GUIDELINES:
You should give your baby care and attention. This is evident in what you provide for
your child. He should have as pretty a face as his genes will allow. He should have
a sturdy carrier or basket, blankets, and other items. You should also show our
child love and attention by treating it in a caring manner at all times.
You must keep your baby safe. This means you cannot leave him in your locker, or
unattended at all, anywhere!!! You should not let other people care for your baby
if you cannot trust them to take good care of it. Remember you are still
ultimately responsible for the welfare of your child. If something does happen,
you will have to provide evidence that it was an accident.
You should have your baby with you at all times. At school, you
must have your baby with you at all times!!
If you absolutely cannot be with your baby for unavoidable reasons, you may hire a
babysitter. You are allowed only 5 hours of baby sit time for the entire project.
You must work out some sort of payment arrangements with your babysitter.
Don’t take advantage of your friends or parents. He/She must sign the babysitter
form. In addition, you must keep a record of where your baby is at all times on
the time schedule form.
Furthermore, you will keep a diary for the day you care for your “sugar baby” . In it you
will describe the events of the day, and your feelings about caring for your sugar
baby.
1. Failure to Thrive
Definition:
B. cerebral palsy.
C. heart disease.
D. infections.
E. milk allergy.
F. cystic fibrosis.
G. celiac disease.
What is done about severe failure to thrive?
How Is FTT Treated? Treatment of failure to thrive depends upon the age of the child, the associated
symptoms and the underlying reason for the poor growth. The overall goal of treatment is to provide
adequate calories and any other support necessary to promote the growth of your child.
A cough that lasts more than 2 or 3 weeks. Persistent or severe vomiting . A fever that doesn't go down or
go away. Symptoms that last more than 10 days or get worse instead of better
2. Growth Charts
List 5 facts from the article
A. Growth charts are a standard part of your child's. They show how kids are growing compared with other kids of
the same age and gender. They also show the pattern of kids' height and weight gain over time, and whether
they're growing proportionately.
B. And one set of charts is used for babies, from birth to 36 months. Another set is used for kids and teens ages
2–20 years old. Also, special growth charts can be used for children with certain conditions, such a \or who were
C. Being in a high or a low percentile doesn't necessarily mean that a child is healthier or has a growth or weight
problem. Let's say that the 4-year-old boy who is in the 10th percentile for weight is also in the 10th percentile for
height. So 10% of kids are shorter and weigh less than he does, and most kids — 90% — are taller and weigh
more. That just shows that he's smaller than average, which usually doesn't mean there is a problem. If his parents
and siblings are also smaller than average, and there are other signs that he's healthy and developing well, doctors
would likely decide that there's no reason to worry.
D. If height and weight have both been on the 60th percentile line until a child is 5 years old, and then the height drops
to the 30th percentile at age 6, that might suggest a growth problem because the child is not following his or her usual
growth pattern. But changing percentiles doesn't always mean there's a problem. Many kids may show changes in
growth percentiles at some points in development, when it's normal for growth rates to vary more from child to child. This
is particularly common during infancy and
E. The higher the percentile number, the bigger a child is compared with other kids of the same age and gender,
whether it's for height or weight.

C. School age.
E. Infant. Infants develop new abilities quickly in the first year of life. ...

in a hospital's newborn intensive care unit (also called NICU). This is the nursery in a hospital where sick
newborns get medical care. Premature babies stay in the NICU until their organs develop enough to stay
alive without medical support.
Why would a baby born much larger than an average baby have problems?
Fetal macrosomia is more likely to be a result of maternal diabetes, obesity or weight gain during
pregnancy than other causes. If these risk factors aren't present and fetal macrosomia is suspected, it's
possible that your baby might have a rare medical condition that affects fetal growth
A healthy baby newborn is expected to lose _________ % to __________% of the birth weight, but may regain that
weight gain within the first __________ weeks after birth.
Most newborns go through a period of rapid growth when they are _______ to _________ days old and again at
________ and _________ weeks.
Babysitter Statements
The purpose of the Sugar Baby activity is to help students better understand the
responsibilities of being a parent. One main concern is the care of a child on a day
to day basis.
The student should care for the Sugar Baby themselves unless they are 100%
unable. (example: work, game, illness, etc..) In this case, the student may contract a
babysitter.
