Chapter 3: Evidence-Based Policing and the Role of Crime Analysis and Police Matters
Problem-Oriented Policing and Crime Prevention Podcast
The third chapter of Crime Analysis with Crime Mapping provides an overview of a

structure for implementation of crime and its analysis into institutions as well as the role of crime

assessment in the most effective police approaches aimed at crime reduction. Data indicates that

although research has shown the relationship between the crime clearance rate and analysis, the

connection between crime clearance rate and crime analysis do not exist. Evidence of the cause

and effect of the connection presents more critical aspects describing the discrepancy in criminal

acts and clearance rates of the institutions involved in law enforcement. Crime analysis is much

like using an MRI to diagnose a problem (Santos, 2016). The analysis of crime does not have a

direct links to the reduction of crime. Its role is in the reduction which is understood by the

reviewing of effective crime reduction strategies by law enforcement such as the role of crime

analysis and evidence-based policing techniques. The standard framework of policing has

constrained efficiency and effectiveness in crime reduction. The model generally improvises

various strategies such as statistics and community policing programs such as patrol, detentions,

and investigation.

In the Policing matters podcast, Lieutenant Jason explains the various problem-oriented

policing interventions they used for crime prevention and lowering crimes that target iPhones

and MacBook users. They began with the enforcement phase where they used GPS baits which

was difficult since burglars used personal hotspots to lower suspicions (Policing Matters, 2018).

Then they followed up by using focus patrol where law enforcement patrolled the crime prone

areas. They use heat maps and CCTV surveillance to make arrests. In the learning programs they

offered in criminal law tactics such as crime triangle were used.

CHAPTER 3 3

Evidence-Based Police, the Role of Crime Analysis and Police Matters, Problem-oriented

policing and crime prevention are beneficial to law enforcement because they provide

comprehensive and meaningful crime detection strategies. They provide techniques to help

organize the production of crime detection items, execute policing solutions, and ensure

transparency and assessment.
