A Lively City on the Moselle and Rhine

Emperors, kings and princes have had their residences in Koblenz, and the uni-
que landscape has inspired many artists. Today Koblenz is attracting visitors
from all over the world. And the reasons are as diverse as the middle Rhine
metropolis itself.

The city of two rivers merges many influences into a multifaceted collage. At
Deutsches Eck (German Corner), the Moselle meets the Rhine and establishes
the cordial cosmopolitan character of the Koblenz people. History enthusiasts
will find traces of the over 2000-year history that links the Romans and knights
to modern times.

The location of the city at the heart of the four low mountain range does not
just excite nature lovers. The view of the Ehrenbreitstein fortress, which towers
over Koblenz and the two rivers as well as the wine hills and the historic city
centre, promises visitors that they will be able to discover an astonishing range
of variety.

Koblenz offers diversity and culture. Besides tours of the historic city centre,
strolls and multiple culinary delights, you are also sure to enjoy great cultural
achievements in the museums, theatre and Rhine philharmonic. If you descend
into the winding lanes of the historic city centre, you will experience the special
flair of the city, since the heart of Koblenz beats between the gables, timber-
frame buildings and wine taverns.

Unique Nature and Culture

Distant places very close: the countryside of Koblenz fulfils various trip dreams.
Go in search of the famous legends and discover castles and fortresses that lie
embedded in the original landscape. At myriad museums, you can delve into
the history that stretches back to the Celts in Rhineland-Palatinate.

Three sites in the countryside of Koblenz have been distinguished internatio-

nally as UNESCO world heritage sites. People interested in culture and nature
will discover the Upper Middle Rhine Valley with the world's greatest density
of fortresses, castles and strongholds. Exceptional traces of the Roman age
include the Upper German-Raetian Limes and the various Roman buildings
in Trier.

The region’s natural diversity can be discovered best of all by foot or bicycle.
Five spectacular trails which also include the Rheinsteig entice you to take
various tours. Excellently marked bike paths will lead you along the Rhine and
Moselle and also through the magnificent wine landscapes and over the airy
heights of the middle range mountains.

Reflecting after a day brimming with moving impressions is best with a glass
of wine. Nowhere else in Germany are there as many first-class vineyards so
close together.

Diversity is the road, experience the goal. Go on a very special discovery trip:
Delve into the time of the Romans, knights and romantics and learn about
their exceptional buildings: a magnificent city gate and amphitheatre, for-
midable fortresses and magical castles. Here you will find unique treasures
that are recognized as UNESCO world heritage sites. Discover sites of famous
legends and unforgettable views of the Rhine valley.

Let famous artists inspire you and feel the peace of a grand cloister in the

Traces of Power and Romanticism

The newly built cable car over the Rhine will bring you high up to the Ehren-
breitstein fortress, the Prussians’ never-destroyed stronghold. For the 2011
Federal Horticultural Show in Koblenz, large parts of the fortress have been
opened up and made accessible to visitors for the first time. A new landscape
park has been created on the Fortress plateau, which serves as a stage for
the grandiose flower and plant show. But before and also after the Federal
Horticultural Show, the fortress will offer a broad range of exhibitions and
gastronomy.

If the fortress demonstrates the Prussians’ fight for sovereignty, then Stoltzen-
fels Castle nearby attests to very different dreams. Here Friedrich Wilhelm IV
achieved his vision of Romanticism, with artists creating an oriental garden
and a landscaped park for him according to the designs of Joseph Peter Lenné.
For visitors to the Federal Horticultural Show, the grounds at Stolzenfels are a
magnificent supplement to the newly designed Lenné Garden at the Kurfürst-
liches Schloss (Electoral Palace) in Koblenz. So make sure you include a visit to
the castle in your programme.

Welcome to the 2011 BUGA in Koblenz

The 2011 Federal Horticultural Show (BUGA) will transform Koblenz, and one
of the oldest cities in Germany will unveil a new side of itself. If you know
Koblenz, you will discover new splendour in familiar places and be able to
explore previously closed areas for the first time. And if you have never visited
Koblenz, you will be enthralled by the newly designed Rhine promenades,
fresh green areas, modern-looking historical parks and the newly created con-
nection between the riverbanks, historical buildings, parks and city centre.

It will be the first Federal Horticultural Show in Rhineland-Palatinate. Koblenz

is looking forward to celebrating its change and to welcoming roughly
2 million guests to a summer-long festival. Visitors will be arriving from all of
Germany and neighbouring countries, and will experience the blossoming of
floral splendour and all the changes in the course of the seasons at three dif-
ferent areas from 15 April to 16 October 2011.

We invite you to an unforgettable visit: experience the blossoming splendour

of the garden directly in the centre of a cosmopolitan city, stroll down the
Rhine promenade, hover over the river in a cable car, and enjoy the sun, music,
art and culinary delights at the 2011 Federal Horticultural Show.

The support of our cooperation partners such as the Bundeskunsthalle, Keu-

kenhof, Köln Düsseldorfer Schifffahrt, Keramische Welten Höhr-Grenzhausen
and the Sportbund Rheinland will make the 2011 Federal Horticultural Show
in Koblenz an unforgettable experience.
Koblenz Changes

The 2011 Federal Horticultural Show will also change Koblenz beyond the sum-
mer-long festival. Under the motto “Koblenz changes”, the Federal Horticultural
Show will excite your visitors and give them new perspectives.

Let yourself be swept away by the floral splendour and variety of possible
discoveries. Garden and flower lovers will uncover the multifaceted character
of the plant world here. Current themes from the areas of environment, nature,
horticulture and art are presented innovatively and informatively. A diverse
programme of over 3,000 events will enrich your BUGA visit with music, sport
and culture.

The special thing about the 2011 Federal Horticultural Show is its central loca-
tion at the heart of the city. It is directly on the pulse of the middle Rhine me-
tropolis and simultaneously opens up broad views of the Rhine and Moselle.

Three special garden show areas will present the floral splendour and offer an
unusual interweaving of horticulture, history, architecture and landscape. Stroll
like the princes at Kurfürstliches Schloss (Electoral Palace) and experience how
tradition connects with modernity and formerly closed areas are open to
visitors for the first time. At the Blumenhof (Flower Garden) at Deutsches Eck
(German Corner), three gardens are linked by the band of culture. Here places
for international encounters are combined with areas of peace and contem-
plation, while the plateau of Ehrenbreitstein towers high over everything and
offers a breathtaking view and spacious park grounds.
Interesting Discovery Trips – Guided Tours

Discover and understand: go on a discovery trip at an innovative plant show.

The 2011 BUGA has a broad range of exciting tours for its visitors. Let yourself
be seduced into the “green world” with its myriad interesting subjects. Young
and old alike will uncover something new here and marvel at what they
already know. Specially trained BUGA guides will accompany your tour groups
through the three BUGA areas and will tell you about the city's history, above
all in the urban areas.

There will be public tours daily during the 2011 Federal Horticultural Show in
Koblenz. Likewise, there are special options for the blind, deaf and disabled to
let them experience the diversity of the garden show.

It is already possible to take part in guided tours right now. Take advantage
of this unique opportunity to experience and follow the transformation of
Koblenz and the emergence of the 2011 Federal Horticultural Show in Koblenz
before its opening in 2011.
Excitement for Children and Students

On the trail of green: whether playfully learning all about the “green world” or
experiencing exciting adventures – the Federal Horticultural Show also has a
diverse programme for young visitors.

Of special importance to the 2011 Federal Horticultural Show in Koblenz is in-

troducing children and students to the themes of nature and the environment.
Learning about trees, counting bugs, identifying plants, conducting experi-
ments: the Colourful classroom makes an unusual school day possible for
schools and kindergartens. With themes such as nature, water, health, art and
culture, “think globally – act locally” and technology, the Federal Horticultural
Show offers themes that extend far beyond the “green area”.

We have also not skimped on games and fun. Throughout the BUGA grounds,
there are exciting attractions for children and young people: four playgrounds,
including one water discovery world, a skate park and a nature climbing
garden. The motion-oriented climbing playground will be an unforgettable
experience for children, students and young adults.

During holidays, there will be numerous events for children and young adults.
Many games and interactive activities such as play mobiles, theatre and bands
await our older and younger visitors during the entire holiday season, while
mermaids, witches and robbers will greet visitors to the 2011 BUGA in Koblenz
during these weeks.
Relaxed Visit with the Best Service

Just be the guest: our extensive visitor service offers you a range of services to
make your day at the Federal Horticultural Show pleasant and unforgettable!

Paths without obstacles – the Federal Horticultural Show in Koblenz does not
have barriers for the most part. People with handicaps as well as parents with
strollers have unhindered access to all areas of the exhibition. There are also
handicap-accessible parking places and bathrooms. And naturally the restau-
rants are designed accordingly with enough space, while specially trained
service staff are also available. At the main entrance to the BUGA, handicapped
visitors can borrow power wheelchairs and folding wheelchairs.

In general, dogs are not allowed on the grounds of the Federal Horticultural
Show, with the exception of guide dogs. But you can leave your dog at our
expert dog care facility outside the grounds during the time of your visit to
the BUGA. The BUGA will open its gates in all three garden show areas from
9:00 am until half an hour before sundown. You can purchase admission tickets
from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm at the ticket office. The grounds can be entered from
9:00 am to 8:00 pm. For evening events, the opening hours may deviate accor-
dingly. Central information points are also included in the extensive infra-
structure and will provide answers to your questions. A sign system will show
you the way through the Federal Horticultural Show. And an alternative to the
cable car is the shuttle service which will bring you comfortably from the city
areas to the fortress.

1 Kurfürstliches Schloss (Electoral Palace)
Stroll like the princes: experience the magnificent palace gardens and the
romantic Rhine promenade. As a place brimming with history, the area at
Kurfürstliches Schloss (Electoral palace) falls under the theme of “Garden art:
a castle in flux”. History enthusiasts will discover how tradition and modernity
are combined. For the Federal Horticultural Show, time arcs will have pictures
and short texts about life in the Koblenz palace from the past to the present.

Besides the impressive floral splendour and a flowering, stylised crown in the
forecourt, garden lovers will also particularly enjoy the terrace garden behind
the castle, since here the plans of the Prussian landscape architect PJ. Lenné
were elaborately resuscitated with modern ideas. In the sense of “Rhine
Romanticism”, this is a place for readings and musical events as well as the hea-
ring and sound garden. For the first time, this garden will be open to visitors
and offer new paths through the palace garden to the Rhine promenade. The
close, spectacular river boulevard and the spacious sitting steps right on the
Rhine invite you to linger.

2 Blumenhof at Deutschen Eck (Flower Courtyard)

Experience the diversity of the cultures in the area of the Flower garden at
German corner with the theme “Garden experience: water, culture and art”.
A beautiful ambience was created for meetings here: right behind the eque-
strian statue, a forum invites you to watch the street artists as you enjoy
delicacies. Under the motto “Taste the Rhine”, visitors can try dishes from the
neighbouring Rhine states here.

Young visitors will encounter the wet element in the water playground, and
interesting exhibitions will address the subject of “Living in the flow”. The
interior areas of the three gardens, the Paradise garden, Flower garden and
Sculpture garden, invite you to let your soul drift and dedicate yourself to the
aspects of church, religion and art in these places of peace. The interiors of the
three gardens are embellished by an art and sculpture exhibition of the Ludwig
museum for global and Christian art.

3 Ehrenbreitstein Plateau
The largest area of the horticultural show will be on Ehrenbreitstein plateau,
which towers over the valley on the other side of the Rhine and offers fascinat-
ing views of the Rhine, Moselle and city. Its vastness and vistas make it stand
in exciting contrast to the two BUGA grounds in the city and pursues the theme
of “Garden knowledge: nature, environment and gardening”.

Gardening exhibitions and large flower halls offer plant friends interesting
views. Furthermore, themes related to nature and the environment, wine-
growing and useful plants are made something you can experience. Romantic
glades, a climbing garden imitating nature, historical gardens and the world
of ceramics are only a small selection of the colourful diversity that you can
discover here.

A special attraction is the viewing platform with spectacular 360 degree views:
the unusual wood construction is accessible to all and consists of 180 m long
walkways, and in one place, it extends 10 metres over the edge of the grounds.

4 Cable car
Discover the 2011 BUGA, Koblenz, and its countryside from the bird's eye
perspective. The breath-taking cable car ride over the Rhine to the Ehren-
breitstein fortress will be one of the highlights for visitors to the 2011 Federal
Horticultural Show in Koblenz.

Nowhere else on the Rhine is there such an opportunity to hover over the
Rhine valley so spectacularly. Its length of just under 850 metres and up to
7,000 riders per hour make it the largest of its kind in Europe outside the
Alps. 18 panorama cabins promise a unique view of the UNESCO world he-
ritage site Upper Middle Rhine Valley. For extra pleasure, one of the cabins
even has a glass floor. In a few minutes, the visitor will reach the spectacular,
colourful flower halls and the outdoor grounds around the time-honoured
Ehrenbreitstein fortress.

In the summer of 2010, the cable car will begin running for a few weeks. Into
autumn 2010 you will then see from the air how the BUGA grounds have
changed and will gain a completely new view of the city and countryside as
you hover in the sky. After the winter break, the cable car will start running
again at the beginning of the Federal Horticultural Show in April, 2011.
5 Flower Hall Shows
Experience plant worlds: the Federal Horticultural Show will not just have an
impressive variety of flowers and plants growing everywhere, but will also
present them in innovative ways. On Ehrenbreitstein plateau, more than
20 changing hall shows in two flower halls with an area of approx. 2,000 m2
will enthral visitors throughout the exhibition time.

Protected from the weather, garden lovers will be inspired and excited by the
wealth of the plant world, receiving information about horticulture and floristics.

The range of themes extend from native garden flowers to exotic ones like
bonsai and cacti and ultimately all the way to rarities such as carnivorous
plants. Other themes include room greening, orchids as well as roses and water
plants. If you want to design with flowers, you will find inspiration at the floristic
exhibitions, and hobby gardeners will experience useful information about
fruits and vegetables.

6 Green Expertise Centre

Here, the gardening professions will be presented and show interesting
aspects on the themes of gardening, landscaping, sport field construction,
vegetable gardening, tree nursery work and professional training. Hobby
gardeners will gain special insight into these areas, while young men and
women who must choose a career will also have an extensive pool of informa-
tion about green professions.
7 Outdoor Shows
Experience plant worlds: the outdoor shows stretch over 40,000 m2 and provide
an exciting discovery tour through the various themes related to horticulture while
illustrating the diversity of the application areas. Each of the three BUGA areas
come with a certain motto.

On Ehrenbreitstein plateau, the central theme is “Garden knowledge: nature, en-

vironment and gardens”. Besides the many exciting themes on breeding, growing
vegetables and wine, this area will also present the major environmental themes
of our time such as biodiversity and sustainability. The changing beds with 600,000
blossoming tulips and various shrubs will also ensure another optical highlight.

Where the Moselle and Rhine meet, the show continues under the motto “Life with
the river”. Blue and white blossoms in fluctuating bands symbolise the confluentia
of the Moselle and Rhine, and exhibitions round out the theme. For children, the
element water in the water discovery playground can be experienced up close.

Finally, you will obviously experience “Garden art: a castle in flux” at Kurfürstliches
Schloss (Electoral palace). A highlight for people interested in horticulture is
certainly the historical, but also modernly interpreted Lenne Garden with roses,
shrubs and woody plants, which will be opened in its new arrangement for
the first time (for both Koblenz locals and visitors) and create new direct connec-
tions to the bank of the Rhine. In April/May, the roughly 2,600 m2 rhododendron
grove and its accompanying plants will certainly be a spectacular attraction
for the 2011 BUGA.
Events, Art & Culture

An abundance of options: the 2011 Federal Horticultural Show in Koblenz will

enthral visitors with its summer-long festival of roughly 3,000 small and large
events. Experience a broad range of readings about sport and dance, all the
way to concerts with different kinds of music. Here, there is something that
suits everyone's taste. Whether it is a light festival, picnic concert or jazz per-
formance – the events are part of the BUGA supplementary programme and
are therefore usually included in the admission price.

All BUGA areas also have a series of places that are designed for the large range
of planned events. Each main area contains a stage and numerous per-
formance areas on the grounds. The possibilities range from intimate gardens
where a violinist plays to secretive sound gardens and the large covered
Sparkasse stage.

Not only are diverse events taking place on the BUGA grounds, but Koblenz is
also known for its events. International festivals such as the firework spectacle
“Rhine in flames”, the International juggler and small arts festival and the World
culture festival attract visitors from near and far every year.
Restaurants

Pure pleasure: besides being a feast for the eyes with its floral splendour, the
Federal Horticultural Show will also offer diverse culinary delights in different
restaurants that are spread across the entire grounds.

Our BUGA restaurants are located at historic sites, combining fine regional and
international dishes with a special atmosphere. The complete service offers
you relaxation and pure pleasure: in old walls, cosy vaulted ceilings or with
princely flair.

In the market restaurants you can serve yourself from a broad range of vege-
table counters, meat dishes and a cake buffet. Here you will quickly find fresh
dishes.

Furthermore, you will also be spoiled by the diverse options at many other
places. There are snack stands for a little reinforcement on the go, cafés with a
choice of cake and drinks, and beer gardens for sitting comfortably together
with an appetizing choice of dishes and drinks.
