Lesson 1
Solving Problems Involving Polynomial Functions

What’s In

An important aspects in problem solving is writing and solving a related

equation. The algebraic expressions learned and the operations related to them provide
a helpful tool in solving problems after relationships have been identified.

Example
1. The sum of two consecutive numbers, we can say that the first number is x , and for the
second number is x + 1. Since the two numbers are consecutive.
2. The area of a rectangle is 360 m 2, the length of its rectangle is 2 more than its width. What
is the equation of the rectangle in terms for its area?
Remember the formula for the area of the rectangle is A=l(w), since Area = 360 m 2 ,
width = w, since it is not stated for the value, and length is w + 2. So, by substituting we can
have an equation of 360 = w2 + 2w.

What’s New
Arrange the following steps in solving problems involving polynomial functions. Write the
number on the space provided.
________ A. Compute for the possible roots.
________ B. Give the final answer.
________ C. Draw the figure describing the problem
________ D. Find the polynomial equation
________ E. Identify and represent the given information
________ F. Represent what is being asked in the problem.

What Is It

How do we solve problems involving polynomial functions?

3
Let’s Remember

To solve problems involving polynomial functions, follow these steps:

1. Draw the figure describing the problem
2. Identify and represent the given information
3. Represent what is being asked in the problem
4. Find the polynomial equation using the result in step 3
5. Compute for the possible roots
6. Give the final answer

Example 1.

A square base wooden food tray with a volume of 450 cubic inches is to be constructed
from a square sheet of wood by cutting 2-inch squares from the corners and bending up the
sides. What must be the size of the sheet of wood to be used? Find the dimensions of the
wooden tray.

Steps Solution
1. Draw the indicated figure in the problem.

. 2 in.
2 in.

2. Identify and represent the given Let h = 2 inches be the height of the of the
information wooden food tray

l = the length and width of the square

sheet of wood

l - 2 = the length and width of the wooden

food tray

V = 450 cubic inches be the volume of the

wooden food tray

3. Represent the volume of the wooden tray. V= lwh

V(l) = lwh = (l-2)(l-2)(2)
V = (l2- 4l+4)(2)
V(l) = 2l2 - 8l + 8

4. Find the quadratic equations using the V(l) = 2l2 - 8l + 8

result in step 3 and the volume of the V(l) = 450
wooden tray. 2l2 - 8l + 8 = 450
l2 - 4l + 4 = 225
l2 - 4l -221 = 0

4
5. Determine the size of the wood and l2 - 4l -221 = 0
compute for the possible roots by factoring
(l - 17)( l +13) = 0

l - 17 = 0 l + 13 = 0
l = 17 (solution) l = - 13 (extraneous
solution)

Thus, the wood is 17 in. By 17 in.

6. Determine the dimensions of the wooden The height is 2 inches, the length is 15
tray. inches and the width is also 15 inches.

The size of the sheet of wood used is 17 inches by 17 inches. The wooden tray is 15
inches by 15 inches by 2 inches.

Example 2

The area of a right triangle is 240 cm 2. Find the lengths of the legs of the right
triangle if the length of one of the legs is 2 cm less than twice the length of the smaller leg.

Steps Solution
1. Draw the indicated figure in the problem.

2. Identify and represent the given Let x be the smaller leg

information. 2x - 2 be the length of the longer leg

3. Represent the area of the triangle. 1

A= (2)( 2x-2)
2

4. Find the quadratic equation using the 1

A = (2)( 2x-2)
result in step 3 and the area of the triangle. 2

1
A= (2)(x2 - x)
2

A = x2 - x
x2 - x = 240
x2 - x - 240 = 0

5. Compute for the possible roots by x2 - x - 240 = 0

factoring. (x-16)(x + 15) = 0
x - 16 = 0 x + 15 = 0
x = 16(solution) x = - 15(extraneous
solution)

5
6. Determine the dimensions of the triangle.
The smaller leg is 16 cm and the longer leg
is 2(16) - 2 = 30cm

The lengths of the legs of the right triangle are 16 cm and 13 cm.

What’s More

Solve the following problems as indicated.

1. Find two integers whose sum is 50 and whose difference is 26.

2. One side of a triangle is 2 decimeters more than the other side of and 4 decimeters less
than the hypotenuse. Find the lengths of the three sides.

3. The sum of two numbers is 12, if one number is four less than a number , what are the
two numbers?
