USE OF STEAM AND AIR CONSUMPTION CHARTS-cont.

Air Consumption Charts - Continuous Air Blowing - Receiver Size - cont»

Assume a system with these conditions:

Air Pressure - Air compressed to 500 psig and discharged to

a 300 psig receiver. Header pressure, 290
psig. (10 psi ^ P for PRV.)
Atmospheric Pressure 14.7 psia

Blowing Time, one complete cycle 8 hours

10 - Retractables, 30 ft. travel. 2 - 3/4 inch venturi nozzles.

Blowing pressure, 150 psig.

Retractables

1. Rate of Discharge for effective area of 0.75 sq. in. = 36 cu. ft,
free air per second. 36 x 60 = 2,160 scfm.

2. Blowing Travel = 60 ft. - 4 ft. (head opening and closing time) =

56 ft.

3. Retractable Discharge = 56 ft. x 2,160 x 10 units =

6.5 fpm
186,092 cu. ft. free air.

Compressor Size

Compressor Size = 186,092 = 186,092 = 388 cfm.

8 X 60 480
For compressor efficiency of 65%, the compressor requires a minimum
displacement of 388 = 596 cfm

1. Select the proper number of nozzles on the ordinate scale of page 6.

Read horizontally to the proper nozzle size, then vertically to
"Effective Area" on the abscissa scale. This is the total throat
area multiplied by the proper discharge coefficient.

2. Locate the "effective Area" determined in Step 1 on the abscissa

of page 7. Read vertically to the proper blowing pressure, then
horizontally to "Rate of Discharge."

Air Consumption Charts - Continuous Air Blowing - Retractables

1. Select the proper nozzle and "Effective Area" from Page 7. Locate
this on the abscissa. Read vertically to the proper blowing pressure
and horizontally to "Rate of Discharge."

2. Select the proper value for retractable travel. Blowing travel is total
for one cycle - both extending and retracting.

3. Divide blowing travel by traverse speed and multiply result by "Rate

of Discharge" from Step 1.

Air Consumption Charts - Continuous Air Blowing - Compressor Size

1. Compressor Size is computed from formula No. 1. Assume a compressor

efficiency of 65% and select the next larger standard size.

Air Consumption Charts - Continuous Air Blowing - Receiver Size

1. Air storage required is the maximum total discharge from the largest
user during one blowing cycle, minus the air delivered by the compressor
during this cycle.

Receiver Size = (Atmos. press., psia) x (Largest Air

storage required for any unit, cu. ft.
of free air)
(Receiver pressure, psig, before blowing,
minus receiver pressure, psig, after
blowing) =AP.

Steam Consumption Charts

1. Select the proper number of nozzles on the ordinate scale of page 6.

Read across horizontally to the proper nozzle size, then down verti
cally to "Effective Area" on the abscissa scale. This is the total
throat area multiplied by the correct discharge coefficient.

2. Locate the "Effective Area" determined in Step 1 on the abscissa of

page 8. Read vertically to the proper blowing pressure, then hori
zontally to "Rate of Discharge."

3. Multiply the rate of discharge in pounds per second found in Step 2

by the blowing time in seconds.

4. After selecting the proper nozzle for retractables, locate the

"Effective Ar*ea" on the abscissa of Page 8. Read vertically
to. the proper blowing oressure.and horizontally to "Rate of
Discharge."

For example, assume a system with these conditions:

Steam Pressure 600 psig, saturated

4 - Rotary Units, 180° sweep. 20 - 5/16 inch venturi nozzles in each.

Blowing pressure, 125 psig.

2 - Retractables, 10 ft. travel. 2-3/4 inch venturi nozzles. Blowing

pressure, 200 psig.

Rotary Units

1. Effective Area, each element = 1.35 sq. in. (Step 1 above)

2. Rate of Discharge = 2.6 lb. per sec. = 2.6 x 60 x 60 = 9,360 lb.

saturated steam per hour. (Step 2 above).
Retractables

3. Rate of Discharge for Effective Area of 0.75 sq. in = 2.5 lb.

saturated steam per second = 2.5 x 60 x 60 = 9,000 lb. saturated
steam per hour. (Step 2 above).

Section VI

USE OF STEAM AND AIR CONSUMPTION CHARTS-cont.

Continuous Air Blowing

(Reciprocating Compressor)

For continuous blowing, air is usually compressed from 350 to 500 psig and
stored in a receiver. The pressure is then reduced to a lower pressure,
usually 300 psig, to give a constant 300 psig header pressure.

COMPRESSOR SIZE is determined by first computing the total amount of air

needed, then following this formula:

Formula No. 1:

Compressor Size = Total amount of air required,

cu. ft. free air = scfm
Time to blow the boiler, minutes

Assume a compressor efficiency of 65% and select the next largest standard
size.

RECEIVER SIZE is computed on the basis of the greatest amount of air used
by any one unit for a complete blowing cycle as follows (air quantities in
cubic feet of free air):

Formula No. 2:

Receiver Size, cu. ft. = (Atmos. press., psia) x (Max. amount

of air used by largest user in one
cycle, minus air delivered by com-
pressor during that cycle)
Receiver pressure, psig, before blowing,
minus receiver pressure, psig, after
blowing = A P

Receiver pressure must not be allowed to fall below the desired header
pressure plus the minimum drop through the pressure reducing valve.
For a typical example of continuous blowing, see page 5.

Section VI
USE OF STEAM AND AIR CONSUMPTION CHARTS

Discharge of steam or air from a soot blower depends on these factors:

1. Shape of nozzles (nozzle design)

2. Size of nozzles
3. Number of nozzles
4. Blowing pressure
5. Blowing temperature
6. Blowing time

NOZZLE DESIGN depends on the location of the nozzle relative to tube surfaces,
the type of surface that must be cleaned, fuel characteristic (abrasive or non-
abrasive), nature of deposits (liquid, tacky, dry, etc.)-
Venturi nozzles are used when the velocity of the medium must be high. When
the ash is abrasive and the mass blowing effect is necessary, straight-bore
nozzles are used. For either steam or air blowing, the nozzle discharge co
efficient is:

Venturi nozzles 0.85

Straight-bore nozzles 0.63

NOZZLE SIZE is selected to give the best possible cleaning with lowest possible
discharge and the least danger of tube cutting. In general, blowing pressures
range as follows:

Normal Difficult
Pressure Cleaning
PSI6 PSI6
Rotary Elements 100-125 Up to 300
Retractable Units 100 - 250 Up to 300
These are pressures at the soot blower head downstream of the valve seat.

BLOWING TEMPERATURE for steam blowing with all factors equal, the steam con
sumption decreases as superheat is raised.

BLOWING TIME for rotary elements depends on the sweep or blowing arc. Rotating
speed of rotary elements is 2 RPM.

Blowing time for retractables depends on the travel and traversing speed.
Traversing and rotating speeds are easily altered by changing sprockets to
give traveling speeds from about 4 FPM to about 10 FPM.

MODEL ECS (ELECTRIC CASCADE SEQUENTIAL) CONTROL PANEL

The Model ECS Panel may be used for the control of electric motor operated

soot blowers on fired heaters. The panel controls blower operation in an

automatic fixed sequence. Individual blowers can be taken out of automatic

sequence by means of unit selector switches. Blowers selected out are then

skipped over during sequential operation. Blowers may also be selected to blow

on an individual basis. Sequencing is accomplished by means of an additional

sequencing limit switch, facotry installed on each blower.

Normally, the ECS Panel is used for control of up to twenty (20)blowers; how
ever, additional positions can be added and composite panels are available for

the control of blowers on more than one (1) heater.

The Model ECS Panel consists of an open plate board approximately 16" high X 20"

wide containing a selector switch and program light for each blower, a master

start push button, blowing medium valve selector switch, sequence finish light,

reset button and an emergency retract button. All components are wired to a

terminal strip for customer's connection.

In addition, the following options may be included at an extra:

A. "Low header pressure switch and light"

B. "Steam warm-up time delay consisting of a timer, solenoid valve and

miscellaneous hardware"

C. "NEMA IV lights and switches"

D. "Enclosures meeting NEMA I, III, IIIR, IV, IV-X, XII and VII"

E. "Plexiglass door over face of panel"

F. Air Purge connector"

DESCRIPTION

The Model T-20E Long Retractable Soot Blower is designed for use in the

fired heater where maximum lance travel will not exceed 20'-0". It is comprised

of a formed steel housing covering the top and sides, one (1) 0.6 H.P. TENV
electric motor, a 2-3/8" O.D. carbon steel lance for up to 15' travel or an

alloy lance for travel from 15' to 20', a stainless steel feed tube, automatic

blowing medium control valve with external pressure control, limit siwtches and

a NEMA IV terminal strip junction box. Included are a wall box or adapter and

an ANSI Standard companion flange, gasket, studs and nuts for the blowing medium

control valve.

Normal speed is 6.5 FPM traversing and 6.5 RPM rotating.

The T-20 E may be used as a half tract, which is a blower with lance exten

sion designed to clean double its length of travel. The half tract may be used

where gas temperature does not exceed 1000°F.

The T-20E is complete with wiring from limit switches and motor terminating

D-5E ELECTRIC OPERATED ROTARY BLOWER

DESCRIPTION

The Model D-5E Rotary Type Blower is designed to clean convection surfaces

of the fired heater where temperatures do not exceed 1800°F. Element lengths
are limited to 20'-0" for fired heater applications.

The D-5E is complete with a wall sleeve or adapter, a head of ductile iron

or cast steel construction with external pressure adjusting device, companion

flange with gasket, studs and nuts, a TENV 1/8 H.P. electric motor, limit switch

in a NEMA IV switch box, element support bearings and a multi-nozzle blowing

element of appropriate material. Rotating speed is 1.5 RPM.

A standard D-5E is complete with wiring from the motor and limit switch to

a terminal block in the NEMA IV integral switch box. Also available, is an

integral cabinet of NEMA IV construction containing the motor starter. With this

arrangement, the motor starter, limit switch and starter are wired to a disconnect

type terminal block in the starter cabinet. A plug type disconnect is also avail

able along with other options.

By adding a limit switch, the D-5E becomes a D-5ES Sequential Head, which

enables it to automatically start the next blower in sequence. With this arrange

ment, the first blower is started manually or by a timer, with each blower receiving

its start impulse from the preceeding blower and with the last blower shutting the

system off upon completion of blowing.

For a pressurized heater condition, a stuffing box assembly is required for

the wall sleeve and a forced pressure air valve for the soot blower head.

D-5A AIR OPERATED ROTARY BLOWER

DESCRIPTION

The D-5A Rotary Type Blower is designed to clean convection surfaces of the

fired heater when temperatures do not exceed 1800°F. Element lengths are limited
to 20'-0" for fired heater applications.

The D-5A is complete with a wall sleeve or adapter, a head of ductile iron

or cast steel construction with external pressure adjusting device, companion

flange with gasket, studs and nuts, a vane type air motor, element support bearings

and a multi-nozzle blowing element of appropriate material.

Power air at 40 scfm and 80 psig is required to drive the air motor so as

to produce a rotating speed of 2 RPM.

By adding a pilot valve assembly, the D-5A becomes a D-5AS Sequential Head,

which enables it to automatically start the next blower in sequence. With this

arrangement, the first blower is started manually by a push button with all blowers

receiving their start impulse from the preceeding blower. When the last blower

in sequence has operated, the system is shut off automatically.

For a pressurized heater condition, a stuffing box assembly is required for

the wall sleeve and a forced pressure air valve for the soot blower head.

BLOWING PRESSURE

Blowing pressures recommended for both retractables (T-20 and T-30) and
Rotaries (D-5) are found on Tables # 5, 6, &7. These pressures will be
suitable for the Retractable and Rotary cleaning effectiveness required
if selected in accordance with the recommendations with regard to fuel
type, gas temperature, and tube arrangements outlined in this standard.

SOOTBLOWER CLEANING RANGES

Tables 1, 2, and 3 outline the sootblower cleaning ranges in accordance

to type and arrangement of tube surfaces, fuel fouling characteristics,
nozzle requirements and type of sootblower. These cleaning ranges are
based on normal cleaning requirements at recommended blowing pressures
shown on the Blowing Pressure Chart and explained above.

TYPICAL SOOTBLOWER ARRANGEMENTS

Most fired heaters are longer than wide with the tubes running the length
of the unit.

Bare tubes should be cleaned with the sootblower element axis perpendicular
to the tube axis.

Extended surface tubes can be cleaned using either a perpendicular or a

longitudinal arrangement: favoring perpendicular arrangements with square
pitched finned tubes and longitudinal arrangements with triangular^ pitched
finned tubes.

Other factors such as outside clearances, accessibility, heater return bend

design, and total costs (including both sootblower and installation costs)
must be evaluated before final selections can be made.

Typical sootblower arrangements and spacing are illustrated on Figures 1,

2 and 3.

Section I
FUEL OIL INHIBITORS (ADDITIVES)

It is extremely difficult to decide which inhibitor or which type inhibi

tor is the most effective and economical. There are a large number on the
market, and in many plants inhibitors have prevented or retarded boiler op
erating problems, while in other plants they have completely failed and
sometimes actually aggravated the condition.

Maximum benefits of a combustion catalyst can only be obtained by its con

tinued presence in the proper proportions.

Oxides of calcium, magnesium, aluminum and silica increase the melting point
of the ash so that it becomes more friable, flaky and porous. This results
in a desposit that can be readily removed by sootblowing.

Fly ash formed in the presence of metallic oxides becomes much more vol
uminous. This bulky type of fly ash increases the tendency to bridge or
plug tube lanes.

Proper selection, effective use and location of sootblowers plays a vital

role in removing these fireside deposits.

BLOWING MEDIUM SOURCE PRESSURE

Sufficient blowing pressure must be available to successfully use Rotary

type sootblowers. Depending on the element length, hence the number of
nozzles, the potential energy available in the form of pressure is divided
between all the nozzles being supplied. Comparing this to the Retractable
design where normally only two (2) nozzles are used, it can be readily
seen that in terms of energy out-put per nozzle the Retractable blower is
far superior. In addition, the helical cleaning path transcribed by the
Retractable nozzles when compared to the fixed rotation of the Rotary
blower makes the Retractable blower the more effective cleaner. When suf
ficient source pressure is not available for the Rotary then it will be
necessary to use the retractable sootblower regardless of gas temperature.

TUBE ARRANGEMENT AND HEATER SIZE

On the smaller heaters, when the number of tubes are few, successful
utilization of Rotary blowers can be achieved. When the number of nozzles
on the Rotary blowers can be kept low, larger nozzles approaching the
Retractable nozzle size can be used, and if a suitable source pressure and
quantity is available, then cleaning effectiveness can be maintained.
Determining the proper balance between number of nozzles, source pressure,
fuel fouling characteristics, gas temperature, geometry of the heater, and
of course, economic considerations is the exercise that makes the proper
selection of sootblowers for the fired heater the complex problem it is.

The charts and tables included in this standard and described below have been
prepared to aid the reader in making these selections. Any unusual applica
tions or deviations from these standards should be referred to Copes-Vulcan
Inc., Lake City, Pennsylvania 16423.

Section I

Page2 of 12
CLEANING THE FIRED OIL HEATER

FUEL OILS

on - ash corrosion becomes more severe with increased temperatures and

the nature of the corrosive agent. Above 1300°F where V2OC or other
mixtures sinter and melt, corrosion is intensified. The significant part
that sodium plays in forming low melting complex compounds indicates that
not only vanadium, but also sodium is highly undesirable in residual fuel
oil as it affects fire side deposits.

SOOTBLQWER RECOMMENDATIONS

Under normal operating conditions, we recommend sootblower selection as

follows:

A. Below 100 PPM vanadium or 25 PPM sodium or 2%

sulphur in the fuel oil:

Rotary sootblower to 1800°F gas temperature.

Retractable sootblower above 1800°F.

B. 100 to 200 PPM vanadium or 25 PPM sodium or

2% sulphur:

Rotary sootblower to 1300°F gas temperature.

Retractable sootblower above 1300°F.

C. Above 200 PPM vanadium or contents in excess of

25 PPM sodium or 2% sulphur:

Rotary sootblower to 1050®F gas temperature.

Retractable sootblower above 1050OF.

Under control conditions other factors may be used to modify sootblower

selection.

AIR/FUEL RATIO

Down to a ratio of 20/1 the corrosion rate is not much affected at constant
temperature.

Below this point corrosion rates will be reduced even to a low figure at
the theoretically correct ratio.

The lower corrosion at the lower ratios is explained by formation of V2O3 or

V2O4 rather than V2O5. These lower oxides of vanadium have higher melting
points than V2O5 and tend to be carried through the system as harmless dust.

HEATER SCHEMATIC
PREFACE - cont.

Of course, manual, air, or electric operation is available as well as

several types of automatic sequential controls.

Bulletins describing the finer points of the air and electric operated

rotaries and retractables are available for your reference. Typical speci

fications and overall dimensional drawings are included. These soot blowers

are designed to meet the oil fired heater's requirements.

Although the actual number, type and location of soot blowers must be

selected for each specific application, typical standards outlining soot blower

locations, cleaning radii and blowing pressures, both for rotaries and retrac

tables to be used as a selection guide have been developed and are included.

Some typical installation drawings of Copes-Vulcan equipment on fired

heaters are included to illustrate how the soot blowers are actually applied.

For your information we have included a partial list of Copes-Vulcan

installations in the oil refineries.

We have also prepared a data sheet (Form 8061156) so that requests for
quotations are facilitated and become less time consuming. A supply of these

data sheets is available upon request. "We invite your inquiry".

Finally, we have also included a section on nozzle sizing, air and steam

consumption, and the use of steam and air consumption charts.

n
PREFACE

Cleaning fired oil heaters is a specialty at Copes-Vulcan. Engineering

care and caution based on years of experience is the formula used in both

unit selection and location.

Copes-Vulcan soot blowers are designed with the customer in mind. That

is, we have designed our equipment to operate under adverse conditions with

the minimum amount of both maintenance and down time.

The rugged construction (designed especially for outdoor operation) of

both the D-5 (rotary), T-20 and T-30 (retractables) make them working
companions to the fired oil heaters.

The D-5 (rotary) with its specially engineered head with outside pressure

adjustment and fidld adjustable sweep make it ideal for any changes that

might have to be made due to changing operating conditions.

Its "Sombrero" type valve, a special design feature as shown in Item #4,

Page 3, Bulletin #1102; assures a tight shut-off and prevents condensate

leakage into the heater.

The rotary element with special alloy materials and large nozzles is

designed for long life with continued effective cleaning.

The T-30 and T-20 long retractables, like the D-5, have ANSI rated head

flanges with outside pressure adjustment and the "Sombrero" valve to assure

a tight shut-off.

The retracts use an enclosed "box type" housing and sealed gear boxes to

protect all moving parts from the elements.

The T-30 MKI-E with its "TWO MOTOR" drive keeps rotation absolutely in

dependent of traversing to insure the optimum in cleaning (particularly on

finned tubes) with less tube erosion.
