Personal Reflection
(Week 8)

This course was full of assignments that helped me reflect on the readings

and actively use the information to create a thoughtful project. The first project we

did was one of my favorites. I liked creating a program model infographic for

parents. Last week, I started a new school year and in the parent packet I included

an informative flyer to explain our school’s curriculum and how we

include/integrate it with our EL program. I also included a language acquisition

flyer as well. This year I have 14 ELL students, so I think this information is

important to provide to all of my parents.

Moving forward, I also take with me the strategies I learned for writing with

ELLs. I started a new school year with 5th graders, and I had them write down their

goals for the year. Almost all my students wrote down that they would like to

improve their writing. This seems to be a similar goal for many students as they

enter back into in-person learning. When designing my classroom, I created

multiple learning stations, so students have an area to write and give thoughtful

feedback. I also provided journals for students with a monthly writing menu. This

menu has prompts that have students reflect on prior knowledge. This helps

students activate their prior knowledge and encourage them to write.

Overall, there are many things from this course that I have already added to

my new school year. I am excited to try out more of the practices as the year goes

on. During my benchmark assessments I have already seen a gap in the reading

levels between ELL and English proficient students. I hope to bridge this gap by

continuing the practices I learned. I will continue to monitor students and create

thorough lessons that help scaffold students to higher levels of achievement.
