STUDENTS PERCEPTION AND FACTOR EFFECTION ON ONLINE ENGLISH LEARNING DURING

COVID-19 PANDEMIC ERA

1.1. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

lately many countries around the world have been shocked by the outbreak of the
corona virus or commonly called (Covid-19), this virus was first discovered in China, more
precisely in the wuhan area at the beginning of 2020 the world was excited by the spread of
this virus which was so quickly and made the whole world, including Indonesia feel the impact
of this virus, even this virus was able to make the whole world feel very afraid of the spread of
this very deadly virus. Due to the spread of this virus, several industries experienced a crisis.
Not only the economic sector is affected, but also the education sector. Most governments
around the world have closed educational institutions to avoid Covid-19 infection.

This was acknowledged by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural
Organization (UNESCO) on Thursday (5/3), that the Corona virus outbreak had an impact on the
education sector. In December 2020, the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Indonesia
had reached more than 91,602 cases (Kompas, 2020). The Ministry of Education of the Republic
of Indonesia has launched a plan that aims to dismantle educational institutions and replace the
teaching-learning process (KBM) with an online system, Online teaching is the choice of many
countries throughout Indonesia, especially in Bengkulu, both at the elementary and university
levels, Global spread of the COVID pandemic -19 triggered class suspensions resulting in the
need for online learning (Moorhouse, 2020). (Setyorini, 2020) stated that various policies have
been issued by the Indonesian government to suppress the spread of the corona virus by
imposing social distancing, physical distancing in several areas. The policies issued to limit the
spread of COVID-19 have had an impact on various fields throughout the world, especially
education in Indonesia.

In the circular letter of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of
Indonesia Number 4 of 2020 concerning the Implementation of the Corona Virus Disease
(Covid-19) Emergency Education Policy point 2a it is stated that the learning process from home
through online learning / distance learning is carried out to provide a meaningful experience for
students Kemendikbud RI Education and Training Center, (2020). Nadiem Makarim, Minister of
Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, also suggested that teachers use various e-
learning platforms, such as Learning House, WhatsApp, Quipper School, Teacher's Room,
Google Meet, Google Classroom, Zoom, and so on. .2019; Putsanra, 2020; Anggitasari, et al.
2020; Syahrial & Syafryadin, 2020). And almost at all levels of education, changes to the face-to-
face experience are applied from the teaching and learning process that is carried out through
online learning. This learning practice is called PJJ (Distance Education) in schools, while in
universities it is called e-learning or online learning.

In terms of analyzing perception, it is important to define this term first. Perceptions are
objects, events, and relationship experiences that are obtained by continuing and interpreting
message knowledge. In transmitting information and predicting messages, providing
understanding of the stimulus-response that includes focus, hope, motivation, and memory.
Michotte (2019) & Septinawati, et al. (2020) then define perception as a step of a total action
process that helps us to adapt our behavior to the environment in which we live. Martono
(2010) also states that perception is a perspective on a problem that occurs or a certain point.
point of view used to view a phenomenon. Therefore, in this study, student experience focuses
on student participation, language difficulty level, internet problems, and also online learning
platforms that suit their needs and conditions.

And distance learning is a solution to overcome difficulties in implementing face-to-face

learning, This is a challenge for all elements and levels of education to keep the class active
even though the school is closed. Interest and motivation to learn students are needed to
achieve learning objectives because it is a factor that affects success in learning. According to
Djalil, (2013) said that the factors that influence student learning are internal and external
factors. factors such as health, intelligence, interests, motivation, and learning methods, while
external factors such as family, school, community, and also the environment.

There are factors that affect student learning: The first factor is the low motivation to
learn, giving motivation means an effort to provide situations and conditions, so that children
want to do it. Children with high intelligence, may fail in lessons due to lack of motivation. The
best results are achieved with strong motivation. NS failed children are not to blame. Maybe
the teacher has not succeeded in generating motivation for student activities, S. Nasution,
(2000). Therefore, students will be motivated in learning if the environment can provide a
stimulus, so students are interested in learning. Understanding and utilization of the classroom
atmosphere by students is expected to support success in learning. Elida Prayino, (1989). In this
case, it is clear that learning also greatly affects students' learning motivation; and the role of
the teacher is very important to arouse and motivate students. Thus, there are differences in
the learning system in schools that turn into a family environment
