We divide the system into 3 main parts.

1.    The Seawater System.


Merchant Navy Aspirants
2.    The High-Temperature (HT) Freshwater System.
IMU CET 2020
3.    The Low-Temperature (LT) Freshwater System.

Let us understand each of the systems one by one.

1. The Seawater System


The seawater pump takes suction from a high or low sea chest via a sea suction strainer and a
set of valves.

The seawater pump is a dual-speed centrifugal pump i.e. they can run on both high and low
speed. The characteristics of the pumps are utilize during the manoeuvring and in the cold
areas.

The seawater pumps are two in number. The failure of one pump will not affect the seawater
circulation. The outlet valve of the pump is a non-return valve.

The seawater is circulating through two central coolers and one-cylinder cooler having the same
discharge overboard.

Seawater goes into the central coolers from the bottom and comes out from the top.

2. High-Temperature (HT) Freshwater System


High-temperature freshwater is circulating through the main engine (The freshwater cools the
jackets of the cylinder liner, cylinder head, exhaust valve, and turbocharger casing) by the
freshwater pump.

The temperature of the freshwater raises after absorbing the heat from the main engine.

The freshwater after coming out from the main engine passes through the de-aeration
chamber where the water and vapours in the system are separating and then vapours are
venting to the expansion tank.

The high-temperature water, if required can be used as a heating medium for the evaporator of
the freshwater generator.

This high-temperature water is then cooled in the cylinder cooler with the help of the seawater.

There is a 3-way valve at the outlet of the cylinder cooler, this valve is use to regulate the
temperature of the freshwater in this system.

If the temperature of the freshwater goes high then the 3-way valve will operate and the
maximum amount of water passes through the cylinder cooler.

There is a makeup line provided by the expansion tank. It supply the water in case of any loss of
the water in the system.

The temperature of the freshwater in this system is maintaining at about 65-70oC. It raises up to
83oC after passing through the main engine.

3. Low-Temperature (HT) Freshwater System


Low-temperature freshwater is circulating through the main engine air cooler, main engine lube
oil cooler, freshwater generator condenser, and various auxiliaries.

The freshwater is distributed to the various heat exchangers as mentioned above through the
pump.

The freshwater after coming out of the heat exchangers is cooled in the central cooler by the
seawater.

There is a 3-way valve at the outlet of the central cooler. The valve is use to regulate the
temperature of the freshwater in the system.

If the temperature of the water is less, the 3-way will operate and the maximum amount of
water will be bypassed from the central cooler.

The temperature of the freshwater in this system is maintaining at about 35oC. It raises up to
45oC after passing through the various heat exchangers.

What Is The Significance of The


Regulating Valve In The Central Cooler
System?
 The regulating valve is Normally in close position.

If there is a loss of freshwater in the Low-temperature freshwater system then water is


compensated by the freshwater expansion tank via regulating valve.

Chemical dozing in the low-temperature water system is also done by the freshwater expansion
tank via the regulating valve.

A temperature sensor provides the signal to the control unit which operates the regulating
valve to maintain the desired temperature setting of the low-temperature freshwater system.
