ONE SUICIDE PER HOUR
According to the WHO report, people often commit suicide between the ages of 15 and 44. However, experts
are concerned that the number of suicides has increased by 60 percent worldwide over the past 45 years
and the number of suicides may increase over the years.

So, for example, according to the International Health Organization, in 2000 about one million people died
of suicide, and by 2020 the number of suicides may increase by one and a half times.

According to this organization, if about a million people commit suicide a year, then eight thousand of
them are Kazakhstanis. If there is one suicide every 40 seconds all over the world, then almost every hour
in Kazakhstan someone voluntarily takes their own life.

Official statistics on the number of suicides in Kazakhstan have not been announced. According to the
International Health Organization, 3,919 people died as a result of suicide in Kazakhstan in 2005, 3,283 of
them were men.
THERE ARE MORE FEMALE SUICIDES IN
KAZAKHSTAN THAN IN THE USA
Psychologists believe that if a man is determined to commit suicide, then basically he
brings the matter to an end. Women in most cases are not going to kill themselves, they
only use suicide attempts to blackmail or attract attention to themselves. Therefore,
according to statistics, for one case of male suicide, there are five female suicide attempts.

The president of the Association of Psychoanalysts of Kazakhstan Anna Kudiyarova, in an

interview with a reporter of our radio Azattyk, says that in most cases men kill themselves
by hanging.
SUICIDES DUE TO LOANS
The reasons for suicide can be different. However, now there are widely known cases in Kazakhstan when people
decide to commit suicide for political and economic reasons. It is generally believed that the number of suicides
increases during the crisis period. Similarly, during the financial crisis in Kazakhstan, so-called suicides for
economic reasons were observed in the country, when people, unable to repay the interest of the loan received, went
to extreme measures, committing suicide.

As shown in the schedule of the International Health Organization, Kazakhstan, among other Central Asian
republics, is the country with the highest suicide rates. For example, in 2005 in neighboring Kyrgyzstan the number
of suicides was only 470 people, in 2003 in Uzbekistan - 1,417 thousand people.
CHILD SUICIDE
Commenting on the topic of child suicide, Raisa Kolokina, a specialist at the Center for Healthy Lifestyle
Formation, tells our radio Azattyk that today child suicide in Kazakhstan is an alarming phenomenon.

She believes that the reasons for the increase in the number of child and youth suicide in Kazakhstan are
mainly loneliness, alienation. According to her, the lack of free children's and youth sections leads to a
narrowing of the circle of communication of teenagers.

The average age of young people committing suicide is from 14 to 17 years. Experts of the International Health
Organization say that the critical threshold of suicide is considered to be indicators of more than 20 people

per 100 thousand population.
