Reordering Supplies
The heart of the system is a patented, rugged interferometer, field-proven to be used also in
challenging environments. The internal components are mounted on anti-vibration platforms
and the truly portable aluminum instrument housing allow for field tests to deliver results
known from laboratory bench-top spectrometers directly at the point of sale.
ERASPEC measures the mid-infrared spectrum of the sample and directly derives the
concertation of fuel components, such as ethanol, MTBE or benzene, from this spectrum.
Knowing the exact fuel composition allows ERASPEC to use a chemometric model to predict
complex properties, like octane number or distillation properties. Additionally, ERASPEC
compares the chemical finger print of the sample with known reference fuels for even more
precise results and improved fuel quality control.
Separate measurements cells are used for the analysis of gasoline, as well as Diesel and jet
fuel. An additional reference cell allows a reagent free reference measurement. For special
applications a fourth cell can be added to the instrument, making it the most versatile fuel
spectrometer on the market.
Ensure that the vent holes of the analyzer are not obstructed. The analyzer requires an
environment with ambient room temperature in the range of 5°C to 45°C and max. 90%
relative humidity (non-condensing).
Before making any connections, make sure that the power cable at the back of the
analyzer is not plugged into an electrical outlet.
Only one set-up utility is required: an A.C. electrical outlet (85-264 V AC, 47-63 Hz, 70 W).
It is recommended that the analyzer is plugged into its own circuit to avoid power line
interference and voltage surges or drops, which may occur if the circuit is shared with
devices with high electrical draw.
For protection against scratches and spills, it is recommended that the screen protection film
be placed on the touch screen monitor prior to first use. (For reorder, please contact your
local distributor or eralytics GmbH).
Typical limits for a new analyzer can be found at the beginning of this manual.

The ERASPEC Gasoline module follows in each detail the requirements of the latest
American and European standards like ASTM D 5845 and ASTM D 6277. It can report the
below mentioned parameters.
NOTE 1: The range and repeatability for calculated parameters (RON, MON, AKI, distillation
parameters, DVPE) depend on the database used.
NOTE 2: The quoted repeatabilities are measured with one scan per measurement. The
repeatability can be improved by averaging 2 or more scans per measurement.
The ERASPEC Diesel module follows in each detail the requirements of the latest American
standard ASTM D7806. It reports the below mentioned parameters.
NOTE 1: The range and repeatability for calculated parameters (Cetane number, Cetane
index, distillation parameters) depend on the database used.
NOTE 2: The quoted repeatabilities are measured with one scan per measurement. The
repeatability can be improved by averaging 2 or more scans per measurement.
The ERASPEC diesel module can determine cetane improver (like 2-EHN) within the limits
and precision mentioned in section 5.2. The 2-EHN module allows a second measurement
using a different cell to increase the precision and lower the limit of detection to the following
values.
For results within the lower measurement range the instrument will report the result from the
measurement through the 400µm cell. If the result is above this range the instrument will
report the result measured through the 100µm cell.
The ERASPEC Jet Fuel module report the below mentioned parameters.
Calculated Properties:
• Total Aromatics
• Freezing Point
• Flash Point
• Smoke Point
• Viscosity (20°C, -20°C)
• Distillation points (IBP, T10, T50, T85, T90, T 95, FBP)
Contamination:
While ERASPEC will determine the Benzene content with the standard gasoline module, it’s
also possible to determine Benzene in gasoline using the European standard EN 238.
In this method, it is required to dilute the gasoline with cyclohexane in a ratio 1:25, 1:50, or
1:100, depending on the (expected) benzene concentration in the sample. The spectrum of
this diluted sample is then measured. As reference spectrum, a spectrum of pure
cyclohexane is used.
For details according sample preparation and measurement details to EN 238 see section
6.3.
While ERASPEC will determine the FAME content with the standard Diesel module
(according to ASTM D7806), it’s also possible to determine FAME in Diesel using the
European standard EN 14078.
In this method, it is required to dilute the sample with a FAME free middle distillate. For
reference measurement, a spectrum of the same FAME free midddle destillate is used.
For details according sample preparation and measurement details to EN 14078 see section
6.4.
The Fuel Ethanol module allows to determine Ethanol (up to 100 Vol%), Methanol (0.3 –
15 Vol%), Water (0.2 – 2.0 Vol%) and denaturants.
The Synthetic Fuel module was developed upon request by a customer. It uses peak areas
in the IR spectrum that are shown by this special type of fuel.
The instrument starts with a measurement through the 100µm cell and checks if all peaks are
below a certain limit. If this is the case the instrument will calculate the available properties. If
not, a second measurement through the 20µm cell is performed. Peaks with a too high signal
using the 100µm cell will be calculated using the 20µm cell and the results corrected by a
factor compensating the path length difference to ensure consistent result
The synthetic fuel module can currently predict the following properties:
• Aromatics concentration
• Flash point
• Freezing point
• Smoke point
• Viscosity (at -20°C)
• Distillation properties (IBP, T10, T50, T90, FBP)
This module will automatically determine if a sample is a gasoline or Diesel during the
measurement. The measurement cell will be selected according to this pre-evaluation and
the results will be calculated accordingly. The calculation will consider all settings (incl.
libraries) the from the gasoline or Diesel method, as if the corresponding method would have
been selected manually.
Depending on the activated user level, not all fields might be adjustable. See section
8.1.1 for details on available user levels.
In this way, any influence on the spectrum that are not due to the sample (like lines from
water vapor and carbon dioxide or the influence of the wavelength dependence of the
emission of the IR source) is removed and only the “pure” absorption spectrum of the sample
is obtained. This final spectrum is further analyzed to determine concentrations and calculate
properties.
For standard measurements, the reference spectrum is determined automatically without the
need for a reference material:
• After the instrument is switched on and the latest reference found in the
memory is older than 1 hour
• During normal operation, when the latest reference is older than 1 hour
• During normal operation, when the temperature of the spectrometer has
changed by 1°C (1.8°F) since the last measurement of a reference spectrum.
That means that from time to time the ERASPEC starts a reference measurement
automatically, not only directly after switching on the instrument, but also during normal
operation. Please wait until the reference determination is finished (it will take only about 60
seconds) before you perform further measurements of samples.
Date and time of the current reference spectrum is shown in the “Reference” section in the
“Measure” menu. To start a reference measurement manually press the button
“REFERENCE”.
• EN 238 Cyclohexane
• Gasoline
• Diesel (with and without 2-EHN module)
• Jet Fuel
• Synthetic Fuel
The following sections will cover the differences for special methods (e.g. EN 238, EN 14078,
Auto detect) or the measurement with an optional auto-sampler.
For the sake of simplicity below screenshots show only the steps during a gasoline
measurement.
“Method” Select the desired measurement module (in the above example
“Gasoline”). Depending on instrument configuration multiple modules can
be available.
“Reference” Date & time of the last reference measurement for this method.
A reference measurement if performed by the instrument automatically if
required. To record a new reference spectrum manually, press the button
“REFERENCE”.
Reference measurements for standard measurements do not need any
reference material.
“Libraries” Predefined (and customizable) “Library sets” can be selected from the
drop-down menu. The “EDIT” button will open the “Library Editor”. See
section 6.5 for details on how to create, expand and modify libraries and
library sets.
“Options” Access the “Measure › Options” menu. See section 6.6 for details.
“RINSE” Pressing the “RINSE” button will activate a rinsing cycle which will need
approx. 10ml. The volume can be modified in the “Settings” menu. Rinsing
can be performed with air, a solvent or the next sample.
An animation of the measuring process is shown on the screen during the measurement.
The sample ID and number of measurements is displayed at the top as well. At the bottom a
progress bar is displayed together with the currently performed task. Additionally, a “STOP”
button is available on the right side of the screen. Pressing it will abort the measurement.
When the measurement is completed a detailed result screen (see section 7.1 for details) is
displayed and the pump is activated automatically to empty the instrument and rinse it with
air.
To check the possibility of an upgrade please contact eralytics or your local distributor.
If a density module according to ASTM D7777 is installed the measurement is finished after
the measurement is finished as soon as the detailed result screen is displayed. If a
temperature-controlled density module is used the density result is followed by “(P)”.
During the ongoing density measurement for ASTM D4052 the instrument activates the
pump to check if the density module was filled correctly. Afterwards the measurement
continues. After a certain amount of time the value after the result changes to “(C)” and live
converging values are displayed. A stable result and finished measurement is indicated by
“(A)”.
“Method” Select the desired measurement module for all measurements of the
current sample run.
“#” Port number of the auto-sampler. Currently active port (e.g. for entering
sample IDs with a barcode reader) is displayed in red. A short click on the
number can be used to change the selected port. A long click will open a
field with additional information (only used for some methods)
“Library sets” Allows to select predefined library sets, which are edited using the
“LIBRARIES” button.
“On” Ports can be activated (red / white) or deactivated (grey) by using the
corresponding switch.
“LIBRARIES” Opens the library editor (“EDIT” during operation without auto-sampler)
“Common” By clicking on the arrow a field with additional information can be displayed
(e.g. time of last reference measurement). Entries depend on selected
method.
During the measurement the port numbers are displayed on the right side. Red ports with a
check (e.g. 1) are already measured, the red pulsating port (2) is currently measured and
grey ports with a white number (e.g. 3) are waiting for measurement. Dark grey ports (e.g. 8)
are deactivated for this sample run.
After each measurement the detailed result screen is displayed for a short time.
To perform a reference measurement, put the inlet tube into the cyclohexane used for
preparing the diluted sample and press “REFERENCE”. Date and time of the last reference
measurement will be displayed.
EN238 requires that the gasoline is diluted with pure cyclohexane in the ratio 1:25, 1:50, or
1:100, depending on the benzene concentration of the sample. This dilution factor is needed
to correctly calculate the benzene concentration in the (undiluted) gasoline. Before a
measurement is started, enter the correct dilution factor for the sample in the “Dilution (1:x)”
field.
When a dilution of 1:50 is used it means that a 2% solution is created. Thus 1:2
means a 50% created and 1:1 would be the undiluted sample.
If the density of the undiluted gasoline is entered as well, the instrument will convert the
result from Vol% to Mass% as well. ERASPEC cannot determine the density of the undiluted
sample, because only the diluted sample is injected. Therefore, the density of the undiluted
gasoline must be determined separately and entered into the “Measure” menu prior to
starting the measurement if the benzene concentration shall be displayed both in Vol and
Mass%.
The measurement can be started by using the “RUN” button. The displayed result will only
show the benzene content according to EN 238. If other results are needed as well, the
measurement must be repeated using the “Gasoline” method and the undiluted sample.
To perform a reference measurement, put the inlet tube into the FAME-free middle distillate
used for preparing the diluted sample and press “REFERENCE”. Date and time of the last
reference measurement will be displayed.
The older version EN14078:2003 required to dilute the diesel with cyclohexane in a ratio 1:10
or 1:20, depending on the (expected) FAME concentration in the sample. The spectrum of
this diluted sample is then measured. In this case cyclohexane should be used as solvent for
reference measurement as well.
In 2010, this old version was superseded by EN14078:2009. This standard defines 2 ranges:
Samples that fall within range A shall be measured undiluted. Samples that fall within range
B shall be diluted with a FAME free middle distillate at a dilution ratio of 1:5. Higher
concentrations can also be measured using higher dilution ratios.
When a dilution of 1:5 is used it means that a 20% solution is created. Thus 1:2
means a 50% created and 1:1 would be the undiluted sample.
This dilution factor is needed to correctly calculate the FAME concentration in the (undiluted)
Diesel. Before a measurement is started, enter the correct dilution factor for the sample in
the “Dilution (1:x)” field.
The measurement can be started by using the “RUN” button. The displayed result will only
show the FAME content according to EN 14078. If other results are needed as well, the
measurement must be repeated using the “Diesel” method and the undiluted sample.
Afterwards It uses the appropriate module (Gasoline or Diesel) and performs the analysis in
the same way as if the respective module would have been selected manually. All settings
(calibration, libraries, warnings) will be used the same way as if the method would have been
selected manually.
In the result overview the information in the result overview is limited to date & time, sample
ID, used method, density and operator. However, the detailed result can be opened by
clicking on the “i” on the left-hand side of the result. Additionally, the result is stored in the
results of the used method. In the example above the sample is also displayed in the results
of the “Diesel” method.
The library editor can be opened by clicking on the “EDIT” button in the “Measure › Libraries”
menu.
Library sets are a combination of one or more libraries that are treated as one big library by
the instrument. Switching between different library sets for measurements can be done in the
“Measure” menu using the drop-down menu. To modify them, click on the “EDIT” button.
Library sets can be created, modified and deleted in the “Measure › Libraries” menu.
To create a new library set, click in the white filed beside “Library set” to open the onscreen
keyboard and type in the desired name and confirm with “OK”. To delete a library set, select
it from the drop-down menu, delete it with the backspace button and press ok. Confirm that
you want to delete it in the pop-up window. The library set “default” cannot be deleted.
To modify a library set, move the libraries that should be used in the “Active” column and all
that shouldn’t be used in the “Available” column. Changes will be applied as soon as you
leave the editor.
Clicking on a bold number (or the empty field) opens the keyboard to change the
corresponding value. If you select the sample ID (line color changes to red) the complete line
can be deleted by clicking “DELETE LINE”
Clicking on the number on the left-hand side of the parameter will open the “Detailed library
statistics”. A Graph shows the relation between the calculated values vs entered reference
values. The table on the top shows the samples sorted by the deviation between prediction
and reference.
“NEW” will open the onscreen keyboard to enter the name of a new (empty) library.
Pressing “OK” will create it.
“DELETE” will delete the currently selected library in the “Available” column. Libraries in the
“Active” field cannot be deleted, even if the library set where it is used is currently not used.
Move it first to the “Available” column for all library sets.
“IMPORT” will search for libraries in the root directory of the USB drive and in one of the sub-
directories automatically created by the instruments if exporting the libraries. Available
libraries will be displayed.
Select the libraries that you want to import by using the corresponding switch and confirm by
clicking “IMPORT”.
The parameters displayed in the “IQT” (Initial Qualification test) tab allow to judge if the
hardware of the instrument is working within specification. If these values are within
specification, issues with measurement results are most likely caused by the calibration for
substances or the used libraries to calculate properties.
After performing a reference measurement, the IQT values are updated and displayed.
“EXPORT” Exports the current IQT values to a USB drive. Only active if a
USB drive is connected to the instrument. After exporting the IQT
values the instrument will ask if the USB thumb drive should be
unmounted. Press “YES” to unmount the USB thumb drive or “NO”
to keep it mounted and export further data (e.g. results).
“Centre burst position” Position of the large peak in the raw data the interferogram.
“Water vapor line” Position (data points) of a specific water vapor absorption line in
the last measured spectrum
More details to the above parameters and possible corrective actions can be found
in section 11 (“Service”)
In the “Options › General” menu various settings for the measurement can be adjusted:
“Dual” Only available for “Gasoline” method (For Diesel in will be available if
the optional 400µm cell is installed as well).
Activated switch allows to perform a subsequent measurement
through a cell with a higher pathlength to improve detection limit for
additives (e.g. MMT) or contaminants. The second scan and
evaluation of spectra is performed automatically.
“Average scans” Number of scans averaged for a measurement. Only the averaged
scan is used for evaluation and can be displayed. Each additional
scan increases measurement time by 15-20 seconds
Default setting: 1 / max scans 8
“Show “Remove tube from sample” message” Displayed after the measurement cell and
densitometer is filled complete. Message can be activated /
deactivated using this switch.
“Pump | Auto filling” If switch is activated the instrument will activate the pump when a
measurement is started automatically and rinse the instrument with
air after the measurement. If this switch is deactivated the instrument
will perform a measurement without activating the pump.
“FILL” Pump will be activated for the specified filling time (see section 9)
“EMPTY” Pump will be activated for the specified emptying time (see section 9)
“Densitometer | On” Densitometer will report live values as long as this switch is active
The “Options › Recalc” tab allows to recalculate a measurement with current instrument
settings and a different background spectrum. Select the sample and reference spectrum
from the drop-down list (sorted by date & time), and press “RECALC”. The detailed result
screen with the recalculated results will be displayed.
Recalculated results can’t be stored. Only results from the measurement itself are stored on
the instrument.
A filter warning can be activated in the “Options › Filter” tab. The instrument will check if the
density of a sample is below a predefined (method depending) limit. If the density is too low,
the densitometer was not filled correctly. The most common reason for this is a partially
blocked inlet filter. When the warning is displayed, it is recommended to change or clean the
inlet filter.
Additionally, the filter tab enables setting a reminder for the cleaning / exchange of the filter
in the instrument inlet. The “Interval for filter change” field defines the number of
measurements between the warnings. The “Filter change due” field shows the number of
measurements to the next filter change warning.
The buttons “RESET” and “DISABLE” can be pressed to reset the counter or to disable the
warning altogether, respectively.
Swipe over the results table vertically to scroll down to view older measurements. Swipe over
the results table horizontally to see more information about the currently displayed
measurements.
Alternatively, use the arrows below the results to navigate the results table.
To select measured results, press longer (approx. 1s) on the screen until the result turns red.
Keep the finger pressed and scroll to select more results (for instance, for printing). To
deselect the marked results, click once (for a short time) in the results table.

the folder “results/eraspec5/ESFxxxxxxxx/pdf”. Uses the format defined in the
printer file “pdf.print”. The button will be only active if a USB thumb drive is
connected.
After exporting results or a pdf, the instrument will ask if the USB thumb drive shall be
unmounted or if it should remain mounted (for instance, if a pdf shall be generated and the
results shall be exported).
The two buttons in the top right corner controls the view of the results table (section 7.2) and
defining the format of file exported to USB (section 7.3) as well as results file management.
The detailed result screen is displayed directly after the measurement or if the “i” button on
the left-hand side of the sample line in the result overview is pressed.
In the top section the density and information / warnings concerning result evaluation will be
displayed. Comments for the measurement can be added as well.

substance or property.
In the “General” tab the name and displayed units of a substance can be changed. The
density used for the conversion between vol% and mass% is displayed but the literature
values can’t be changed by the user.
As default setting ERASPEC will display 2 decimal places if the result is below 10% and 1
decimal place if the result is above 10%. If the unit shall always report only 1 decimal place,
deactivate the “2 digits if <10%” checkbox.
For gasoline contaminants the default unit it “g/l”. To display vol% or mass% use the
“Vol / Mass” switch at the top and confirm with “SAVE”.
Normally ERASPEC will not show results for substances that were not found in the sample.
I.e. instead of showing a line with a concentration of “0”, the substance will not be displayed.
If the “Show always” switch is active, the instrument will also report results of “0” and not
delete this line.
“Set to 0 if <” in the limit tab allows to set the substance concentration to “0” if it is below this
value. Default values for these settings are in the range of the limit of detection. Depending
on the “show always” setting, these results will also be removed from the detailed result
screen.
ERASPEC uses a CLS with a k-matrix fit to calculate the substance concentration from
known pure substance spectra. “Remove if <” removes a substance from the calculation if
the value in this matrix is below the displayed value.
An upper and a lower warning limit can be set in the “Warning” tab. If a substance warning is
triggered the corresponding line is marked red in the detailed result screen.
An upper and a lower warning limit can be set in the “Warning” tab. If a substance warning is
triggered the corresponding line is marked red in the detailed result screen.
The section “Gas bubble detection” is not used for this module.

the following steps:
A full (re)calibration of density module temperature sensors and of the density module using
air and reference substance density values is only available during service by eralytics or it’s
trained distributors.
ERASPEC is using factory stored reference spectra of pure substances in combination with a
k-matrix fit to calculate the concentration of fuel components. However, if it is found that the
results for a concentration should be improved, it is possible to enter correction factors
and/or an offset for all parameters, according to the equation
If the “Active” switch is deactivated, the calibration is not used. Factory calibration can be
restored by clicking the “RESTORE CALIBRATION” button. Confirm that you want to reset
the calibration.
For some substances an advanced calibration menu is used. These substances are typical
gasoline contaminates or FAME in Diesel. When such a substance is selected in the
“Calibration” menu, the advanced calibration tab will be displayed automatically.
The top table will be automatically populated as the calibration measurements are performed
and show date and time when the standard was measured, the reference concentration and
the predicted value without applying a correction factor. Additionally, a value for peak height
or area (depending on the substance) will be displayed. “Type” shows the used
measurement cell or selected peak (also depending on the substance). The second table
contains the calibration constants calculated by the measured standards.
To perform a calibration, enter the concentration in the “Concentration” field at the bottom
and select the corresponding unit from the “Unit” drop-down. Press the “RUN” button to start
the measurement. Upon completion the instrument will add the results to the to column. After
measuring all standards, press the “CALC” button to calculate the calibration curve.
“GRAPH” Shows a graph of the calibration. Before the graph can be displayed
the calibration needs to be calculated.
“DELETE SAMPLE” Deletes a selected sample. Press for approx. 1 second on a sample
line to select it. If selected the color changes from black to red.
“Force zero” If activated, the instrument will use an offset of 0 for this calibration,
thus forcing the calibration curve through the point “0 concentration |
0 value”.
If deactivated the instrument will use an any calculated offset
“Use nonlinear” If activated, the instrument will allow a fit using a 2nd order polynom
(“Square” value ≠ 0). If deactivated, this value will be 0.

Remove the sampling tube and unscrew the nut to access the filter. The filter will either sit on
the inlet or be inside the nut. If the filter is in the nut, gently tap the nut against the table until
the filter falls out.
The filter has a steel rim and can be cleaned by sonication or by hand. If you rinse the filter
with solvents, please rinse the filter with cyclohexane before mounting it to avoid that other
strongly absorbing solvents enter the spectrometer.
