1. GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Digimax Plus is a microprocessor measuring instrument with one channels, used to read and elaborate signals from one
or more load cells (not simultaneously) as reference loads for the calibration of compression machines (all the load cells
described in our general catalogue, section 82, can be used). Each load cell supplied by Controls with the 82-P0801/E is
complete with a calibration certificate which shows the relationship between the number of divisions shown on the display
and the applied load. The instrument can be interfaced with the dedicated software program 82-P0804/E2.
The instrument is housed in an ergonomically designed light alloy using with an anti-scratch polycarbonate front panel with
ten key touch keyboard and large mono-chromatic graphical display. The rear panel houses the parts for the connection
of load cell, remote sampling button, serial ports and main feed with anti noise filter, fuse and on/off switch.

The other elements that form this screen are:

1) State of serial communication. This normally shows “----------“. During remote function mode (see below) it gives
information on the connection of the PC with specific messages.

2) State of back-up battery. The P0801/E is fitted with a re-chargeable battery which is used to supply the memory
of the instrument when the unit is switched off, thus avoiding the loss of saved data and settings. The fully
charged battery has a voltage of approx. 4.2 to 4.3 V and in this state can maintain stored data for about 4 –
6 months.
Each time the instrument is switched on the battery is re-charged. It is quite normal that after a long period of
non use the indicator is not at its maximum value; after a few minutes an increase in the charge level will be
noted. The time required to fully re-charge the battery (from completely flat) is approximately 24 hours.
We recommend that the unit is not left unused for a period over 4 – 6 months. If testing is not to be made,
periodically switch on the unit and leave it on for a few hours. The total discharge of the battery can cause the
loss of stored data and the set up configuration of the instrument.

3) Version of installed firmware

4) Date and time

5.2 Next select the work mode, selecting “remote” if the instrument is to be used via a PC with the 82-P0804/E2 program,
or selecting "Local" if the instrument is used by its keyboard.

USE OF THE INSTRUMENT IN REMOTE MODE

In this mode, the P0801/E acts as the interface between the load cell and a PC with program 82-P0804/E2. The connection
between the P0801/E and the PC is through a 9 pin serial cable supplied with the unit.
Connect the RS232 port of the P0804/E to the serial port (COM) of the PC. After selecting the type of test (measure force
or apply force) select “REMOTE”. This display will show the divisions read and the keyboard is inactive accept the “ESC”
key which allows return to the previous menu. An the other functions of the unit or disabled and this cannot be used, the
operative sequence, data acquisition, saving and elaboration of data are made via the PC.

Start up the software on the PC referring to the specific instruction manual. When the serial communication is made the
display of the P0801/E shows a message indicating the COM port being used. Eventual errors in serial communications will
be shown in the same field.

USE OF THE INSTRUMENT IN LOCAL MODE

In this case the P0801/E is autonomous and operated via its keyboard and the read data are shown directly on the display.

6.4.2 The instrument is now ready for the test, however some preliminary operations should be made to ensure good stability
and repeatability of results:
- Position the load cell between the compression machine platens. Refer to the compression machine instruction
manual for use of distance pieces etc.
- Check that the load cell is of a suitable capacity; refer to the calibration certificate issued by Controls to obtain
the conversion between the number of divisions shown on the display and the applied load in Engineering units.
It is important to note that the readings shown on the display are divisions.
- Check that the load cell is connected to the “load cell” port of the P0801/E and wait at least 15 minutes after
turning on the unit before preceding the test.
- After this period zero the reading, which initially will be several thousand divisions, with the zero key (F1).
- Load the load cell up to its maximum capacity using a medium load rate (of course not exceeding the maximum
capacity of the compression machine) and then unload to zero. Wait for approximately one minute and then zero
the readings again which could be several tens of divisions.
- Repeat this load/unload procedure for 4 to 6 times until the residual reading after unloading is just a few
divisions.

The unit is now ready to be used to check the calibration of the compression machine.

INSTRUCTION MANUAL 6 feb 2006

6.4.3 Before proceeding with other instructions it is important to give a brief explanation of the calibration verification
procedure and the way in which the P0801/E reads, saves and prints data:

- Calibration verification of compression machines consists in comparing the readings given by the compression
machine (digital or gauge) with the reference load cell. In this case the reference load cell is the one connected
to the P0801/E.
- The verification is made at a few load values, normally 5 (corresponding to 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100%
of full scale) or more, repeating the readings three or four times. It is recommended that the reference standards
being used is consulted in this regard.
- The P0801/E allows the readings to be saved in files of groups each of which consists of a maximum of four
series of 12 readings each. It is possible to save up to 50 groups of readings for a total of 2400 individual
readings; each group is identified by the descriptive parameters input in the “Test Descriptive” menu, that is the
test number, operator name, type of test, load cell description, notes, date and time.
- Using the file management menu it is possible to access filed data so as to display them on the display, transmit
them to a PC via the RS232 port or to a printer via the printer port. It is also possible to print the data whilst the
readings are made.
- To make a reading the remote sampling button connect to the unit by a 3 m cable. This operation “freezes” the
reading on the display of the P0801/E whilst the button is kept pressed, allowing the operator to intervene on
the controls of the compression machine at the same time. If the Auto-print function is active, upon pressing the
remote sampling button, the reading is transmitted to the printer connected to the printer port. If the “Auto-store”
function is active the readings will be saved automatically. If both functions are active the reading will be both
printed and saved. If neither of the functions is active then the reading will only be shown the display but not
saved.
- To evaluate the relationship between the number of divisions and the corresponding load values, the calibration
certificate issued by Controls with each load cell must be consulted.

6.4.4 Once all the preliminary operations have been made it is possible to start the compression machine. Zero any readings
on the display before the load cell is subjected to any load.
IMPORTANT: never zero the readings once the load cell has been subject to loading.
Proceed at a moderate load rate, and when one approaches the first load to be verified further reduce the load rate
as much as possible. The slower the load rate at making readings, the more accurate will be the readings. To freeze
the reading on the display press the remote sampling button (or F2 or SAVE on the P0804/E panel). It will be noted
that the reading in divisions remains blocked for a few seconds after saving and, in any case, for all the time the remote
sampling button remains pressed.

6.4.5 Now the P0801/E has “Captured” the division value of the load to be verified. Remember that it is possible to record
up to 12 readings in each series, above this the message “SERIES COMPLETE” and excess readings are not saved.
If the series of readings is complete, press ENTER to pass to the next series. The display will up date the series number
by one.

6.4.6 Repeat The same procedure for all the successive load values to be checked. Remember that in each series it is
possible to make up to 12 readings, above this the message SERIES COMPLETE appears and excess readings are
not saved. If the series is complete and correct, press ENTER to confirm and pass to the next series. In this case the
display will update the series number by one.
If the series of readings is not correct or is to be ignored press ESCAPE and re-start from point 6.4.4.
In any case it is not necessary to make all 12 readings to pass to the next series; by pressing “NEW” confirmation is
requested to pass to the next series. Confirm with ENTER.

6.4.7 Unload the load cell to zero, wait at least 30 seconds so that the zero reading is stable. Now the unit is ready for the
next series of readings which will form part of the same group as the series of readings just finished.

6.4.8 Repeat the operations described in 6.4.4, 6.6.5 and 6.4.6 to pass to the third and, if necessary, fourth series of readings
as described in point 6.4.7

below:

Press the same key again to return to the previous display.

6.4.10 For printing instructions see chapter 7

6.4.11 At the end of the test, when all the readings have been made, press ESC to return to the previous menu. To confirm
press ENTER or ESC to remain in the same menu. To make a new test enter the “Test Description” menu, the test
number will increase by one. Follows the instructions from point 6.2 onwards.

7. USE OF PRINTER DURING ACQUISITION OF READINGS
