What is the impact that the


problem/challenge has on instructional practice and student learning? Provide examples to
demonstrate the impact of the problem/challenge.

A significant problem that Jackling Elementary is facing is the low levels of parent and
community member involvement in the school. This comes in the form of participation in
community related committees such as PTA or the Community Council, volunteer time
within the school assisting with tasks and supervision, and family participation in
academic endeavors such as parent teacher conferences (SEPs as called by Granite
School District). This problem or challenge has a significant impact on student learning
because many teachers and staff members within the school want to help students
reach their full potential but they need to have parent, family, and community
involvement in order to do so. Without learning being viewed as a partnership between
home and school, and members of the community willing to participate in school
functions, or be active participants in their child’s learning at home, there is a limit to the
growth that a student will make. That seems drastic, but it is true. The partnership has to
be present, and functioning at a high level. In order for this to happen, work has to be
done on both sides of the partnership. Teachers and staff members need to seek out
ways to be more welcoming as a school and to invite community members to have a
desire to strengthen the partnership.

What longitudinal data did you collect? Why are the data appropriate? How do the data support
your choice of a significant problem/challenge?

I received data about the number of parent/community members that have participated
in the school PTA as well as the community council over the last 3 school years, as well
as the current numbers for this school year. I also compiled data for the SEP (parent
teacher conference) attendance over this same period of time. Opposite to this, I
collected data for the number of teachers in the school who participated in home visits at
the beginning of the school year to build family and community relationships. It is evident
through this data that the involvement of these individuals in the school is low and has
been for a number of years. Beyond this it is also evident that there is work that can be
done on both sides as teachers can improve their efforts to participate in programs that
will build those relationships and welcome individuals into the school.

What result do you anticipate if the problem/challenge is addressed? How will the result(s)
impact instructional practice and student learning?

In the 2019-2020 school year teachers were encouraged through a variety of methods to
participate in home visits, and a program to welcome families into the school and provide
instructional support for their students was started. There was a larger number of
families who were reached outside the school that year, and in turn there was a higher
sense of a partnership that year among teachers. With COVID, it became harder for
families to participate and we are still seeing the effects of that this year, but we are
hoping that as conditions continue to improve, and I work to implement a plan with our
Family and Community Engagement Committee to bring families into the building, that
we will seeing higher numbers of volunteers, participants, and families interested in
seeking out materials to build that partnership for their student’s education.
