Participate in multiple IEP and 504 accommodation plan meetings in support of or as the LEA
representative.

Competency Description:
I have attended many IEP and 504 meetings in the elementary setting but in my internship at the
Jr. High, I have been able to attend several IEP meetings, one 504 meeting, and two of the MTSS
meetings for school. I would say that the information and approach for the IEP meetings was
very similar to what I am used to seeing in the elementary setting.

Where I feel that I learned the most was in the MTSS meetings. These were not with families,
but rather the whole team of individuals in the school, including administrators, working together
to identify student needs and problem solve together. There is so much that goes on behind the
scenes for helping students. I know that a similar team meeting takes place in my elementary
school, but the team is much larger in a secondary school.
I was able to work with the assistant principal at the Jr. High to create a “cheat sheet” for
everything that needs to be covered during an IEP or 504 meeting so that nothing is overlooked
or forgotten. In the second IEP meeting that I attended, she allowed me to practice going over the
procedural safeguards and offering those to the family so they could ask questions if they needed
to. It was really helpful to see the different roles in the meetings beyond just the general
education teacher.
