Supervising school activities and monitoring the process for collecting and handling fees and
gate receipts.

Competency Description:
I had the opportunity to participate in several supervision activities at Matheson Jr. High that
included before and after school activities as well as behaviors and money collection. The main
after school supervision that I was able to do involved 6 of the home basketball games that took
place at Matheson. These included both boys and girls basketball. I was mostly monitoring the
student section of the bleachers and ensuring that individuals entering and leaving the gym were
where they were supposed to be. After each of the games were over, I was also able to provide
supervision for student pickup and assist with students who needed to call home and find rides so
that we were not leaving any students unattended on school grounds. These basketball games
were free for all families and students to attend, so there were not any opportunities for me to
collect or handle money in these situations.
At one of the basketball games there was an incident with a student where inappropriate
language was used and additionally an item was thrown through the student section that is not
considered appropriate for school. I assisted in removing these students from the group and
taking witness statements from several individuals so that administration could follow up with
them the next day.

I was, however, able to get practice with this as I assisted with the two dance performances held
at Matheson. The dance team sold tickets ahead of time for the performance and families could
also purchase tickets at the door. I was able to collect tickets for individuals and I was also able
to sell tickets and collect/count the money that was taken. When the events were over we counted
the total and made sure our numbers matched with the amount of tickets we had sold. This
money went to help fund activities and supplies for the dance team so I also had the opportunity
to discuss that with those in attendance. With these experiences I was also able to supervise the
crowds watching the shows and ensure that the building was properly cleared for the night when
they were over so that no students or individuals were left on school grounds unsupervised.

Finally, I had the chance to supervise for before and after school as well as the lunch room and
hallway passing periods. These were not technically for after school activities but I feel that this
fit under this competency because managing these behaviors during an unstructured time for the
school day is a challenge and learning to supervise secondary students in any setting is good
practice. I feel that I was able to learn a lot just in the short amounts of time that I was able to
practice these skills but I know that I will need so much more. This is something that I hope to
continually learn.
