I have had the opportunity to participate in the screening process for 2 positions this
semester. The first was hiring a 3rd grade teacher for Jackling Elementary school. This
took place in the summer before the school year started. I am currently on the 3rd grade
team, so it was interesting to think about this process through more than one lens. I was
keeping my desire to be an administrator in the future in mind, as I thought about the
questions my principal had picked out, and I was also thinking a lot about the various
personalities that we encountered as I thought about individuals I would want to work on
a team with. I learned that I feel that is very important when hiring teachers. I really
appreciated that my principal specifically asked me if I felt our personalities would work
well together. That showed me that he cared about my wellbeing, and was also looking
for someone that would be a good fit for the job itself. Walking away from this situation I
learned that I would like to emulate my current principal and implement many of the
same things that he did in the future.

During this process I was able to learn about the rules and specifics for my district that
are important to keep in mind during the screening process. I was able to learn that when
applicants apply, they are listed as either in-district applicants, or they are considered
outside applicants. If we would have wanted to interview any of the outside applicants, it
is a policy through our Human Resource Department that we would need to interview, or
at least offer an interview to all of them. We chose to initially begin with the internal
applicants, and we ended up choosing one of them, so we did not have to interview all of
the external ones. I also learned that you have to have a specific set of questions and you
have to ask each interviewee the same questions. This is to provide protection in in
prevention of discrimination. All of the interview questions and answers need to be kept
on file so that they can be accessed if needed.

The second situation I was able to assist with was hiring a sweeper for our building.
These are usually high school students who come and work at the school to assist the
custodian in their daily tasks. Our custodian was short a sweeper and needed to hire one.
We were able to consider and interview multiple individuals for the position and it was
extremely interesting to learn about the process and tasks that these sweepers assist with.
With the screening process for this individual, I was also able to work with my principal
to fill out the HR paperwork for the candidate and participate in informing them that they
had been recommended for the job. I believe it was very valuable to walk through this
paperwork process. My mentor principal was extremely clear in his explanation, and that
was very helpful for me to learn. We currently have two other positions posted for hire
right now. They have been re-posted a few times and we are having a hard time finding
individuals who want to apply for the job. I will be participating in these screening
processes as well though when we are able to get applicants.
