Development Issues
Indigenous peoples in the Philippines face a variety of threats as a result of what they
refer to as "development aggression." As they struggle to defend their land, much of it is
in areas of forest or mountain that are rich in natural resources, and as a result, conflicts
frequently arise with companies, many of which are based outside the Philippines, that
want to exploit those resources - usually without the consent of the Indigenous Peoples.
The main issues that Indigenous Peoples face stem from large-scale mining that digs
up their land, large-scale dam construction that floods their land, widespread logging
that deforests their land, or the establishment of nature reserves or agriculture that
evicts or restricts access to their own land.
All of these activities can lead to conflict, which can result in militarization of their land,
loss of livelihood, or encroachment on settlements, which can lead to urbanization.
