Gothic Fiction

• Genre of literature that became popular in the


18th Century.
• Some characteristics include horror, death,
haunted homes, family curses, madness, ghosts,
and even romance.
• Originated with the creation of “A Gothic Story”
by English author Horace Walpole in 1764.
• Started out as a joke, Walpole originally meant for
the word gothic to mean ‘barbarous’
Who Is Edgar Allan Poe

• American short-story writer, poet, critic, and editor.


• Born January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. Died October 7, 1849 in Baltimore,
Maryland.
• Son of an English born Actress Elizabeth Arnold Poe and actor David Poe Jr.
• His mother died when he was three, presumably from tuberculosis. His father was
not in the picture. Leaving him to move in with John and Frances Allan.
• Developed a drinking and gambling addiction which left him in debt, leading him to
enroll into the army under the name Edgar A. Perry
• Married his 13-year-old cousin Virginia Clemm in 1836 who later also died of
tuberculosis.

Red Death” about her.
• Somewhere around September of 1849. he boarded a train home to New York City
from Virginia. He never arrived, and in October, a week later, he was found
delirious outside if Ryan’s Tavern. He was wearing clothes that did not fil and could
not describe what happened to him. He died on October 7, 1849, his last words
being “ Lord, help my poor soul”.
