• Genre of literature that became popular in the
18th Century. • Some characteristics include horror, death, haunted homes, family curses, madness, ghosts, and even romance. • Originated with the creation of “A Gothic Story” by English author Horace Walpole in 1764. • Started out as a joke, Walpole originally meant for the word gothic to mean ‘barbarous’ Who Is Edgar Allan Poe
• American short-story writer, poet, critic, and editor.
• Born January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. Died October 7, 1849 in Baltimore, Maryland. • Son of an English born Actress Elizabeth Arnold Poe and actor David Poe Jr. • His mother died when he was three, presumably from tuberculosis. His father was not in the picture. Leaving him to move in with John and Frances Allan. • Developed a drinking and gambling addiction which left him in debt, leading him to enroll into the army under the name Edgar A.
