Sensory Experience

Class average age (in months) 18-24 months

Primary Objective & Infant/Toddler Standards (You must list specific guidelines or
content standards and which domains: See above example). Scientific Exploration and
Learning – Begin to develop skills that lead to science concepts such as identify body part, cause
and effect*, daily routines, imitation of gestures and use of objects*, and identification of body
parts.

Secondary Objective & Infant Toddler Standard: Physical Development – coordinate large
and small muscles to move and play
Use improved eye-hand coordination to explore and manipulate objects.

Experience description: Students will have a big bin in front of them with lemons cut in half or
into slices. On the side there will be several bins with different colored water along with lemon
squeezers and droppers. The children can use the lemon squeezer to see what happens and they
can use the dropper to turn the lemons into different colors.

Materials:
- Large bin
- Lemons
- Lemon squeezer
- Glasses
- Small bins
- Water
- Food coloring
- Dropper

Scaffolding (child’s prior knowledge to build on): What the child will need prior knowledge
on for this activity is how to squeeze the lemons with the lemon squeezer as well as how to
squeeze the dropper to color the lemons. They can also learn about mixing colors and making
new colors by squeezing different colors onto the lemon and seeing what color it makes.

Plan for carrying out experience (what caregiver will do): Caregiver will lay out the supplies
and explain the activity. Caregiver will tell children they must be careful when touching their
face as the lemon could burn a little bit. Caregiver will then hand over the supplies to the
children and supervise as they do the activity and help if help is needed. Afterwards caregiver
will make sure children wash their hands well.

Assessment
A.  How would you be able to determine the success of this activity?
To determine the success of this activity you can look at whether the children were able to
squeeze the lemons and use the droppers to color the lemons as well as whether the children
liked the activity and had fun.

B.  Do you feel children’s knowledge based on this experience?  (Do I see this new
knowledge being learned in other areas)
I see new knowledge being learned from this activity like how different colors can make other
colors and what happens when you mix colors together. The children will also learn or further
learn how to squeeze the lemon in the lemon squeezer and use their motor skills for this.
