What is Verbal Communication?
 The Verbal Communication is a type of oral communication
wherein the message is transmitted through the spoken
words. Here the sender gives words to his feelings,
thoughts, ideas and opinions and expresses them in the form
of speeches, discussions, presentations, and conversations.
 The effectiveness of the verbal communication depends on
the tone of the speaker, clarity of speech, volume, speed,
body language and the quality of words used in the
conversation. In the case of the verbal communication, the
feedback is immediate since there are a simultaneous
transmission and receipt of the message by the sender and
receiver respectively.
 The sender must keep his speech tone high and clearly
audible to all and must design the subject matter keeping
the target audience in mind. The sender should always cross
check with the receiver to ensure that the message is
understood in absolutely the same way as it was intended.
Such communication is more prone to errors as sometimes
the words are not sufficient to express the feelings and
emotions of a person.
TYPES OF VERBAL COMMUNICATION
 PUBLIC COMMUNICATION-
Public communication happens when
individuals and groups engage in
dialogue in the public sphere in order
to deliver a message to a specific
audience. Public speaking events,
newspaper editorials and billboard
advertisements are a few forms of
public communication. Public
speaking can be a powerful tool for
an effective speaker who wishes to
present us with information not
known previously. Public speaking
skills are important for success in
school, career advancement, and for
increasing self-confidence. Public
Communication in Your Life
 SMALL GROUP COMMUNICATION-
Communication in small groups consists of
three or more people who share a
common goal and communicate
collectively to achieve it. During small
group communication, interdependent
participants analyze data, evaluate the
nature of the problem(s), decide and
provide a possible solution or procedure.
Additionally, small group communication
provides strong feedback, unique
contributions to the group as well as a
critical thinking analysis and self-
disclosure from each member. Small
groups communicate through an
interpersonal exchange process of
information, feelings and active listening
in both two types of small groups: primary
groups and secondary groups.
 INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION-
Interpersonal communication is the
process of exchange of information, ideas
and feelings between two or more people
through verbal or non-verbal methods. It
often includes face-to-face exchange of
information, in a form of voice, facial
expressions, body language and gestures.
The level of one’s interpersonal
communication skills is measured through
the effectiveness of transferring messages
to others. Commonly used interpersonal
communication within an organization
include daily internal employee
communication, client meetings,
employee performance reviews and
project discussions. In addition, online
conversations today make a large portion
of employees’ interpersonal
communication in the workplace.
 INTRAPERSONAL COMMUNICATION-
Intrapersonal communication is the
communication you have with yourself,
either spoken, written, or thought.
Intrapersonal communication can be
anything from solving a complex problem in
your mind to thinking about what to wear
today or what to have for breakfast. Besides
the normal intrapersonal communication
that reoccurs all the time, there are also
techniques and methods of positive
affirmations to lead a better, healthy, and
successful life using intrapersonal
communication. There are many self-help
books on the topic of intrapersonal
communication these days, even if they do
not necessarily use that concept. All
intrapersonal communication is triggered by
external or internal stimuli. All the
rethinking and musings with oneself are
intrapersonal communication.
WHAT IS NON VERBAL
COMMUNICATION
Nonverbal communication (NVC) is the transmission of messages or signals
through a nonverbal platform such as eye contact, facial expressions,
gestures, posture, and body language. It includes the use of social cues,
kinesics, distance (proxemics) and physical environments/appearance, of
voice (paralanguage) and of touch (haptics).
TYPES OF NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION-
 Body movements (kinesics), for example, hand gestures or nodding or
shaking the head, which are often the easiest element of non-verbal
communication to control.
 Posture, or how you stand or sit, whether your arms are crossed, and so
on;
 Eye contact, where the amount of eye contact often determines the
level of trust and trustworthiness;
 Para-language, or aspects of the voice apart from speech, such as pitch,
tone, and speed of speaking;
 Closeness or personal space (proxemics), which determines the level of
intimacy, and which varies very much by culture;
 Facial expressions, including smiling, frowning and blinking, which are
very hard to control consciously. Interestingly, the broad facial
expressions that show strong emotions, such as fear, anger, and
happiness, are the same throughout the world; and
 Physiological changes, for example, you may sweat or blink more when
you are nervous, and your heart rate is also likely to increase. These are
almost impossible to control consciously and are therefore a very
important indicator of mental state.
