STANDARD LESSON PLAN FORMAT


I. Describe the Class

1st grade class of 20 students. 12 boys, 8 girls. Five 7 year-olds, one 8 year old, fourteen 6 year-
olds. The 8 year old is developmentally delayed and has impaired vision. This is his second year
of 1st grade.

II. Objective(s)

The students will be able to identify the parts of a butterfly and learn the steps in the life cycle of
the butterfly.

III. Procedures

In the weeks leading up to our project, the class will be given caterpillars and a butterfly habitat
to watch the life cycle of a caterpillar turning into a butterfly. The students will be directed to
make daily observations for their journals and detail what they see through drawings and written
descriptions. During every part of the process the teacher will explain to the children what is
happening to give them some guidance.

Journals
Pencils/Crayons
Caterpillars
Butterfly habitat
Worksheets

V. Grouping Structures

The children will be broken into 5 discussion groups to collaborate about what each student sees
happening.

VI. Modifications

The 8 year old will be offered a magnifying glass to more clearly see the parts of the caterpillars
and butterflies.

VII. Assessment

At the end of the project, the children will be asked to complete a worksheet that labels the parts
a butterfly, and a worksheet that indicates the steps in the life cycle. This is how the teacher will
determine if the student understood the assignment and retained the information.
