Understanding typhoon
 Typhoon, hurricane and cyclone are all types of tropical storm, they are basically the
same thing but given different names depending on where they appear
- Hurricanes are tropical storm that form over the north Atlantic Ocean and northeast
pacific. Common within the northeast part of the Pacific Ocean and also in the
northern part of the Atlantic Ocean.
- Cyclone are formed over the south pacific and Indian ocean. Cyclone form when a
surface temperature is at least 26.5 degree Celsius
- Typhoons are formed over the northwest Pacific Ocean. Common in the northwestern
part of the Pacific Ocean
 Tropical storm never crosses the equator nor do they occur near it
 Hurricanes and cyclones are born in water at least eight degrees north or south of the
equator
 Because of the Coriolis effect the rotation of the earth sends them off on a track that arcs
away from the equator
 When a tropical cyclone enters the PAR (Philippine area of responsibilities), the
PAGASA (Philippine atmospheric, geophysical, and astronomical services administration
will announce public storm warning signal(PSWS)
Typhoon
 A typhoon is a type if large storm system having a circular or spiral system of kilometers
or miles in diameter
 Typhoon last a long time and are given names so they can be identified quickly
 The first storm of a year will have a name beginning with a and the next one gets a name
beginning with b so they are named in alphabetical order
 Typhoons start off as a tropical thunderstorm, the strong winds pull in moisture from the
ocean. The thunderstorms covert the moisture into heat, the heat causes more air to flow
to the center of the storm causing evaporation of water
 All the heat and air flow towards the eye creating typhoon
 The wind is caused by differences in atmospheric pressure.
 The intertropical convergence zone, or ITCZ, is the region that circles the Earth, near the
equator
Pre-conditions for typhoon:
Atmospheric condition
1. Pre-existing low-level focus or disturbance All important
2. Warm ocean water factor for
3. Low atmospheric stability typhoon
4. Sufficient Coriolis force transformation
5. Humid mid-atmosphere and upper atmosphere divergence
Mechanisms to cause typhoon formation
Atmospheric disturbances
 The most common mechanism to cause a typhoon to develop is the monsoon through
 The primary cause of monsoons is the difference between annual temperature trends over
land and sea
 The intertropical convergence zone is a zone of wind convergence of the northeast and the
southeast trade winds
 Typhoons are mostly cost by the monsoon trough and six of the seven hurricane or typhoon
formation basins of the world

 Typhoon gain power as they move over warm bodies of water and start losing energy once
they are over cold water
 The Sierra Madre Mountain ranges in the Philippines act as a typhoon barrier

Typhoon (what to do before, during and after):

What to do before:
 First inspect your house for cracks and leaks
 Prepare a first aid kit
 Store “no cook” food
 Prepare the emergency lights
 Be updated about latest weather reports
 Store an adequate supply of clean drinking water
 Pack emergency clothes
What to do during:
 Don’t panic
 Stay inside
 Watch the lighted candles and lamps
 Turn off the main switch
 Store appliances and belonging in high ground
 Don’t go through floodwaters
 Avoid the river
 Beware of electrocutions
What to do after:
 Check your loved ones
 Boil water for 20 minutes before drinking
 Don’t enter your destroyed house until its safe
 Report damaged electric cables and posts to authorities
 Dry the possible mosquito-breeding grounds

Lesson summary:
 A typhoon forms when the wind blows into areas of the ocean where the water is warm
 The wind rotates, or spin, around a center called an eye. The more warn air and moisture
there is, the more intense the winds
 The landforms and bodies of water on and around the Philippines affect the strength or
weakness of weather phenomenon such as typhoons

Session journal:
- I learned many things about typhoon. I learned how typhoon formed and also how they
even got their names, and especially I learned something more on how to be prepared
incase there is a typhoon that will happened.
- As a student and a young citizen of this country, I can use my knowledge about typhoon
by sharing this to them specially those younger ones out there as it can help them survive
by their own or even save their love ones by their own knowledge, and also I will use my
knowledge too to help my love ones to know more about on how to be prepared before
typhoon comes.
