FESTIVAL DANCE
Festival Dance is a cultural dances performed to the strong beats of percussion
instruments by a community of people sharing the same culture usually done in honor of a Patron
Saint or in thanksgiving of a bountiful harvest. Festival dances draw people’s culture by
portraying the people’s way of life through movements, costumes and implements inherent to
their place of origin.

Philippine festivals are town fiestas celebrating moments in history that defined identity,
polity and locality. Celebration of the arts and culture, albeit made central to these festivities,
only comes as a texture instead of text in the whole exercise of the Festival.

Nature of Festival Dances


Religious Dance
- Dances commonly celebrated on recurring cycles in a calendar year or lunar calendar.

A. Ati-Atihan Dance

Ati-Atihan is a religious festival honor Sto. Nino, and it is considered as the most
spectacular festival for lovers of Carnival-or Mardi Gras-like activities. The festive
events include traditional dances, flamboyant costumes, and vibrant music. Marked by
feasting and eating of the best regional delicacies and foods.
Place: Kalibo, Aklan
Date: every third Sunday of January
Themes: the march of the early Aetas of Aklan while performing the upbeat tune of
traditional dances and music.
Costume and Masks Design: Crisscrossing of linear lines; repeated curve and
streamlines; and, floral and geometric designs.

B. Sinulog Dance
Sinulog is a religious festival were in the participants are dressed in their colorful and
resplendent attires, they dance gracefully in various rhythmic patterns. The celebration
culminates with a grand parade.
Place: Cebu City
Date: every third Sunday of January
Themes: this is the Cebuano’s transition from paganism to Catholicism.
Costume Design: Crisscrossing of linear lines; repeated curve and streamlines; and,
floral and geometric designs.
C. Dinagyang Dance

Dinagyang is a religious festival celebrated to show reverence of Sto. Nino and to


remember the arrival of the Malay immigrants, also to marked with traditional dancers in
colorful costumes.
Place: Iloilo City
Date: every 4th week of January
Themes: the Ilonggo’s conversion to Catholicism from paganism; dancing the ancestor’s
upbeat dance using modern choreography.
Costumes and Mask Design: line patterns, rickrack, scrolls, curvilinear motifs,
animal/floral and geometric designs.
D. Pahiyas Dance
Pahiyas is a harvest festival in honor of San Isidro Labrador, the patron saint of
farmers here in the Philippines. The houses are decorated with colorful display of
vegetables, fruits, rice stalks, leaves and rice wafers called kiping. The annual
competition of the most decorated house, and culminates with a procession and
sharing of food among the people in Lucban.
Place: Lucban, Quezon
Date: every 15th May
Themes: asking for intercession when praying to Saint Isidore for bountiful harvest.
Costumes and Masks Design: repeated loops and curves floral designs.
E. Higantes Festival
Higante portray the art of papier-màche that conveys the importance of recycling
materials and thus promotes environmental conservation. The main attraction of the
festival is the parade of giant papier-màche (as tall as 15 feet).
Place: Agono, Rizal
Date: every 23rd of November
Themes: celebrating bountiful marine harvest by means of enlarging the image of the
fisherman’s patron saint, Saint Clement.
Costumes and Mask Design: crisscrossing of linear lines; and repeated curve and
streamlines.
F. Carabao Festival
Carabao the festival marked with the hanging of various colorful fruits, vegetables,
rice grains and colored kipings on bamboo. Carabaos are decorated with colorful
garlands. The culmination is the presentation of the carabaos at the end of the show.
Place: Pulilan, Bulacan
Date: every 14th-15th of May
Themes: paying respect to San Isidro Labrador, the patron saint of farmers—and the
Filipino farmers work companion- the carabaos or water buffalos.
Costumes and Masks Design: Bovid (of carabao’s) lines; crisscrossing of linear
lines; and repeated curve and streamlines.

Non-Religious Festival
- a festival that has no relation to any church or religion.

A. Panagbenga or Flower Festival


Panagbenga prominent features are the grand display of floats that are
adorned with lovely flowers, and the vibrant street dancing with dancers
dressed in elaborate costumes that are inspired by the shapes and colors of
flowers.
Place: Baguio City
Date: whole month of February
Themes: a celebration to pay homage to the beautiful flowers that bloom in
Baguio.
Costumes and Mask Designs: repeated loops and curves and floral designs
and geometric designs.
B. Masskara Festival
Masskara the main highlight of the festival are the masks worn by the
participants who join the energetic and vibrant street dances. The attractive
masks are decorated with captivating smiling faces.
Place: Bacolod City
Date: every third weekend of October
Themes: a celebration of positivity or optimism. This started in the early
1980’s when the prices of sugar went down. Images of colorful and cheerful
masks help the Negrenses established their city as the ‘City of Smiles’
Costumes and Mask Design: curvilinear motifs, grass/ floral and geometric
design. Decorations for masks; native beads, flowers, feathers, sequins and
artificial beads.
C. Kadayawan Festival
Kadayawan a celebration of bountiful harvest of fruits and vegetables.
Features a grand parade of floats(Pamulak sa Kadalanan) and culminates with
a street parade also (Indak-indak sa Kadalanan).
Place: Davao City
Date: every third week of August
Themes: a festival in celebration of the bountiful harvest of tropical fruits,
and asking for the protection of Philippine eagles and waling waling orchids.
D. Giant Lantern Festival
Giant Lantern features a contest of giant lanterns with size ranging from
three feet to 16 feet. Lanterns are elaborately designed and with various lights
inside.
Place: San Fernando, Pampanga
Date: every Christmas Eve
Themes: staging the awesome display of oversized lanterns handcrafted by
the locals and made to light up to the tune of lively music and breathtaking
fireworks.

Benefits of Festival Dance


 Festivals have been a consistent crowd-producing activity leading to up-
liftment of a community economy due to it’s tourism and entertainment value.
 It attracts foreign and domestic tourist to visit a place eventually leading to the
evaluation of Filipinos quality life.
