India is the sixth largest manufacturing country. The government aims to augment the share of
manufacturing in GDP to 25 per cent by 2022 from the present 16 per cent through various initiatives
taken by the Government of India. To achieve this, quality Mechanical/Manufacturing engineers plays
major role.
Admissions in Mechanical Engineering branch are diminishing year on year. In the state of Telangana, in
AY 2021-22, only 32.57% of seats were filled. It is happening in most of the states and students are not
showing interest to take admission in Mechanical Engineering. If it continues, GDP contribution by
manufacturing sector will be not be improved. Current Mechanical Engineering curriculum is not
meeting the requirements of the industry and aspiring graduate students. To improve the quality and
quantity of Mechanical Engineering graduates, there is a need to change the curriculum as per the
industry requirements. Though Industry 4.0 was officially launched in India in the year 2018, a
collaborative environment between the government, industry and academia is not yet established to
generate industry 4.0 ready workforce. The stake holders need to change the skill map to accommodate
fast-paced technology trends. The objective of this effort is to produce Industry 4.0 ready technocrats
from Mechanical Engineering stream.
To fill this gap, we are proposing few changes in Mechanical Engineering curriculum by adopting AICTE
proposed course structure and credits. The current workforce especially Mechanical Engineering
graduates would need to be re-engineered to fill the new roles. Hope this effort will help to achieve
Make in India initiative by the Government of India.
Without ignoring the core subjects of Mechanical Engineering, we have incorporated the latest industry
4.0 technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Cyber Security, Internet of Things, Digital
Twin, Cloud computing, Additive Manufacturing etc into Mechanical Engineering and we propose to
rename the branch as “Mechanical & Computer Engineering”. Mechanical Engineering is one of the
oldest branches of Engineering which can embrace the latest developments in the field of Science and
Technology.
Our intention is to limit the study of core subjects of Mechanical Engineering as per the GATE syllabus
prescribed by IITs and then to introduce Industry 4.0 technologies. If the student is interested in IT/ITES
industry, required courses should be included as electives during the course as per market
requirements.
Core subjects are covered as per the latest syllabus prescribed by GATE. This will make the students
ready to pursue higher studies and at the same time ready to absorb by Public Sector Undertakings, IES,
IFS, IRS, Research organizations and various state government services.
The latest Industry 4.0 technologies covered in the course will also make the students ready to absorb
by the companies which are emerging into new technologies on their way to industry 4.0 maturity and
graduates can also come up with startups if they want to grow as an entrepreneur or they can take up
the new roles like entrepreneurial employee. This will augment the Make in India initiative.
Apart from the core subjects of Mechanical Engineering as per the GATE syllabus and Industry 4.0
Technologies, various computer science related courses are also introduced as elective courses, to suite
for the requirements of IT/ITES companies, so that the student can opt his career objective and succeed
through student centric flexible course curriculum in “Mechanical & Computer Engineering”.
We urge the policy makers to go through the new curriculum proposed herewith and do the needful for
the benefit of all the stake holders of the Mechanical Engineering.
