Don’t forget chapter 3! This won’t be the focus of this exam, but take a look at the content after slide 22
on the chapter 3 material.

Chapter 4:

Understand the difference between simple and complex. What makes them different?

What is the primary role of carbohydrate in the body? How much energy does carbohydrate contribute
per gram?

What is fiber? What are the differences in the types (soluble, insoluble)?

Understand the roles hormones play in regulation of blood glucose and the storage of energy.

Know the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

How much carbohydrate is required? What will happen if not enough carbohydrate is consumed in the
diet?

Chapter 5:

What are the constituents of proteins?

Understand the basic steps in protein synthesis.

What determines a proteins function?

Know the basics of primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary protein structure.

What is protein complementation? Why is it important?

How much protein is recommended? How does this change with the athletic population?

What happens with inadequate protein consumption? How about more protein consumed than is
needed?

Know the difference between a food allergy and intolerance.

Chapter 6:

How much energy per gram?

What are the components of a triglyceride?

What is saturation as it pertains to fatty acids? How does this effect the properties of the lipid?

What fatty acids are essential?
