Reading Activity:
1. Read Chapter 8 “Why Join a Professional Association?” from The Profession of
Dietetics: A Team Approach (5th Ed.) by Payne-Palacio and Canter.
a. Bring your reactions, comments and questions to discuss in class.

Activity Instructions:
1. Visit the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics website at www.eatright.org, click
onto the earightpro tab at the top of the page, sign in (upper right hand side) with
your username and login.
2. Select Member Benefits (upper right hand side above the search function)
a. Spend time reviewing all of the “member benefits”
b. One of the member benefits is “publications and subscriptions”
i. Review the current publication and subscriptions available.
ii. Sign up for Nutrition and Dietetics SmartBrief
c. Select “Academy Groups” and then “Dietetic Practice Groups (DPGs)”.
i. Review the current Dietetic Practice Groups (DPGs).
1. Select three DPGs that match your professional interests.
Read the information about the DPGs you selected.
a. For each DPG you selected, write a short summary
(1 paragraph) describing your impressions of the
DPG and discussing how membership in this DPG
could benefit you as a student and as a dietetics
professional in the future.
d. Review the “student member center” page

Preparation for Class Discussion:

1. Be prepared to discuss the chapter reading with the class.
2. Be prepared to discuss Academy member benefits, and share one benefit you
learned about that you plan to use this semester.
3. Be prepared to discuss the DPGs that you researched, and share your summaries.
4. Be prepared to share your impression of SmartBrief
