Question 3:

Create an attainable generic exercise schedule for someone over 65.

Think about the physical limitations that may impact upon mobility, as
well as safety concerns and time constraints.

As people over the age of 65 have a weak body than younger people they will have to follow a
exercise routine as below;

Stretching Exercises- stretching will improve a person’s flexibility and help prevent injuries.
Exercises such as standing quad stretches, triceps stretch, etc are examples of such
exercises. Some individuals will find it hard to perform such activities specially when doing it
for the very first time due to lack of mobility so it is important to do it slowly and hold each
stretch for about a minute and not do if causing a lot of pain.

Aerobic Activities- These are the excersices which increase your heart rate such as
swimming, biking, etc. But some elderly people will have physical limitations stopping them
from engaging in such activites so they can engage in stationary excercises such as treadmill,
sit ups, etc for a time period of at least 150minutes which can be gradually reached by
beginners. It is important to keep track of the heart rate or pulse rate specially for elderly
people to make sure they don’t over do it which might even lead to a stroke.

Strength training- These are types of muscle training which makes your muscles to against a
applied force or weight to improve the strength of your muscles. These types of excercises are
lifting small hand weights, use of a elastic resistant band, and many more. Strength training
must be done at least twice a week. Some people might have physical limitations so they can
adjust and train accordingly. (Eg; lift a soup can if weights are too heavy) Make sure the
elderly people do not lift weights that are too heavy or do too many repetitions which may
cause injuries.

Question 4:
From your knowledge and any other additional research, create a flow
diagram to demonstrate how the major body systems relate to one
another. Design or paste the flow diagram in the space provided.

Identify three examples of how the major systems relate to other systems.

Circulatory System relates with the digestive system by carrying nutrients from the broken-
down food around the body.

Respiratory System works with muscular system by providing the oxygen the muscles need
for energy.

Skeletal system works with the circulatory system by producing the red blood cells that’s
circulated around the body.

Question 5:
How might you share information about healthy functioning of the body
to clients?
List three or more methods.

Effective Communication with the client about the matter.

Handing clients leaflets or brochures about heathy function of the body so that they’llbe
educated with it in their spare time.

Hanging posters for visual aid around the place of word or residence can educate the client as
they run across these posters.

Question 6:
Within the learning group, participate in a group discussion on one of
the body systems.
Provide minutes of the discussion and any specific items raised.
The minutes should provide sufficient details to identify the members
of the discussion group. Each individual’s contribution on the body
system chosen.

Attach the minutes to this page.

Assessment

Activity 1 Short answer questions

Answer the following questions, citing example(s) where appropriate. Sufficient answers to
questionsin this section would likely require 2-3 paragraphs / 150-300 words per question.

1. The human body relies on 10 organ systems to function. For this system to function
effectively requires the intake of substances(s) and disposal of waste.
What intake substance(s) is essential for the human body to function effectively?

2. How does the body protect itself from infection?

.

3 What is active and passive physical activity and why are these essential?

Activity 2: Research questions

Read Case Studies A, B and C, then answer the following questions.

Case Study A

1. Explain how John will benefit from taking up regular exercise such as walking or cycling,
and how this will help to improve his fitness and body health. You should also identify the
benefits to two of his body systems and provide two benefits for each system.

Case Study B

2. Explain what the musculo-skeletal system is, its function and how Maria can help improve
her knee health.

Case Study C

3. What is high blood pressure, and what can this cause?

Identify the methods that Timothy can use to reduce his blood pressure level.

Case Study A: the human body and its healthy functioning scenario one
John is fifty years of age; he does not participate in any regular exercise and is classed as
being overweight. He drives to his place of work each day and works as an office worker
which has a limited requirement for any physical activity; he may need to visit work colleagues
and access files and paperwork from the work area.
He has found it increasingly hard to catch his breath and when out walking he gets tired
relatively quickly, his goal is to improve his general fitness through starting some form of
physical exercise.
John’s want to improve his energy levels and his breathing.

Case Study B: the human body and its healthy functioning scenario two
Maria has a sports injury to her left knee; this has been caused through over-exertion from
training and participating in a recent half marathon event. When Maria trains, she finds that
after a short period of time, her knee feels uncomfortable and she experiences mild pain
around the joint.

HLTAAP001: Recognise healthy body systems Version 1
Assessment

Maria wants to understand how her knee joint works so she can find exercises which will help
improve her ability to run.

Case Study C: the human body and its healthy functioning scenario three
Timothy has been told by his doctor that he has high blood pressure and needs to reduce this
to a safer level.
He smokes 10 cigarettes each day and drinks alcohol three times a week; this is usually
between two to four beers, but can be more on some occasions. His job is quite stressful and
he often works long hours and eats on the go; this also leaves him with limited time to pursue
his own interests.

Assessment

Answers to activity 2 research questions

01. John is a person suffering from obesity so engaging in activities such as walking or cycling
will help burn a lot of calories and in turn help him loose weight. John is 50 years of age so he
as he is getting older exercise will help maintain his cardiovascular system healthy by pulling
more oxygen out from blood and reducing the need of more blood to be pumped to the
muscles and strengthening the heart. It also reduces stress hormone which is an extra weight
to the heart which will eventually increase the efficiency of his work at the work place.
Respiratory system also benefits massively from exercise. John finds it hard to catch his
breath so this will massively help him a lot by improving circulation and strengthening the
tissues around his lungs. As muscles need more oxygen during exercise, the lungs have to
work harder so the stale air deposited in the lungs with the toxins will be removed easily when
exhaled. John will also have more energy due to the muscles receiving enough oxygen.
Instead of driving to work john can walk to work if the work place is not that far away. But he
should consult with a doctor before doing that to see if its okay to do so since he finds it hard
to catch his breath. John sits a lot in his office place and even while driving to work, which is
the major reason for him to catch his breath and feel tired quickly when walking as the body is
not used to exercise. He can start small and gradually increase intensity of the exercises he
choose to do so that he will not suffer from any injuries.

02. The Musculo-skeletal system is combination of bones, joints, muscles, tendons and
ligaments which helps the human body move. The kneecap is covered with cartilage which
reduces the friction between tendons and the bone which help smoothen the joint movement
when the knee is bent or stretched. Maria can be having an imbalance in her muscles that
support her knee or an issue with the patella or kneecap. Sometimes it may be caused due to
the wearing off of the cartilages in the knee. Maria can improve her knee health by doing mild
exercises like walking or biking to strengthen the muscles around the knee. She can also try
reducing her weight because obesity can increase the risk of knee injury. It is necessary to
maintain a good posture as well to prevent injuries in the joints such as the knee.

03. When the force applied to the walls of the arteries by blood is too high it is known as high
blood pressure. Higher the blood pressure, higher the strain on the blood vessels on major
organs of the body such as the heart and brain so it can lead to life threatening risks such as
strokes or heart attacks. Smoking increases the build-up fatty substances in the arteries which
narrows the arteries which causes the blood pressure to increase or even from blood clots in
the blood vessels so he should definitely decrease or try to stop the use of cigarettes. On the
other hand, alcohol also affects the muscles in the blood vessels narrowing them and causing
high blood pressure so Timothy should also pay attention to the alcohol he intake and reduce
the intake. Stress also causes high blood pressure as it releases hormones that increases
heart rate. Timothy should decrease his work hours as it can be harmful to his health working
long hours under stress and start pursuing is own interests which will be less stressful. Eating
a healthy diet, good sleep and regular exercise are also factors which help reduce the blood
pressure to normal.
