Rationale Statement-Standard #6

Standard 6 Assessment

The teacher understands and uses multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their own

growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide the teacher’s and learner’s decision making (New

Jersey Professional Standards for Teachers Alignment with InTASC, 2014, p. 8).

Artifact: Observation Discussion – The Parent-Child Perspective of Learning During the COVID Era

Date of Completion: December 2021

Course Completed in: EDUC 230-02 Education Field Experience

Rationale Statement:

This artifact is a discussion response to a set of questions regarding a recorded interview with a

current educator and parent and her child. This artifact relates to standard 6.i.9 “the teacher continually

seeks appropriate ways to employ technology to support assessment practice to engage learners more

fully and to assess and address learners needs” (New Jersey Professional Standards for Teachers

Alignment with InTASC, 2014, p. 8). In this artifact I describe how the district of the child were very

communicative with the parents during the time of the pandemic and allowed them to choose between

going back to school in person or virtually. Since there are two groups of students, in-person and virtual,

the teachers have to efficiently use technology to support the virtual learners, but also imply other

methods of instruction or assessments to fit the in-person students as well.

This artifact was especially interesting to create because I was able to get not only a parent’s

viewpoint on the topic, but I was able to hear directly from a young student themselves. Even though I

am old enough to understand the situations the pandemic put people in, I had to understand that a child

might not. It was also interesting hearing from a parent in this situation because I was exposed to the

effects the pandemic not only put on young children academically, but how it affected families at home

and their relationships with each other. While creating this artifact I had to think about how the

teachers, in addition to the school, was able to figure out ways to accommodate both in-person students

and virtual students that were essentially learning the same things, but in different ways. I was able to

learn the pandemic put strains on instruction and assessments for teachers, but they were able to find

ways to make the experiences sufficient given the circumstances.

This observation is beneficial to me in the future because it shows the importance of

communication not only from a teacher standpoint, but on a district level too. I can use this artifact in

the future to help me establish a well communicative aspect with future parents of children; this can

help me create a relationship with parents of students where they trust that their child is in good hands

with me as their teacher.
