Interview Transcript.

Mr. Septian : Good morning, Mr. So, My name is Septian Riwaldi Sitanggang. Here I am want
to ask you some questions related to my research title, entitled the implementation
of Blended Learning to improve students’ speaking skill. So, are you a teacher?

Mr. Zulkarnaen: Yes, I am

Mr. Septian : Where do you teach?

Mr. Zulkarnaen: So, I teach at vocational high school. It is a public vocational high school in
north Pontianak

Mr. Septian : Are you teaching English subject?

Mr. Zulkarnaen : Yes, I am

Mr. Septian : What grade are you teaching?

Mr. Zulkarnaen : So actually I am teaching three class, three grades, so eleventh, tenth and
twelveth

Mr. Septian : So our focus will be on the tenth grade

Mr. Zulkarnaen : Oh tenth grade, right.

Mr. Septian : I will, I have prepared some questions that I will ask to you, it’s about blended
learning, the implementation of blended learning. Is it okay?

Mr. Zulkarnaen : Yes, sure

Mr. Septian : Ok, so the first question will be like this, how is the planning of implementing
the blended learning in your school during this pandemic

Mr. Zulkarnaen : Actually covid-19 pandemic has hit us really hard. So because you know at the
first time the students were really hard to use internet because it was their first
time to use internet just like google classroom, zoom and the other application.
So, hmm our preparation to implement the blended learning because in our
school, we have the schedule like this so in the first week, so there will be
eleventh class and the twelveth class and then another week there will be tenth
grade and then twelveth grade and another week so eleventh class will have
online class. And then another week again, so the tenth grade will have an online
class. So the preparation is that when I am having an online class, so I always
prepare some lesson plan and I am also making some videos to teach my students
so that before they join in the next class in the offline class so they will know the
material that I will deliver in the offline class

Mr. Septian : Oh it’s actually the blended learning yes of course is the combination between
the offline and online, right? It takes a long time of course, need more preparation

Mr. Zulkarnaen : Yes, that is true

Mr. Septian : During the implementation of this strategy, techniques, what problems do you
face during the implementation of this strategy?

Mr. Zulkarnaen : Just like I told you before, when they are having an online class, they still have
lack of capability to use the application for example just like google classroom,
zoom and google meet. Because you know, some of my students are coming from
low middle class family, so sometimes their family don’t have that much money
to buy some internet quota for having an internet connection. I think that’s one of
the problem about internet connection, and also some of the students still have
low ability to use internet and also some economic issues

Mr. Septian : Okay, so technology really takes a big impact for this situation, right?so, by having
this problem you have mentioned earlier, how do you overcome it as you are as a
teacher to overcome the problems of the students?

Mr. Zulkarnaen: Ya, so you know when we are having offline class, so I always teach my
students how to use the zoom, Google classroom and Google meet, so I use that
time to explain more to them on how to use those applications. But day by day,
now they get used to it, now they are able to use that application.
Mr. Septian : Yes, it is actually, for example when they don’t have the internet balance, they
don’t have the quota, internet connection, during the online learning they will
come to the school, you will teach them, right? So, that’s one of the benefit by
implementing by implementing the Blended Learning itself. How is it work for
now? What do you think? How does it work the Blended Learning in your school
so far?

Mr. Zulkarnaen : Yes, I think it is quiet effective because when I am having an online class, I can
teach my students to be individual students, so they are trying to understand the
material by themselves so If they have any questions maybe they can ask their
friends or they may ask the teacher as well when they are having difficulties,
when they are watching YouTube or some materials that I have made. So, I think
it is now really effective and then when we are having the offline class, I just need
to explain more and asking more questions related to our material?

Mr. Septian : Yeah, during the implementation of this strategy, this technique, how do the
respond of your students?

Mr. Zulkarnaen :Yes, at first, they were really shocked, they were really surprised at that time
because they didn’t know how to use the technology but now day by day because
just I told you before, I try to teach them how to use the technology and
application, and now I think they are getting improved and then how, I think they
will get used to it to use the technology. I think after now, it will be easier for me
to teach them online class.

Mr. Septian :Yes, it will help the students really a lot, right? During this situation where they
can also learn onlinely and they can go to the school learning offline, so it will
improve them a lot, right? So the time management is also important, right? How
can you manage your time during the offline learning and online learning.

Mr. Zulkarnaen: Yeah, I think at the first time it was really hard for me as well yeah, because
you know this is one of the newest method for me, because at first I teach offline
and after that I teach online. It was really hard for me at the first time, yeah,
because as you know as the teacher we always try get adapted easily with any
other situation that is out of our expectation, right? So yeah, the time management
is really important for me how to manage the time management I think I just need
to set the schedule for my students. For example this week we are going to have
an offline class, so I am going to set the schedule especially in the Google
classroom, right? So we can set the schedule when will we deliver the material,
we can set the schedule. I think the technology has helped us to make us have a
good time management.

Mr. Septian : So, pandemic is not a reason for us to stop learning, right? Because online and
now we have blended learning the combination, it’s really effective to the
students, right? Anything you want to say more, Mr?

Mr. Zulkarnaen : Yeah, I think what I can say now for the students, I think the blended learning
is one of the most effective way for you to study because when you are studying
a lot means that you are trying to explore what you have in the material so for
example, if you do not or still confuse about the material you can just find it on
Google by yourselves and after that when you have offline class, you can just
make a clarification to the teacher, is that true this material? For example, I have
found this material on another said, what do you think about this one? So when
we are having an offline class, so it will be an interaction for the students and the
teacher. So I think, what I can say for the students is blended learning now is
really effective for you but just need to adapt to the technology.

Mr. Septian : Technology, because it is online learning, you can do the research, right? They
can do research in Google, when it is offline learning, they can ask the teacher
directly. More communicative of course. I think that’s all, Mr. Thank you for
