Ph.D.

PROGRAMMES AT LPU

1. INTRODUCTION

University has a mission to produce high quality scholars having strong base of principles
and methods, deep understanding of their area of specialization and dare to handle new
challenges faced by industries and society. Ph.D. Programmes are designed to impart
knowledge and consolidate concepts and intellectual skills through course work, seminars,
projects and thesis work thus enable aspirants/candidates to become capable of helping
industry, education sector and society at large to solve the problems being faced.

2. ELIGIBILTY

Master's degree in a relevant discipline with 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent
grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7-point scale. A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an
equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy
layer) / differently-abled.

3. ADMISSION PROCESSES

3.1 Admission in Ph.D. Programme will be made through LPUNEST (Entrance Test) followed
by interview. Date for entrance test will be announced on university website.
3.2 Students qualifying in written test will be called for interview (Detailed Schedule of an
Interview after result of written test will be communicated). Applicants who qualify UGC
(NET/JRF/SPM)/ CSIR (NET/JRF/SPM) / ICAR (NET/JRF/SRF) examination / SLET
(Punjab state only)/ Valid GATE or GPAT score card, Teacher Fellowship holder or
passed M.Phil. Programme (in Regular mode only) are exempted from Ph.D. entrance test.

Note:- 1) Exemption will be considered only if the result score is still valid. For
Example: A student might have qualified GATE but the validity of the score is till
2020. So he can’t use this GATE score for admission in 2021 session.

2) For Getting the LPU Scholarship it is mandatory to appear and score good marks
in the LPUNEST).

3.3. Test Pattern for Ph.D. entrance examination:


The written test will consist of two parts (Table 1). Both the parts will be objective (MCQ
based) and will be based on syllabus of UGC NET/ CSIR/ GATE/GPAT.
Part-I: This part will be of general nature, intended to assess the teaching aptitude,
research aptitude, reading comprehension, communication, reasoning (including
mathematical), logical reasoning, data interpretation, information and communication

technology (ICT), people and environment, higher education system: governance polity
and administration .

Part-II will be based on the subject selected by the candidate.

3.4 Weightage of Entrance Test and Interview


The final selection for admission in Ph.D. will be based on the performance in Entrance
Test (70% weightage) and Interview (30% weightage) subject to scoring minimum marks
in the Interview. However if any candidate has taken exemption from LPUNEST (Ph.D.)
entrance test, then 100% weightage will be given to Interview only.

4. Ph.D. COURSE WORK

4.1. Course work is mandatory for all the students admitted in Ph.D. Programme.

4.2. The course work will have a minimum of 08 credits.


4.3. All candidates admitted to the Ph.D. programme will be required to complete the course
work prescribed by the university during the initial one or two semesters.
4.4. The course work shall consist of the following three courses:

Course I: Foundations of Research and Publication Ethics


Course II: Research Methodology
Course III: Research Writing and Presentation
4.5. Min. 75% Aggregate attendance is mandatory in the course work.

4.6. The evaluation parameters will be similar to that of regular programmes of the university.

4.7 The minimum passing marks required in course work of Ph.D. programme is 55% in the
individual courses.

4.8 Exemption in course work will be applicable only if student has done M.Phil. with 55% or
equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7-point scale through regular mode from LPU or any
another university.

4.9 Selected Student will have option to pursue course work in one of the following modes:

i) Coursework options for non-agriculture programmes

 Option I: 15 Weeks on Weekends basis from August- November 2021

 Option II: 4 days* every month (September - December 2021) [*Preferably every
second week (Thursday-Sunday)]

 Option III: 15 days continuous in the month November/December 2021

The contact hours in all these three options will remain same. If number of students in any
option is less than 10, then the option may not be offered.

ii) Coursework option for agriculture programmes

 Option I: 15 Weeks from August- November 2021

 Option II:- Not Applicable

 Option III will be available only for Research associates/ Scientists who are
working in Defense Labs/ICAR/ICMR/COE’s/DRDO/CSIR/Space-Atomic Centers

5. DURATION:
Ph.D. programme will be of minimum 3 year’s duration and of maximum 6 years from date
of admission. The women candidates and persons with disability (more than 40%
disability) may be allowed a relaxation of two years for Ph.D. in the maximum duration. In
addition, the women candidates may be provided Maternity Leave/Child Care Leave once
in the entire duration of Ph.D. for up to 240 days.

6. ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENT DURING THE PROGRAMME (After Course


Work):

6.1 For Full Time Scholar: Every full time scholar is required to mark his/her attendance on
all working days on regular basis (6 hours stay in a day and any 5 days in a week from
Monday to Saturday). The scholar is expected to fulfill attendance in terms of days and
contact hours as per the details given below:

If a scholar doesn’t meet requirement of minimum 75% attendance in a semester, he/she will
not be allowed to appear in upcoming activity and marked ABSENT. A male / female student

shall be eligible for paternity leave (15 days) / maternity / child care leaves (240 days)
respectively as per government of India rules during their entire Ph.D. duration.

For Part Time Scholars: Every part time scholar is required to mark his/her attendance in the
university for at least 2 days in a month (minimum 12 hours/month) by physically visiting
to the supervisor and meet his/her Ph.D. supervisor to discuss research work. The scholar is
expected to fulfill attendance in terms of days and contact hours as per the details given below:

In case, scholar is not able to visit University physically in any of the month then he/she
has to meet the attendance requirement of 15 days in one go or in more spells in a
semester and 30 days in a year so as to appear in the upcoming activity. Scholar would
not be allowed to appear in the upcoming activity if he/she does not fulfill the
attendance requirement in that particular semester/term.

7. SCHOLARSHIPS/FELLOWSHIPS AVAILABLE IN Ph.D. PROGRAMMES:

7.1 Students can avail the following scholarships:

III. LPU Teaching Fellowship (During Ph.D.)

7.2 Time Duration of Scholarship/Fellowship:

I. LPUNEST Scholarship (For Minimum duration of the Programme i.e. 3 years)

III. LPU Teaching Fellowship (Upto 3 years subjected to successful completion of yearly review
process)

7.3 Eligibility:
7.3.1 LPUNEST scholarship will be given on the performance of students in the entrance test
(subject to qualifying interview conducted by the University for the Admission).
7.3.2 Scholarship on the basis of National Eligibility Tests
(SPM/JRF/NET(LS)/GATE/GPAT) will be given on the basis of performance in these
tests.
7.3.3 For teaching fellowship, candidate should be a full time PhD scholar of Lovely
Professional University with good communication skills. Preference will be given to
NET/GATE/GPAT qualified candidates, students from premier institutes and to those
having previous teaching and research experience.

7.4. Details of Teaching Fellowship

Fellowship Selection Process:


After completion of course work, scholar will submit application in prescribed format to Centre for
Research Degree Programmes with copy of his/her resume. The list of the candidates will be
submitted to the HR for further processing.

Duration of Fellowship:
Upto 3 years (subject to successful completion of yearly review process).

Details of Fellowship:
1. The teaching fellowship awardee will be paid an honorarium of Rs. 15,600/ per month
(Consolidated).
2. The scholar is required to take teaching load of minimum six credits with the possibility of: 6 L
or (3 L + 6 P) or (3 L + 6 T) or (6 P + 6 T) or (12P / 12 T) subjected to maximum nine hours.

Research Targets during the tenure of fellowship:


1. The scholar is availing teaching fellowship will be required to complete his/her Ph.D. course
work and must clear SOTA within the first year of fellowship.
2. In second year of fellowship, he/she has to publish minimum one paper in Scopus/WoS
indexed Journal or have to present at least one paper in conferences /seminar (Scopus/
WoS indexed).
3. In the third year of fellowship, Scholar has to publish another paper indexed in Scopus/WoS

Journals and have to present at least one paper in conference / seminar (Scopus/WoS indexed).

8 Other Financial Assistance

1. LPU Contingency for Ph.D. Support: Ph.D. scholars may be given financial support for
purchasing of consumables, glasswares, equipments, softwares and contingency for analysis
up to a certain fixed amount required to carry out their research work subject to approval.

2. Incentives for publications: The University is committed to innovative research and


encourages its research scholars by giving Incentives to them in their research endeavours.
Our research scholars are encouraged to publish their research work in journals of repute
indexed in WoS/Scopus and provide them the research incentives as per University Policy
