Only trained and instructed persons should operate and work near this equipment. Responsibilities for
installation, use, setting up, maintenance and repair of this equipment should be clearly defined.

2.4 Dangers in the use of this Reflow System

☛ This Reflow Soldering System must not be used unsupervised.
☛ During its use the equipment will heat up - Danger of burning or combustion!
☛ Please do not touch the inside of the drawer unit - Please note that within the drawer unit parts can
reach high temperatures!
☛ Protective gloves ought to be provided to enable the removal of hot PCBs from the supports.
☛ Nothing should be placed on top of the equipment, as it could get hot.

2.4.1 Safety Precautions in Normal Use

☛ Please do not use this equipment while any of its safety features are defective.
☛ Before switching on the equipment please ensure that nothing has been placed in front of the unit,
as any such object could be pushed off the table or/and might impede the movement of the drawer
unit.

3 Reflow Systems RO 160/250

3.1 Installation
☛ After unpacking the equipment should be placed on a firm table.
☛ Please note the space requirement for the Drawer Unit movements.
☛ The mains plug should be plugged into a 230V / 16A supply.

3.2 Description of Functions

At the heart of the Reflow Soldering System is the convection heating chamber. A PCB to be soldered
is transported in and out of the chamber by the drawer unit. Repositionable supports locate the PCB.
The entire process is controlled by a microprocessor. Operator input is from the integrated key pad
and an LCD display indicates the current state of the machine.

3.3 Technical Details

Approximate Dimensions (in mm): Width 590 Height 260 Depth 460
Required Table Space: approx. 600 x 700 mm
Mass: approx. 30 kg
Supply Voltage: 230 V
Power Requirement: 3500 W
Pcb size: 350 x 250 mm max.

Communication (optional)
The system is equipped with a D-SUB (9-pin) connector for serial communication (RS 232).
This communication channel is designated for uploading new firmware.

Nitrogen Connection

Nitrogen can be connected at the rear of the machine. Provision is made for a common compressed
air hose with 4mm ID (PK4). The connector is supplied with a nut, which is intended to be removed,
slid over the hose, replaced and hand tightened after pushing the hose unto the connector.

The nitrogen supply line should include a regulator, set to between 1.5 and 2.0 bar
(0,15 - 0,2 Mpasc.

Please do not exceed the upper pressure limit of 2 bar.

3.4 Principle of Soldering

[°C] S-Temp S-Time

P-Temp P-Time

[sec]

Common PCB Materials do not exhibit very good heat conductance. In order for a populated PCB to
be brought to the required temperature from ambient an appropriate pre heat temperature (P-Temp) is
needed. Uniform heating of the substrate and the solder joints to just below the soldering temperature
is ensured by dwelling at the pre heat temperature for the pre heat time (P-Time). Only then is the
assembly taken up to the soldering temperature,
Depending on the type of solder paste used its active flux contents is most effective in the
temperature range 120 - 160 ºC.

☛ the melting point of the solder must be reached with confidence

☛ thermal loading of the components should be kept to a minimum

The entire PCB assembly has to reach the soldering temperature, which depends on the type of
solder paste used.
To ensure satisfactory soldering the melting point of the solder (183 ºC for eutectic solder) must be
reached and maintained for a short time. Often, a PCB temperature of 200 ºC is aimed at (S-Temp).
The soldering time (S-Time) should be kept as short as possible.

4 Operation

4.1 Operating and Indicating Elements

Observation Window

Display

Mains Cable
Mains Switch
Drawer Key Pad

The mains switch is used to switch the reflow system on or off. By flicking the switch up the system
is switched on.

4.2 Key Pad

The key pad is used for all entries for programming and operation.

Identification of individual keys:

1 - 0: Input of numbers
A: Start
B: Confirmation (Enter)
C: End, shortening of Soldering Time (Esc)
D: Drawer open / close
E: Edit
F: Extending of Soldering Time

They key pad is protected against accidental operation; ie the keys must be deliberate
pressed (approximately 1 second). The Escape (C) key requires roughly twice that time
to react.

4.3 Display and User Inputs

All operator inputs and relevant data for the operation are displayed on the two line display. A
continuously changing symbol in the lower right hand corner of the display indicates that the system is
operational.

After the mains switch at the rear of the unit is switched on the following display appears:
Product data can now be entered. This requires the entry of a 4 - digit
PRODUCT NR #### number on the key pad.
0001 - 9999 *

Soldering programmes can have any number from 0001 to 9000.

Numbers 9001 to 9999 are reserved for special cases, such as adhesive curing. Soldering
Temperatures and Times need not be entered in these cases.

Input is confirmed with B or can be modified before confirmation.

PRODUCT NR ####
NR OK→B EDIT→ E*

When a pre existing product number is entered the previously stored data is then displayed.
All data can be modified by over writing or by new entries.
The desired values are in each case confirmed by B.

P-TEMP → ###CELS
MAX 240 * The desired value for the Pre Heat Temperature (P-TEMP) is
entered (degree Centigrade).

P-TIME → ###SEC The next input relates to the Pre Heat Time (P-TIME).
MAX 3600 *

S-TEMP → ###CELS This input determines the Soldering Temperature (S-TEMP).

MAX 240 *

Soldering Time (S-TIME) in seconds. This value can later be

extended (key F) or shortened (key C).
MAX 99 *

P-TEMP → ###CELS When a larger than permitted MAX value is entered the display
MAX 240 ERROR * shows ‘‘ERROR’’ and needs to be re entered.

After entering all the values they are shown on the lower line of the display.

(P-temp/P-time)

When all inputs are correct pressing key A (Start) will start the soldering process.
Key E (Edit) is used for modifying a parameter.

When the temperature within the heating chamber is below 50 ºC the

programme will start.
During the running of a programme it can be interrupted at any time by pressing key
C (Esc) or D (Drawer).

ACT-TEMP 037CELS
PREHEATING *

ACT-TEMP 180CELS As soon as the pre heat temperature has been reached the
P-TIME 090SEC * programmed P-time starts counting down and the remaining time
shows on the display.

ACT-TEMP 190CELS
SOLDERING * The soldering phase is shown similarly.

ACT-TEMP 210CELS The set soldering time can be extended by pressing and holding key
S-TIME 16SEC * F or terminated with key C. The modified time thus established is
then automatically stored against the current product number.
Examples of possible displays

At the end of the soldering time the heating switches off and the drawer opens. The
soldered PCB can then be removed.

The next PCB can be placed in the drawer unit. The following
START →A EDIT →E response can appear on pressing key A: In this case the system
TEMP > 50CELS * will start automatically when the temperature inside the process
chamber falls below 50 ºC.

4.4 Printed Circuit Board

While the machine is switched on, pressing key D opens the drawer unit. The
PCB holders are equipped with magnetic bases, which allows them to be Support for PCB
positioned anywhere on the drawer support surface.
These holders can support PCBs without thermally affecting them and while
ensuring free air circulation and uniform heating.
Holders are placed to suit individual PCB sizes and shapes.

5 Maintenance

Important !
☛ Any work within the process chamber should only be carried after allowing it to
cool down.
☛ Flammable cleaning materials must not be used on, in or near this reflow
system.

This reflow system does not need any routine servicing. The machine housing can be wiped with a
damp cloth. Should the observation window become coated with condensed solder fumes, it can be
cleaned carefully with a cloth soaked with alcohol. For this procedure the drawer unit should be fully
open, the oven completely cooled down and switched off.
