PILOSOPHY OF TEFL

Meeting X 2021

Question :

Part A
1. What are the principle of philosophy of TEFL? Elaborate your own answer by relating

with some perspectives.

Answer :

1. The voice of the language is preferred in teaching because spoken words, phrases, uttarances,
stresses, rhythms, pauses and intonations must be entered immediately.

2. A grammatical system is given to reinforce meaning. To do this students must learn "forms" and
archetypes thoroughly in different situations, learn word classes, lexical combinations such as use of
auxelary verbs, acquire new habits, use language, and familiarize students with native culture.

2. What is your philosophy of TEFL in Indonesian context?

Answer :

Filosofi saya tentang Telf ialah, Mengajar Bahasa Inggris sebagai Bahasa Asing, atau TEFL, seperti
yang paling sering disebut, melibatkan pengajaran bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing di negara-
negara yang tidak menggunakan bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa utama.

3. Mention the best way of Teaching English as a Foreign Language in Indonesia?

Answer :

 Grammar Translation Method (GTM)

This method is the oldest method in the world of foreign language learning. The method
emphasizes more on grammar or grammar. In addition to grammar, there is also a translation that is
used to teach vocabulary. The teacher will teach material about grammar using formulas, then use
translation when teaching reading, writing, and vocabulary in English.

 Audio Lingual Method

Audio Lingual Method is one method that is believed to be effective for making students learn
English quickly. Students are taught a language like they were in infancy. The trick is that the
teacher practices a short dialogue, one of which means that the students have not been able to
translate it. The teacher gives instructions to the students to follow the dialogue and then the
students guess the meaning of the dialogue from the expressions, poses, and various things that are
practiced by the teacher.

 Silent Way

Silent Way is actually a method of learning mathematics by Celeb Cattegno. However, this method
becomes a powerful method when applied to learning English. A teacher uses rods as a medium to
teach many things, especially about speaking and grammar in English. Rods come in different colors
and lengths.

 Total Physical Response

This method is carried out by the teacher doing some work, for example walking, sitting, putting
books, holding objects, or writing. But before the teacher carries out these tasks, he instructs
himself first with instructions in a foreign language.

Part B
1.Define the meaning of teaching, technique, syllabus, prodeure and method in TEFL!

Answer :

Teaching

“TEFL” is the acronym for Teaching English as a Foreign Language or, simply put, English language
instruction for non-native speakers. It is also commonly known as Teaching English to Speakers of
Other Languages

Technique

Implementing a procedure necessitates certain practices and behaviors that operate in teaching a
language according to a particular method. These practices and behaviors are the techniques that
every procedure relies on. Techniques, in this sense, are part and parcel of procedures. They are the
actual moment-to-moment classroom steps that lead to a specified outcome. Every procedure is
realized through a series of techniques. They could take the form of an exercise or just any activity
that you have to do to complete a task. For instance, when using videos, teachers often use a
technique called “silent viewing” which consists of playing the video without sound and asking
students to figure out what the characters were saying.
Syllabus

The syllabus of a course is the frame of what the course is. It tells the students and the teacher what
is being taught in the course as well as in what order it is being taught. This is especially true in
language learning, as different types of syllabi will indicate what is being learned. There are many
types of syllabi for language learning.

Procedures

Jeremy Harmer (2001) describes ‘procedures’ as “an ordered set of techniques.” They are the step-
by-step measures to execute a method. A common procedure in the grammar-translation method,
for example, is to start by explaining the grammar rules and exemplifying these rules through
sentences that the students then had to translate into their mother tongue. According to Harmer, a
procedure is “smaller than a method and larger than a technique.”

Method

A method is a practical implementation of an approach. A theory is put into practice at the level a
method. It includes decisions about:

 The particular skills to be taught,

 The roles of the teacher and the learner in language teaching and learning,
 The appropriate procedures and techniques,
 The content to be taught,
 And the order in which the content will be presented.

It also involves a specific syllabus organization, choices of the materials that will boost learning, and
the means to assess learners and evaluate teaching and learning. It is a sort of an organizing plan
that relies on the philosophical premises of an approach.

2.Write down and explain the kinds of teaching methods in English skills (Reading, Speaking,

Writing and Listening)!

Answer :

Reading

Reading is a skill in understanding. Reading can help us develop all parts of language, such as
vocabulary, spelling, language or sentence structure, and writing.Reading can improve language
intuition in an appropriate way. When we read, the brain tries to digest information and imitate it,
then the information will be stored and on other occasions, this information can be used for
speaking and writing.
Speaking

Language is a tool for communication. We communicate with others, express our ideas, and also
understand other people's ideas.

Therefore, communication tools will function optimally when the factors that support their
productive skills are mastered.

Speaking skills are needed to be able to express ideas or ideas that exist in us. The idea or idea is
not only conveyed, but can be clearly digested by the recipient of the information.

Writing

One of the last 4 language skills is writing. Writing is an activity of documenting information into a
written means. With the development of social media, almost everyone writes about their activities
as a form of self-expression.Undoubtedly, writing skills are now seen as the most important
language skills to be mastered.

Good writing is writing that is easy to digest through the use of simple, effective, and efficient
sentences. When someone can easily understand the subject matter of a piece of writing, then the
writing can be considered good because it is written skillfully. Writing skills cannot grow alone
without mastering other language skills.

Listening

Listening or listening is a language skill to be able to focus and digest the existing information.

Someone often has difficulty honing this language skill because someone is required to understand
the essence of the conversation, not just knowing every word.Listeners or listeners must focus on a
conversation. Listening or listening language skills can be practiced at any time.In everyday life,
speaker topics and visual codes can help us digest messages.

To practice this language skill, we can often listen or listen to discussions and talks brought by
people with different backgrounds from ours. The more we focus on listening and the more diverse
the background of the speaker, the more our language skills in listening or listening can be honed.

Indonesian language learning activities, speaking practice must also be experienced by students
in other lessons, therefore there needs to be coordination between Indonesian language
teachers and teachers in other fields of study, in terms of giving students the opportunity to
practice speaking to students so that students actively practice speaking in English. a proper
communication.
