PRINCIPLES OF ART

1. Rhythm refers to the movement or action for a certain design. Repetition of lines, shapes and
colors creates visual movement for the viewer’s eye to follow.

Architecturally, the choir (Anglican alt. spelling

quire) is the area of a church or cathedral that provides
seating for the clergy and choir. It is usually in the
eastern part of the chancel between the nave and
the sanctuary (which houses the altar). The choir is
occassionally located in the western part of the nave,
CHOIR STALLS, CATHEDRAL OF LIMA, PERU by
usually when geographical conditions do not permit
PEDRO DE NOGUERA an altar facing the East.

2. Balance refers on how the different elements of art correlated to each other. Symmetrical,
Asymmetrical and Radial are the different types of balance. Symmetrical balance is shown if two
sides of artwork are identical.
Asymmetrical is shown if two sides of the art-
work are different but have equal visual weight. Radial
balance is shown if the three equal parts of an artwork
radiate at the center.
The artwork is still balanced. For example, in
the painting “The Incredulity of Saint Thomas” by
Caravaggio, the three men are balanced with Jesus
on the left. Jesus is facing forward and in brighter light
which balances out the three men in shadow.
THE INCREDULITY OF SAINT THOMAS (CARAVAGGIO)

as_%28Caravaggio%29

3. Emphasis refers to visual element that gives more

attention to a certain portion of the artwork.

The huge altarpiece that is painted for Siena

Cathedral, the artist still has on foot stuck in the flat
frontal conventions of Byzantine composition. The
other tries to free itself through the greater naturalism
of the figures, as they turn to focus on the Christ Child
o, in few distracted cases, on one another.

duccio.html

8
4. Proportion refers to two or more elements put together in a painting. It is the
relationship of size between the parts and the whole. An artist uses proportion to convey a sense
of space of depth, and for emphasis.

The Creation of Adam (Creazione di Adamo) is

a fresco painting by Italian artist Michelangelo, which
forms part of the Sistine Chapel’s ceiling, painted c.1508-
1512. In the 15th century, Michelangelo organized his
compositions with help geometry.

5. Harmony refers on how well the different elements work together in a specific artwork.
All elements used in an artwork must be harmonized with each other. Harmony often involves
the use of similar elements with slight variations.

Caravaggio was a master at using shadow

and light to heighten the dramas and meaning of his
painting. Here, God’s light has knocked Saul of his
horse, and his arms are stretched out in panel shape
to accept the light. Meanwhile, the man and the horse,
who symbolize the ordinary earthly world and are
not privy to the full experience, are deep in shadow.

6. Variety in artwork is shown if a specific artwork uses the different visual elements. It
refers to the differences of qualities, found in a work of art that composed of thickness of lines,
sizes of objects and colors used.
Michelangelo is given credit for designing St.
Peter’s Basilica. Michelangelo’s chief contribution was
the use of symmetrical plan of a Greek Cross form and
an external masonry of massive proportions, with every
corner filled in by a stairwell or small vestry. The effect
is of contiuous wall surface that is folded or fractured
at different angles, lacking the right angles that usually
define change of directions at corners of a building. This
exterior is surrounded by a giant order of Corinthian
pilasters all set at slightly different angles to each other,
in keeping with the ever-changing angles of a wall’s
surface. Above them the huge cornice ripples in a
