Profile: Skilled Microsoft Power BI and Microsoft SQL Server professional.
Over 30 years solid experience of installation, configuration, administration, support, troubleshooting, operations, design
and delivery in both production and development environments, predominantly with ‘blue-chip’ organisations. I perform
well operating under my own initiative and as a team player.
Much of my experience has been with IBM on various accounts. My role was typically as database administrator and
advisory working on many projects, often in parallel for different corporate customers. I have been assigned to projects
varying from simple SQL Server installs through to solution proposals and costing. All projects have a strong emphasis on
system security, they are customer facing and involve liaison with teams in global locations.
Over recent years I’ve got experience of SQL Server on Cloud technology including Microsoft Azure, AWS and IBM
Cloud.

Senior DBA in the team with the responsibility for the management of over 100 databases in the production,
development and test environments. The environments included Sybase 11.9.2 on eight Hewlett Packard HP-UX
machines with a total of eight ASE Servers, five Replication Servers (Version 11.5) and seven Sybase IQ servers
(Version 12.4.*). Sybase 11.5 ASE servers on IBM AIX machines and Microsoft SQL Servers on Windows NT. The
UNIX scheduling was managed by cron (and a toolset developed in-house to manage task dependencies and parallel
processing). The data was selectively replicated worldwide and managed using warm standbys or function strings in
conjunction with bit wise operations. There were six distinct Sybase MI systems and these were “built” with a differing
frequency of daily, weekly and monthly builds.

Sybase / Microsoft SQL Server Contract - Royal & Sun Alliance (Liverpool) Aug. 1997 – March
DBA 2002
Same as previously mentioned with R&SA, before R&SA outsourced to IBM. I was not the senior DBA during this
time. The main application was originally a 24x7 operation, but this was rationalised by removing servers in Australia
and North America. This involved using Replication Server to transfer data to existing databases. Responsible for the
implementation of the Disaster Recovery process as well as being heavily involved during the design process. Main
contact for the Sybase tools and system monitoring suite to run on HP-UX and AIX.

Report Writer / Sybase DBA Contract - KPMG Health Systems Jan. 1997– July 1997
(Manchester)
Member of a report writing team. Reports were written to execute on both Sybase and Oracle databases. Skills
transfer took place to permanent members of staff. Whilst working with the Sybase DBA team, we visited Great
Ormond Street Hospital to identify database application performance issues, using Cyrano Workbench.

Microsoft SQL Server DBA Contract - Funding Agency for Schools (York) March 1996 - July 1996
This role was the same as previously mentioned for Funding Agency for Schools.

Sybase Trainer Contract - ATI Alarm Systems (Manchester) February 1996

Training to existing Sybase DBA and developers to fine tune their development and administration process.

Report Writer Contract - Bell Cablemedia (Leeds) Oct. 1995 - Jan. 1996
This role was the same as previously mentioned for Bell Cablemedia.

Employment History
Sybase DBA / Programmer Catlin Underwriting Agency (London) April 1993 – Sept. 1995
(Lloyd's of London syndicate)
DBA and Application/Report developer. The team looked after Sybase 4.9.2 Servers on Hewlett Packard HP-UX
machines. The front-end to the claims system was originally written in JYACC Jam and then we redesigned and
improved it to run using Visual Basic and Microsoft Toolkit (rather than ODBC). Many ad hoc requests from “claims”
team meant writing SQL was well practiced. Frequently requested reports were originally written using SQR and then
Crystal Reports. User support included PC configuration & network administration (Novell training undertaken).

Programmer / DBA Bull Information Systems (London) Sept. 1991 - April 1993
PC Database developer using FoxPro and Clipper creating applications to help the account managers manage and
report on their team of engineers. This progressed to becoming an Informix DBA managing data to track the
hardware used on the customer sites. This was complimented by UNIX hardware administration training.
