THE BLIND MEN AND THE ELEPHANT

John Godfrey Saxe's ( 1816-1887) version of the famous Indian legend

(simplified for learners of English)

It was six men of Indostan

To learning much inclined, There were 6 men of Hindustan__ a) 15-16 세기에 번영한
Who went to see the

Who went to see an Elephant
(Though all of them were
blind),

That each by observation

The First approach'd the

Elephant,
And happening to fall
Might satisfy__ his mind
Against his broad and
sturdy side,

"God bless me! but the 지르다

Against the big and gray and sturdy_ side.
Is very like a wall!"

The Second, feeling of the

tusk, He started at once to bawl__:
Cried, -"Ho! what have we
here
“God bless me! But this Elephant
So very round and smooth
and sharp?
Is very like a wall!”
To me 'tis mighty clear
This wonder of an h) 불가사의

And cried “What have we here, j) 투창
The Third approached the

And happening to take
The squirming trunk To me, it’s very clear
within his hands,
Thus boldly up and spake:
This wonder__ of an Elephant
"I see," quoth he, "the
Elephant
Is very like a spear__!”
Is very like a snake!"

Indostan
Disputed loud and long,
Said, “Even the blindest man g) 경이
Each in his own opinion
Exceeding stiff and strong,
Can tell what this is like the most – h) 쥘부채

Though each was partly in (You might argue if you can) i)
the right, j) 운에 맡기다
And all were in the wrong! This marvel__ of an Elephant
MORAL. Is very like a fan__!”
So oft in theologic wars,
The disputants, I ween, The sixth soon also did begin

Rail on in utter ignorance
About the beast to grope__,
Of what each other mean, l) 꼬리
And prate about an
Elephant
Then, grabbing__ the long tail__ m) 붙잡다
Not one of them has seen! That swung within his scope__, n) 더듬다

And, so, these men of Hindustan

Argued__ loud and long, p) 딱딱한, 경직된

Each kept to his opinion__ r) 의견

And all were in the wrong!

We each do shout in ignorance__
Of what the others mean__
And we talk about an Elephant
Which none of us has seen!
