THE BLIND MEN AND THE ELEPHANT

John Godfrey Saxe's ( 1816-1887) version of the famous Indian legend


(simplified for learners of English)

It was six men of Indostan


To learning much inclined, There were 6 men of Hindustan__ a) 15-16 세기에 번영한

The Second, feeling of the

"I see," quoth he, "the

Is very like a snake!"

So oft in theologic wars,
The disputants, I ween, The sixth soon also did begin

Rail on in utter ignorance
About the beast to grope__,

And, so, these men of Hindustan

We each do shout in ignorance__
Of what the others mean__
And we talk about an Elephant
Which none of us has seen!
