List the person(s) who will approve the project charter
Short description of the need for the project. The why. What is the
driver for the project.
What are you no-kidding going to do? In general terms, what work must
be accomplished by this team in order for the need to achieve the
desired outcome that meets the need? It might be a good idea in
certain circumstances to also clarify what work will not be addressed
(because sometimes other teams might be accomplishing those
portions). This will be supplemented by the WBS artifact
This is what done looks like. This describes the desired outcome the
team is charged to create. This section is supplemented by the WBS and
IMP artifacts
When does the team start and finish (dates)? This section is
supplemented by the project schedule artifacts, the IMP and IMS
List the stakeholders invovled with the project. This does not have to
be extensive, but those that are most impacted or influencial to the
project being initiated. This section is supplemented by the
Stakeholder Engagement artifact
No project is an island. List who the project team will need to interface
with to accomplish the scope. This seciton is supplemented by the
Stakeholder Engagement artifact
Take the time up front to make sure your team is prepared for
potentially challenging conversations and circumstances. Not all of this
need be written down in the charter, but your team ought to talk about
the following and summarize the results:
1. How will your team establish and maintain mutual trust – especially
in terms of vulnerability -- among the members?
2. How will you stay outcome (versus problem) focused?
3. There will invariably be a diversity of viewpoints, which is a good
thing. How will you be respectful of others’ views?
4. How will you balance action and inquiry? There are times for both,
especially the latter.
5. How will your team promote routine and respectful challenging of
own and others’ assumptions?
6. What does it look like on your team to assume innocent intent of
others?
7. What simple rules will govern the conduct of team meetings? Think
especially in terms of simple rules that reinforce your teams rules of
engagement
8. How will you hold each other accountable when it comes to
delivering on promises and/or adhering to team rules of engagement?
9. How will conflicts be resolved? 10. How will
you maintain The Empowerment Dynamic (TED*) and stay out of a
Dreaded Drama Triangle (DDT)
List the resources that will be provided to execute the project, such as
infrastructure, contracts, material, etc. The section is supplemented by
the RAM/RACI artifact
List the members of the core team that will be instrument in exeucting
the project. Do not list members from other projects or functional
organization which the project might coordiante or inform. This
section will be supplemnted by the RAM/RACI artifact
List any other information that might be needed to obtain approal of
the project
