unicameral Turkish legislature. It is the sole body given the legislative prerogatives by


the Turkish Constitution. It was founded in Ankara on 23 April 1920 in the midst of the National
Campaign. 

1 Election of speaker
The election of the Speaker is held twice within a legislative term. The term of office of the Speaker, who
is elected at the beginning of the legislative term, is two years.

In the first two ballots, two-thirds of the total number of deputies, and in the third ballot, an absolute
majority of the total number of deputies are required

2 Composition
There are 600 members of parliament (deputies) who are elected for a five-year term

selected on the basis of proportional representation For example, if a party wins one-third of the
votes then it should gain about one-third of the seats.

3 Powers
make law, to review the executive organ

to give to the Council of Ministers the authority to issue decisions having the
force of law, to evaluate the convenience of the confirming of international
contracts, and to elect the President (Art. 87, 101).
