Raja Ram Mohan Roy was born in Radhanagar, Hoogly, Bengal on 14th August 1774 and died on
27th September 1833 at the age of 61. The title 'Raja' was given to him by the Mughal Emperor. He
went to England as an ambassador of the Mughal emperor Akbar. Raja Mohan Roy was the first
educated Indian to travel to England. He was an Indian religious, social and educational reformer.
He knew English, Bengali, Persian, Arabic, Greek and Latin.
Roy’s historic letter to Lord Amherst in 1823 marked the beginning of modern English
education in India.
Role in media -
In 1821, he started the first Bengali language newspaper, which was called Sambad Koumudi. It
advocated for a balanced and positive reading habit.
Raja Ram Mohan was a great champion of the freedom of the Press. He published newspapers in
English, Bengali and Persian for the purpose of creating mass consciousness. Besides being a great
social reformer he also made a valuable contribution to Bengali literature.
In the Prospectus of the Mirat-ul-Akhbar, published in the first issue of the weekly, Ram Mohan
wrote that the object of the paper was not to shower praises upon its promoters or his well-wishers
or to scandalize anybody.
In all his publications Ram Mohan emphasized the important of subjects having educational value,
besides those on politics and theology.
Contribution To The Society-
°Religious reforms:
● Raja Ram Mohan Roy’s first published work Tuhfat-ul-Muwahhiddin published in 1803
exposed irrational religious beliefs and corrupt practices of the Hindus as the belief in
revelations, prophets, miracles etc.
● In 1814, he founded Atmiya Sabha in Calcutta to campaign against idolatry, caste rigidities,
meaningless rituals and other social ills.
°Social reforms:
● Raja Ram Mohan Roy conceived reformist religious associations as instruments of social and
political transformation.
● He founded the Atmiya Sabha in 1815, the Calcutta Unitarian Association in 1821, and the
Brahmo Sabha in 1828 which later became the Brahmo Samaj.
● He campaigned against the caste system, untouchability, superstitions and use of intoxicants.
Contribution to The Society-
Raja Ram Mohan Roy was one of the best social reformers in the Bengal region at the late 18th
century, when our country was the roughly ruled by the Britishers.
He had done many things about social reformation at that time, including women education and
women empowerment.
1)the stereotypical mindset of the people at that time was the main hindrance for his work
2) British Governing system was not interested in the Indian social reformation
3)lack of proper education in the India at that time also started ruining his works

My opinion on Raja rammohan Roy he is great personality And I like the way of thinking of him
because , if you try something against the society then you have courage to it and he knows about
difficulty he gonna faced by the people of society. He try to abolish sati pratha and many more
rituals malpractice of Hindus
And I find reading of early life the Reason to abolish sati pratha he
See his Sister in law burning after the death of his Brother because of sati pratha and decided to
Stop this kind practice of the society.
Roy did actually great work and become inspiration of the youth
And great work like.
