Opening/Introduction Activity
Welcome song

Sing the welcome song and play the piano with octaves. The students should stand up and do
this at their seats.

Learning Opportunities/Procedure:
Leaves are falling down
https://musicplayonline.com/songs/falling-leaves__trashed/

Teach the students this song through echo. Use motions to model the melodic contour of the
piece. Have one student pass out hand sanitize as you pass out scarves behind them. Do the
song with the motions and the accompaniment above.

5 Little Pumpkins

As you collect the scarves, teach the students this song through echo. At the end of the song, put
on this video and challenge them to do movements along.

2nd Grade will be singing in the winter concert, but everyone needs to know the music! We
teach a little chunk of our winter songs each class to help us in the long run. Before class,
learn the song. You will only be teaching them the bridge today. The audio is available on
Google Classroom. Put the lyrics on the screen and freeze it. Teach them the bridge through
echo singing and then sing through it from the beginning. You can make little motions to
make it more fun.

Rhythm practice
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8GarwkvML0

Tell the students that they are going to practice reading Ta’s and Ti Ti’s. Put on this video.
Make sure they are clapping and saying the correct rhythm and syllable. I use a little frog fly
swatter to follow along with them and make it more fun. Only do about 4-5 of the rhythms
because there is a lot of repetition, and you don’t want to take up too much time.

The Beaver Song

song/

Teach the students the ch,ch,ch,ch part of the song. They are in charge of that the first time.
The second time, have them try to sing it with the words. You can put the lyrics on the board
if that makes things easier for them! Look up a camp video and follow their motions or
create your own to this action song.

Closing Activity
Pumpkin Rhythm
https://www.pinterest.com/pin/150166968803310174/

Last week, 2nd grade learned a pumpkin song. You are going to do a very similar activity to
pass the pumpkin. The students will still pass the pumpkin around and sing the song.
However, when it gets to “Boo!” that person will pick out four of the rhythm cards and give
them to the teacher. The teacher will put them on a music stand and go through the random
rhythm with the class. If they are fast learners, you can go through it once or twice. If the
students seem confused, have them echo your rhythm as you follow along with the cards the
first few rounds.

Specific Differentiation Strategies:

- Pass out lyrics sheets for each person to have their own.
- Allows students to sit closer to the board if they cannot see.
- Create alternative motions for students who are limited with movement.

Assessment:
- Have specific students stand up during the improve portion of Leaves are Falling down
to see if they are keeping the beat and following along with the feeling of the music.
- You can call on specific groups of people to perform rhythms. It shouldn’t be on one
person alone yet because it is still such a new topic.

Do the same exit ticket from last week for this week: As an exit ticket, have 3 pumpkins printed
and placed on the door. There will be a happy, medium, and sad pumpkin. Tell the students to
high five what pumpkin matched how they felt about reading music today. Keep a tally mark of
the faces.

You should also complete the first rubric from class week 5 to see if their recognition between
quarter note to eighth notes have improved.
