INTRODUCTION TO FACILITATING LEARNER- CENTERED TEACHING

 Learner-centered teachers may occasionally provide direct instruction, but for the most
part, their role is one of facilitator. Teachers who act as facilitators provide their
students with materials, opportunities and guidance as students take on agency for other
aspects of their own learning.

 Facilitated learning is where the students are encouraged to take more control of their
learning process. The trainer's role becomes that of a facilitator and organizer providing
resources and support to learners. ... They might also set their own objectives and be
responsible for learning assessment.

 In many small group teaching situations, the role of the teacher is that of facilitator of
learning: leading discussions, asking open-ended questions, guiding process and task,
and enabling active participation of learners and engagement with ideas. ... the
instructor, who imparts information to students.

 When teachers are learner-centered, focused on developing understanding of the

material and committed to helping students gain mastery over their learning processes,
students learn the material at a deeper level and begin managing their learning in ways
that lead to their autonomy and independence as learners”.

 Learner-centered education uses interactive strategies to engage the students and

develop their abilities. This educational approach helps students develop skills such as
decision making and problem solving, team work, and presentation skills that are
relevant to the current labor needs.

 Engaging students, teaching problem solving skills, getting students to think about
thinking, allowing students to have control, and encouraging collaboration are all
characteristics of learner-centered teaching.

 As a teacher, one of your main roles is to motivate your learners to develop their ability
and aspiration to learn. You may read about delivering training and facilitating learning,
but in reality you do much more than that. Your role is not just about teaching your
subject or preparing learners for assessment.

 There is growing evidence that courses with learner-centered approaches—those

approaches that use active learning strategies to engage students directly in learning
processes—enhance academic achievement and promote the development of important
learning skills, such as critical thinking, problem solving, and other higher order thinking
and life skills.
 The term student-centered learning refers to a wide variety of educational programs,
learning experiences, instructional approaches, and academic-support strategies that
are intended to address the distinct learning needs, interests, aspirations, or cultural
backgrounds of individual students and groups of students.

 In short, a student-centered classroom, or student-centered learning environment, is one

where the focus of instruction is shifted from the teacher to the student, with the end goal
of developing students who are autonomous and independent, by placing the
responsibility of learning in the hands of the students.
