Introduction of Foundation
A foundation is the element of an architectural
structure which connects it to the ground, and
transfers loads from the structure to the ground.
Foundations are generally considered either
shallow or deep.
Foundation engineering is the application of soil
mechanics and rock mechanics in the design of
foundation elements of structures

Types of Foundation
Shallow foundation.
1. Isolated footing
2. Combined footing
3. Strip foundations
4. Raft foundations
Deep foundation.
1. Pile foundation
2. Caisson foundation.

Shallow Foundation
Shallow foundation are those foundation which is near to the finished
ground surface generally where the depth of the foundation is less than
width and also less than 3m
1. Isolated footing:- Individual footing or Isolated footing is most
common type of foundation used for building construction This
foundation is constructed for single column and also called as pad
foundation.
2. Combined footing:-It is the combination of the isolated footing
which is constructed for the separate columns the shape of this
footing is rectangle and used when loads from structure is carried by
columns.

2. Strip footing:-
Spread footing are those whose base is more wider than a typical load
bearing wall foundations the wider base of these footing type spread the
weight from the building structure over more area and provides better
stability.
4. Raft foundation:-
Raft and mat foundation are the types of foundation which are spread
across the entire area of the building to support heavy structural loads
from columns and walls the use of mat foundatipn is for coloumns and
walls foundations where the loads from he structure on coloumns and
walls are very high.

Deep foundation
Deep foundation are those foundations which to deeply below the
finished ground surface for their base bearing capacity to be affected
by surface conditions these is usually at depth greater than 3M. below
the finished ground level.
Types of deep foundation
1.Pile foundation:-Pile foundation resist loads from structure by
skin friction and end bearing use of pile foundations also prevents
differential settlement of foundation by using the mechanical
machineries at the depth of the hard strata the piles given. It is circular
in shape.
2.Caisson foundation:- Caisson foundation is also called as
drilled shafts and has actions similar to pile foundation but are high
capacity cast in situ foundation it resist the load from structure through
shaft resistance.
